Persuasive essay to stop smoking

Authors Avatar

They blacken your lungs. They cause damage to your body. They are life threatening. And, yet, you still reach out for another cigarette. You still reach out for fatality. A small puff may seem harmless, but trust me it isn’t. We smoke at the expense of our health. We smoke at the cost of others. When will people come to their senses? When will people realise that smoking kills?

In the past year the NHS have recorded 18,000 people have died due to smoking. It is crucial that you are aware of the toxic substances that you are inhaling. Carbon monoxide, tar and nicotine are only three examples of the chemicals we find in tobacco. All of these three things can cause immense damage to the way the body functions including damage to the lungs, heart and the brain. Smoking can honestly do excessive damage to your body and prevent it from functioning healthily.

Smokers are more likely prone to getting diseases as the substances in cigarettes smoke can confuse and deteriorate cells in the body. Additionally it can affect your immune system. Lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema are few of the deadly diseases that smokers can get. These diseases can make life very difficult for you by affecting you both physically and physiologically. Were you aware that every four minutes someone will die due to smoking related diseases?

Furthermore smoking is extremely bad for your health. For example smoking can lead to severe problems such as constant tiredness, short of breath and lack of energy. Cigarettes may stain your clothes, your skin and your house though more importantly they can stain your health. It is critical that you stay away from tobacco and keep yourself healthy. Tobacco can change the way that you think and it can affect your concentration levels. As a result you may not be able to perform as well at school or at work.

This is a preview of the whole essay

It is often said that smoking is social as people find it a good way of mixing with other smokers. This isn’t true as smoking leaves an after smell on everything: your home, hair, car and your clothes. A concern that many people may have is that the smell is too strong for their likings and may give them headaches. People also agree that smokers may not always have the nicest appearance: yellow skin, teeth and fingernails. It may be social for some people though others

Some smokers say that nicotine gives them the feeling of relaxation and makes them feel calm. However, the reality is that nicotine is a stimulant and rather than making your body slow down it speeds up your actions. This can also speed up your blood pressure. It may make you feel chilled out although it is just affecting your body and the way you think. Nicotine makes you addicted and therefore unfortunately it makes you become dependant on cigarettes.

How long will it be before people start spending money wisely rather than wasting it on cigarettes and ruining their health?  Every year the average smoker in the UK spends up to an extra £1000 on cigarettes. Just imagine how much more these people could do with this kind of money rather than throwing it away. In particular younger people should be aware that there are far more important things to spend money on such as: education, housing and food.

For the last decade the government have been thinking of ways to tackle pollution; however one of the largest contributors is smoking. Cigarettes don’t only release 4000 harmful chemicals into the body however it also pollutes the air quality. Carbon monoxide, nicotine and arsenic are released into the earth’s atmosphere which creates vast damage to our health.

Cigarettes are dangerous and risky to have around the home. Have you ever heard of the phrase “where there’s smoke, there’s fire”? In the UK many fires are started due to smokers. Unfortunately numerous restaurants, bars and clubs have been burnt down due to cigarette smoke. However, after the smoking ban the number of fires has decreased. Some people would protest against banning cigarettes from the household although on one hand it would prevent a lot of accidents from occurring.

An issue that parents may have is that they are concerned that the smoke will affect their children. Chief Medical Officer Linda Barker says, “Second hand smoking is awful. Each year 18,000, children under the age of 5 go into hospital with complaints caused by smoke from cigarette smoke.” If people are not concerned about their own health why can’t they take others into account?

Other groups of people that are at risk of passive smoking are those that are elderly, have chronic diseases or asthma. Smokers are not always aware that they are smoking at the expense of others. Many people especially children have suffered from respiratory problems and ill health. Cigarette smoke contributes to bad air quality and

is extremely unhealthy.

It was easy to start smoking therefore why isn’t easy to give up? If you are really concerned about your health and other peoples then you would give up now. At one time I use to smoke excessively and found it difficult to give up. Though, I soon realised that smoking kills after it took my auntie from me. I feel lucky to be alive. When will people come to their senses? When will this all end? When will people realise that smoking kills?

