According to a report from Statistics & Data, English is the most spoken language in the world .

And if you include people who use it as a second language, an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide speak English. Further, a total of 96 countries in the world use English .

Considering that there are over 190 countries , that means over half of the countries you will visit likely use English as their lingua franca —the main language that people from various groups use to communicate with each other.

Throughout the centuries, the British Empire expanded and ruled over many different countries. The empire (a group of countries ruled by a single government) forced the people they ruled over to speak English.

Because the empire lasted over 300 years, many of the countries under the former British Empire (like Ireland, which had Gaelic as its original language ) speak English to this day.

When you are studying English, you will come across the different types used around the world . When you know the history of English as it is used in a certain country, the similarities and differences between, say, Australian and New Zealand English make much more sense.

Many companies need employees who can communicate with partners and clients all over the world. Very often, that means finding employees who speak English.

Are you job hunting ? Do you just want to keep your professional options open? Learning English can be an important step to achieving those goals.

The global job market has even created new positions for bilingual people (people fluent in two languages). By learning English, you could become a translator, a language teacher or an English marketing professional for a global company.

Like in real life, English is the most-used language online, with 55 percent (or over half) of all websites using the language. That means if you can understand and read English, you can access and enjoy a lot of written resources online.

For example, you can read online news articles . You can participate in a discussion on a forum like Reddit . You can send an email to someone from halfway across the globe. The possibilities are endless!

Also, many people and businesses conduct (do) research, market themselves or communicate and develop connections on sites like LinkedIn —making internet English crucial to professional success as well.

If you learn English well enough to  pass tests like the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), you can study in English-language universities across the globe.

The TOEFL is one of the most common English proficiency tests. Others include the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the Cambridge exams . Some colleges or language centers even offer classes to help you practice for these tests.

Even if you are not taking a test for a specific reason, studying for an English exam can still help you improve your language skills.

Just knowing English travel phrases is great if you just want to do things like get around a hotel or ask for directions. But if you want to stay in that country for at least a few years or so, you need to expand your vocabulary.

For example, if you live in an apartment (a room or unit in a building where you pay rent to a landlord), you need to know some house vocabulary in case you have trouble with your bathroom and need to ask someone for help.

And if you regularly interact (come into contact with) native English speakers, you need to know what the daily phrases they use mean.

Because English is the most widely used language online and offline, you are likely to meet English speakers when you are traveling or using chat apps like WhatsApp .

When you know their language, it is easier to share common interests like your favorite food , music and much more.

And hey, you may even want to surprise your new buddy (friend) with some of the weirdest English words you know—or at least ask them about the best way to use those words.

Understanding English means you can enjoy modern Hollywood blockbusters (very popular/successful movies) as well as classic films from different generations —and talk about them with other film-loving, English-speaking friends .

Not sure where to watch movies in English? Check out streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video as well as free services like Crackle and Tubi TV .

If you do not have time for a movie marathon (an event where you watch two or more movies consecutively), websites like YouTube and Vimeo can also give you engaging English videos that discuss all kinds of topics.

FluentU takes authentic videos—like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks—and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.

Want to put more books on your bookshelf? When you know English, you can read popular books written in English like “Harry Potter,”   “Twilight,”   “The Hunger Games” and more.

If you want to read books in English for free, here are some options:

  • Check out a local library. Even if you don’t live in an English-speaking region, your library likely has an English- or foreign-language section.
  • Use e-book services like Kindle or Nook . These usually have many free downloads. Browse their huge selections to see if any free English books interest you.
  • Visit sites that have books in the public domain. When you say that a book is in the public domain , it means the book’s copyright has expired. In other words, you can legally download the book for free. One good site for books like these is Project Gutenberg —if you are taking an English literature class, this resource will come in handy!

Research shows that learning a new language changes your brain structure (in a good way). It impacts the parts of your brain  responsible for memory, conscious thought and more.

Put simply, learning a new language can make your brain stronger and more versatile (flexible or able to do more things).

Research also shows that bilingualism can keep the brain strong and healthy into old age and help with memory, concentration and other skills.

How to Write Stanford’s “Excited About Learning” Essay

This article was written based on the information and opinions presented by Johnathan Patin-Sauls and Vinay Bhaskara in a CollegeVine livestream. You can watch the full livestream for more info.

What’s Covered:

Choosing an idea vs. an experience, learning for the sake of learning, learning as a means to other ends, be specific.

Stanford University’s first essay prompt asks you to respond to the following:

“ The Stanford community is deeply curious and driven to learn in and out of the classroom. Reflect on an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning. (100-250 words)”

For this short answer question, your response is limited to a maximum of 250 words. In this article, we will discuss considerations for choosing to write about an idea or experience, ways to demonstrate a love or enthusiasm for learning, and why you should be as specific. For more information and guidance on writing the application essays for Stanford University, check out our post on how to write the Stanford University essays .

Regardless of if you choose either an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning as a topic, there are a few considerations for each.

Most people gravitate towards writing about an idea. One challenge that arises with an idea-focused essay is that applicants who are passionate about an idea often become hyper focused on explaining the idea but neglect to connect this idea to who they are as a person and why this idea excites them.

When writing about an experience, it is important to strike a balance between describing the experience and analyzing the impact of the experience on you, your goals, and your commitment to learning.