Pregnant women who inhale secondhand smoke have a higher chance of giving birth to an underweight baby, and babies who inhale secondhand smoke can develop lung infections early on. Smoking doesn’t just affect other 's health, but also social interactions and personal reputation on others. Smoking does not set a good example for children, as most children that have parents/guardians who smoke, are more likely to smoke as well, since it shows them that it 's acceptable to do. But, since it’s an addiction and “you just can’t live without it” you try to minimise the damage with the help of diet and exercise. But what if you have family or friends around you? If the harmful effects on yourself are not enough to keep you away from your cigarette box, then maybe knowing the damage you’re dealing to people around you will help you think twice about continuing the habit. So, here are some things you have to remember …show more content…

See your doctor and ask for some stop- smoking treatments or switch to less dangerous smoking options, like using e-cigarettes. Not only are they healthier (because you are smoking vapour and not tobacco smoke) but they are also cheaper in the long run. Get e-cigarettes and e-liquids in Australia (http://www.x2cigs.com) where you can even find starter packs tailored to fit just what you’re looking for. #2: Your smoke is everyone’s smoke You are not the only one affected by the toxic chemicals released by your cigarette stick. People around you can’t help but inhale it too so keep in mind that second hand smoke contains a mix of about 200 chemicals such as ammonia, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide, and carbon monoxide that are poisonous and can potentially cause cancer. Second hand smoke also accounts for over 3,000 lung cancer deaths every year and is responsible for about 40,000 cardiovascular-related deaths. #3: You and your environment smell bad Your breath, clothes, skin, hair, car, and even your home reek of tobacco. You, as a smoker, may not even notice the smell, but people around you definitely recognize the obvious and unpleasant …show more content…

Through this, you can lessen the smell that you emit. Because you smoke vapour instead of tobacco, you also lose the odour that comes along with it. You can get e-liquids in Australia that will suit your taste and style without the exterior odour. #4: Your baby needs you If you’re expecting a baby, or you already have one, it’s is really better to stop quitting now. Smoking can actually have an effect on your newborn’s health. According to statistics, babies that are born from parents that smoke have essentially lower weight than those of normal babies. Not only that, tobacco smoke can also increase the chances of pregnancy miscarriage and developmental disabilities. • Also, remember that babies are more prone to sickness so even just being around them can put them at risk. Tobacco smoke tends to stick to anything it comes in contact with so before playing with, or holding a baby, make sure you have washed your mouth and have changed your shirt. #5: You are important to your

Cigarette Smoke and Vitamin A as Teratogens

Cigarette smoke can be considered a teratogen that is environmentally, behaviorally, and maternally induced. Cigarette smoke has long been known to have teratogenic effects on developing fetuses. Warning labels regarding the dangers of smoking to fetuses have appeared on cigarette packs since 1985 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Mothers can expose their babies to cigarette smoke and the chemicals which it contains directly by smoking herself or indirectly by working, living or being in an environment in which other people are smoking (second-hand smoke). There is no known exact amount of cigarette smoke considered safe or dangerous.

Hypnosis To Stop Smoking

In many respects men and women are quite similar in regards to smoking. There are still slightly more male smokers than female smokers (29% and 28% of all adults respectively) Two thirds of men and women would like to stop smoking and equal proportions try to stop smoking each year. New evidence indicates that men and women succeed in stopping smoking at the same rate. However, interesting patterns emerge when analyzing the reasons why men and women smoke, their motivations to stop, the process of stopping smoking and the barriers they face. It is important to understand these differences so that effective smoking cessation strategies can be developed. Most important are the different psychological and physical dependencies men and women with their smoking.

Argumentative Essay On Nicotine And Tobacco

Many could argue that nicotine is solely responsible for the addiction found in using tobacco and not the health damage. Still, an addiction by itself is an extremely bad habit and it is not something that one should overlooked. It is common for individuals to pick up a bad habit on accident, and once they do, it will be very difficult to let go of the habit. In the case of nicotine and tobacco, individuals are knowingly picking up an addiction that they do not know if they could stop. In other words, nicotine is like an addicted bad habit that is extremely hard to stop once it started. Furthermore, this habit can and will lead to an expensive and destructive lifestyle. Even without the addiction and tobacco, nicotine is a dangerous

Persuasive Essay Smoking

Smoking is not only had for the internal environment, it is also bad for the internal organs as well. Smoking can cause a number of diseases and reduce overall health in smokers (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). When an individual smokes, they increase their chances of getting cancer not only in the lungs, but other organs such as the bladder, mouth, stomach, liver, colon and rectum, to name a few (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). Smoking has also been known to cause leukemia. Every cigarette smoked affects breathing and causes scarring of the lungs (Be Tobacco Free). On the other hand, smoking increases a smoker’s chance of developing cardiovascular diseases due to smoking. They have a greater chance of developing hypertension (high blood pressure), strokes, heart attacks, aneurysms, etc. (American Heart Association). ...her” (Unknown). Smoking is harmful and shouldn’t even have begun with in the first place. To put a single thought about all the bad things that smoking can lead to isn’t hard. Smoking should never even cross the brain. It is crazy how many people just do it so they can “fit in.” That shouldn’t be an excuse to get lung disease, or to ruin cells in the brain. Do not put the harm of others into your hands. Just ask yourself if you can handle the guilt of knowing that someone who doesn’t smoke has “smoker’s lungs” because they have been around someone who smokes. There are so many people today that die, because they have smoked all their life, or even died from secondhand smoke because their parents or spouse have smoked in front of them. So think twice before lighting a cigarette and taking the first puff, think about what all can happen to the body, once addicted.

Maternal Smoking Essay

Introduction: Smoking itself is a significant national public health issue, with 7,000 deaths a year caused by smoking-related diseases¹. Smoking, and second-hand smoke, poses a dangerous risk to anyone exposed and this is especially true in maternal smoking during pregnancy.

Smoking in Public Spaces Should be Banned

Ever since earlier years, when cigarettes came into market, people have had the right to make the decision of whether or not they want to smoke. But for some people, this is not a choice. This creates the problem of second-hand smoke, which is more harmful than people think. Second hand smoke has been liable to increase the risk of lung cancer by three times. Cigarette smoke contains a deadly mixture of carbon monoxide, nicotine, and more than 4,000 other chemicals, many of which cause cancer and heart disease. The smoke that appears off the end of an idle burning cigarette is even more toxic than inhaled smoke because the tobacco is smouldering at a lower temperature and is therefore burning less efficiently. When you sit in a smoky room, office, restaurant or bar, you can't help breathing in some of these toxic gases, particles, and chemicals. Some of the tar stays in your lungs. Small amounts of nicotine and carbon monoxide pass into your bloodstream. After half an hour, your blood pressure and heartbeat rise measurably. This means that extra stress is being placed on your heart. ...

Persuasive Essay On Teenage Smoking

Smoking can cause problems all over the body and in just about every body system. Cigarettes contain over six-hundred ingredients and can produce over seven-thousand chemicals when burned. Many of those chemicals are poisonous and sixty-nine of them can cause cancer. The main ingredient in cigarettes that causes the addiction is nicotine. Nicotine can make its way to the brain in mere seconds and make you feel energetic but after a while you will become tired and crave more. As you begin to smoke and more your lungs begin to lose its power of being able to filter harmful chemicals. This makes smokers more vulnerable to little infections such as a cold or even the flu. Some of the most obvious signs of smoker begin with the outside of the body. Smoking will soon produce wrinkles and premature aging and will cause other to be able to see the outcome of smoking against the younger generation of people. (Health

The Effects of Secondhand Smoking

Did you know that in 2011 there were more than 6 million tobacco caused deaths worldwide (Henningfield)? Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. Because there is nicotine in cigarettes, they are highly addictive. Cigarettes are one of the worlds most devastating causes of death and disease (Henningfield). There are many negative effects from secondhand smoking, both immediately and over time. Smoking also affects the environment indoors negatively. Also, when pregnant woman or parents of young children smoke, they could harm their children. People should not smoke with others around because they are exposed to harmful chemicals and they are not the one putting themselves in danger.

Tobacco: Avoidable Deaths In The United States

Very important to the baby’s health, the mother must stop smoking. If a woman continues to smoke while she’s pregnant, the baby’s oxygen level could decrease, resulting in the baby’s heart rate to increase to a dangerous level. Secondhand smoke could also affect the baby in a few different ways. The baby could develop asthma and other allergic reactions. Babies should always be kept on a safe, clean environment to ensure a healthy childhood. Mothers can kick the addiction by avoiding cigarettes, maybe by reading a book to keep the mind off of things, or even going on a short walk. Children whose mother smoked during pregnancy are at greater risk of conditions such as: a behavioral problem, learning disorders, and could even increase their chance to become a smoker. It is very important for pregnant women to at least temporarily quit until birth is

Effects of Smoking While Pregnant

During a pregnancy there are many choices to be made and smoking should not be one of them. Smoking while pregnant can cause major effects before the birth of the child and also in the child’s future. Here are a few effects before the actual birth of the child: 1) Cigarettes contains a large number of chemicals that harm unborn babies. 2) Smoking raises the levels of carbon monoxide in your bloodstream. This gives less oxygen for baby. 3) Nicotine tightens the blood vessels, meaning the oxygen is passed over less effectively to the baby 4) Miscarriage or stillborn.

The Effects Of Smoking During Pregnancy

...just being around a person that does can cause harm to a mother’s fetus. Women need to know that smoking can cause miscarriages, premature birth, and other damage to a baby. Before women that smoke decide to make the decision of getting pregnant, they should research all the harmful effects that smoking has on a fetus. If pregnant smokers were to halt tobacco use a total of 986 infant deaths would be averted annually. This validates the need for infusion of more resources into existing smoking cessation campaigns in order to achieve higher quit rates, and substantially diminish current levels of smoking-associated infant deaths (Salihu, Aliyu, Pierre-Louis, & Alexander, 2003). The only way a woman can avoid pregnancy complications associated with smoking is to quit and she should also avoid others who smoke in order to avoid the dangers of second hand smoke.

Electronic Cigarette Is The Social Problem Of Electronic Smoking

The problem of tobacco smoking appeared long ago, but exist to present day and becomes more global day after day. Tobacco smoking is not a simple and harmless enjoyment, it is a destructive common habit. But the biggest problem is that society takes it as a normal and allows this behavior for every order of all age groups. Besides this, a number of

For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable. Some smoke to appeal to their peers or simply because it “feels good.” Smoking one cigarette can lead to a major addiction. The effects of smoking hurt oneself and those amongst us. The carbon monoxide reduces the amount of oxygen getting to the baby, nicotine reduces how well your placenta works, and smoking affects your baby’s brain and lungs. The baby could have a weak immune system, weak lungs which could very well carry on into their adulthood, the baby been overweight or obese in childhood. If you quit before the or during the first three months of your pregnancy you could reduce complications during birth, your baby having a healthy birth weight, reduce the risk of illness during their infant/childhood years and reducing the risk of a premature delivery. If you stop smoking after the first 3 months it helps your baby practice their breathing movements with ease and has a better chance of a healthy birth weight.

Say No To Smoking

There are drugs in the world that are hurting us all. The drug that I am going to talk about is the drug found in cigarettes: nicotine. Although some good people do no think that smoking cigarettes will directly affect their lives, they are wrong because smoking is nothing but a shortcut to dying.

Smoking is not a joke, although we see it on TV, in comics, and maybe right in front of our faces, it does affect our health. Did you ever take a close look at the bottom of the cigarette box? Well, if you did not, this is what it says: SMOKING MAY CAUSE LUNG CANCER, HEART DISEASE AND MAY ALSO COMPLICATE PREGNANCY. Does it not shock you that these tobacco companies are giving us a warning?

I do not know why kids think smoking is cool. Maybe they think it makes them look more like an adult or they do it because their friends are doing it, but that is not a very good reason to kill themselves, is it?

Smoking is the cause of many deaths around the world.

Smoking causes diseases such as lung cancer, lip, mouth, and tongue cancer, and heart attack. Smoking can ruin all your hopes and your dreams. Have you ever seen a commercial for cigarettes? You have to admit that the people in that commercial do look like they are having fun. Did you notice that they never show you an "after photo"? The reason is that those people are ugly now that their bodies have had too many puffs. As General George Washington said, "Every puff is like a taste of death". Even if you just take a little puff, you still can get very ill. That is why you should never start to...

Reviews of: "This is a persuasive essay about saying no to smoking" :

Just say no.

With all of the well known health hazards of smoking, it's unfortunate anyone needs to be persuaded not to smoke. Sadly, it's not simply a rational choice as people are addicted. How do you persuade someone whose body is crying out for a cigarette that it's something they really shouldn't do? It would be nice if reading a page full of all of the disadvantages of smoking would do the trick. The best course of action is trying to make sure young people don't get hooked in the first place. Parents and schools need to take this problem seriously as proper education of the young is vital as they are a prime target group. The health-related consequences to our economy are staggering and the toll in human lives is tragic.

On Why One Should Stop Smoking Essay (Speech)

Introduction.

Credibility material: how do you really feel when some of the problems you or your relative or even friends face due to smoking? And is it possible to stop smoking after you have been told that smoking will definitely give you serious health problems? Well, I had a friend who became a chain smoker. He used to wake and the first thing that went into his mouth was a cigarette stick, then any other thing will follow thereafter. My friend had been experiencing persistent coughs that made him suspect he might have contracted HIV virus yet he had not yet spent with a woman. But he went for HIV test which proved negative. He continued smoking as he sought out the cough issue in his own ways. One day he became very ill and the cough became even worse. As a friend I accompanied him to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with cancer. The doctor’s advice was that he should stop smoking; however, he never adhered to the doctor’s advice and later died of serious cancer. That was a sad event caused by what could be avoided.

  • Link to the audience: one of the people who have suffered health complications or death as a result of smoking may be somebody close to you or someone you know.
  • Thesis and preview: today I am privileged to have your audience and I intend to talk to you about the effects of smoking, and also I propose to give a talk on how to solve the problem of smoking.

Shift into the main section of the speech: I will begin by telling you how smoking affects us.

So many people around the world have suffered the effects of smoking. I will talk about these effects in terms of health and financial effects.

  • Research has found out that non-smokers are also exposed to dangers related to smoking. It can lead to increased effects of asthma on those who already have asthma, especially children. Taking for instance, available statistics indicate that in the United States of America alone, 53,000 non-smokers are killed by issues related to smoking (San Francisco Tobacco Free Project para1).
  • To those who have coronary diseases, second hand smoking increases the risk of the disease and can make it severe. Moreover, those who have high risk factors of the disease can easily be attacked when exposed to smoking environment for long.
  • Imagine that being exposed to second hand smoke for only thirty minutes is enough to cause damages to your heart and the damages are just similar to those of an actual or habitual smoker.
  • Smoking also affects the unborn: the fetus is affected by secondary smoke inhaled by the mother.
  • In women who are young and have not reached menopause, secondary smoke increases the risk of breast cancer.
  • Other effects are impaired learning ability of children, increased risk of experiencing spinal pain, and reduced median cotinine levels (Bonnie pp.5-21).Transition: I believe that you can now realize that smoking does not only affect the smoker, but even the non-smokers and the unborn. The problems related to smoking affects all of us, but the smokers are more exposed than non-smokers even though in some of the problems both groups suffer are just the same. Now I will tell you about the risks smokers directly face.

Habitual smokers are exposed to:

  • Habitual smokers are at a very high risk of cancer. It has been known that smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer. Taking the case of United Kingdom alone, approximately 106, 000 individuals die annually due to smoke related cancer.
  • Some of the diseases caused and or worsened by smoking include, lung cancer, diseases of the heart, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and also circulation problems.
  • To pregnant women, smoking is highly likely to cause miscarriages, complications, poor development of the child which may continue after birth and it may also result into still birth or death of the child in the first one week of birth (Litt 29).
  • Smoking also has economic and other effects on smokers. Smokers, especially heavy chain smokers, use a lot of money as cigarette expenditures. Some of other effects of smoking include, bad breath, clothes and home environment smell stale tobacco, reduces sense of taste, life insurance of smokers are damn expensive and potential employers may not like smokers due to the possibility of constant seek leave.Transition: you can see how much risk smokers are exposed to. It is important to note that these risks can potentially result into deaths. However, it is possible to avoid all these smoking related problems. Now, my last discussion will be on how to solve the problem of smoking.

The only effective way in solving the problem is to stop smoking. But the question somebody may be asking is, “How do I stop smoking?” I will give some ways on how to do so:

  • Will power is one of the ways to use in solving the problems but the most difficult of all other ways. One should have the courage and have undying persistence on quitting smoking.
  • Use nicotine-based chewing gum; even though they still contain nicotine, however, the victim under treatment is not getting the tar into the body system.
  • Use anti-depressants under a medical doctor’s guide.
  • It is important to stop smoking once diagnosed with problems related with smoking
  • Another way to stop smoking is to seek the intervention of a counselor who will guide you on gradual processes of stopping smoking.
  • Non-smokers, especially with risky diseases, should avoid smoking environments (Acts 50).

Brakelight/intention to stop: as you can realize, stopping smoking and campaigning against it will be beneficial to all of us.

Summary: I have talked to you about the effects of smoking on both habitual smokers and non-smokers and also on how the problems can be stopped or avoided. All of us must rise up and campaign against smokers or else we will gradually be affected and infected.

Link back to the audience: now that you know the effects of smoking and how to solve it will you help somebody stop smoking? How happy will you be or satisfied will you feel if someone is to come to thank you for helping him or her stop smoking? Let us take the challenge.

Concluding remark: I am going to stop here, but not before I give you a quote by somebody known as Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland. “A cigarette is the only consumer product which when used as directed kills its consumer.”