This essay question allows you to expand on your joy for learning and your genuine curiosity. Stanford is searching for students who are naturally curious and enjoy the process of learning and educating themselves. For example, a compelling essay could begin with a riveting story of getting lost while hiking the Appalachian Trail and describing how this experience led to a lifelong passion for studying primitive forms of navigation.

There is a strong tendency among applicants to write about formal academic coursework, however, the most compelling essays will subvert expectations by taking the concept of learning beyond the classroom and demonstrating how learning manifests itself in unique contexts in your life.

If you’re someone for whom learning is a means to other ends, it is important that you convey a sense of genuine enthusiasm and purpose beyond, “I want to go to X school because it will help me get Y job for Z purpose.” You may be motivated to attend college to obtain a certain position and make a comfortable income, however these answers are not necessarily what admissions officers are looking for. Instead, it can be helpful to relate an idea or experience to something more personal to you.

Academic & Professional Trajectory

Consider relating the idea or experience you choose to a major, degree program, research initiative, or professor that interests you at Stanford. Then go beyond the academic context to explain how the idea or experience ties into your future career.

For instance, if you are interested in the concept of universal health care, then you might describe your interest in applying to public health programs with faculty that specialize in national health care systems. You might then describe your long term career aspirations to work in the United States Senate on crafting and passing health care policy.

Personal Values & Experiences

Another way to tie the ideas in this essay back to a more personal topic is to discuss how the idea or experience informs who you are, how you treat others, or how you experience the world around you.

You could also focus on an idea or experience that has challenged, frustrated, or even offended you, thereby reinforcing and further justifying the values you hold and your worldview.

Community Building & Social Connectedness

You may also explore how this idea or experience connects you to a particular community by helping you understand, build, and support members of the community. Stanford is looking to find students who will be engaged members of the student body and carry out the community’s core mission, values, and projects, so this essay can be an opportunity to highlight how you would contribute to Stanford.

Be specific in your choice of idea or the way in which you describe an experience. For example, a response that focuses on the joys of learning philosophy is too broad to be particularly memorable or impactful. However, the mind-body problem looking at the debate concerning the relationship between thought and consciousness is a specific philosophical idea that lends itself to a rich discussion.

Abstract Learning English is undoubtedly an advantage and added value for many reasons, but very few possess the time and the ability to go in a formal way to the educational centers of learning English language is necessary for many causes, including: progress or advancement in working, English is the dominant language in the world and is the official language of the majority of countries, the need for language also during travel abroad where in each country will speak English, openness to other cultures of… etc. I intended to conduct this research to examine the use and significance of using movies to the acquisition and the development of the language skills for students, especially listening, writing, reading and speaking skills. I tried to prove that this method has a good effect for students. Also, I tried to prove that the Language teachers have been using movies in their classes for a long time a go, and there are a number of causes why film is an excellent teaching and learning tool. Explained in this research the pros and cons of this method of education. I visited The University of Dammam and made a referendum in one of the classrooms of students, also conducted an interview with 10 students. Through the interview and referendum l found that this way has a good effect and has a lot of supporters. Therefore, several students noticed the improvement of listening, speaking and acquired more phrases and words in a fun and easy way.

Introduction English is the common language among all countries in the world, any state visit in the world you’ll find their fluent so we must learn it. There are many ways to acquire the language and improve on the language skills for students. The easiest and most popular ways are through watching movies, because this way is a great idea, successful and good beginning, and alternative way for people don’t have the time and the ability to go to the educational centers and for those who don’t want to learn the language by traditional way the academic. We all love watching movies, then why wasn’t way to learn English? That education is not exclusively for watching movies, but if a student enjoys learning the language through films this is the education through entertainment, which means that it invested with something useful and positive. It is a great method to use movies as an English learning tool for students to improve language skills, especially speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills. Also, it’s a great way to learn English slang, grammar rules and acquire a lot of phrases, vocabularies, expressions, and learn how we use it. For this reason, many teachers of English language now use movies in the classroom. If you want to begin using movies as an English learning tool in your home and you’re a beginner in English, here are some important tips. First get some children movies or choose the movies you saw it already. Saw this film with subtitles and write new words and phrases for you on notebook to find their meanings later. If your advanced level, writes words you don’t understand it and then run the translation of the scene which was not understood, by the next time you will notice that you no need to turn on the translation. “Using films in the classroom were new and very pleasant experience for the students. They claim that they enjoyed the assigned activities in the classroom. Students were more motivated to see and hear real life situation than to follow the activities in the graded book. Their impress Students claim that using movie is a good way to improve English vocabulary and gives them more chances to practice English”. (PhD. Xhemaili, Mirvan??N.13, 2013) Literature Review In that respect there are many established writers and teachers of the English language talks about using film as an English learning tool. Here are quotes of some of their words.PhD. Xhemaili, Mirvan High Lector, Language Center, South East European University, Tetovo, Macedonia says “The general impression of the teachers is that films have a positive effect on students ‘ language learning process. They believe that using films combined with the readers helped students to become active participants in the classroom activities”. He also stated: “Teachers claim that films can enhance the communicative competence; they improve learners ‘ interaction in class and provide students with more opportunities to use English”. Kara Griffin is an instructor at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute in Spokane, Washington, thinks that through film students learn slang traded between people. “The language of movies reflects the language of real-life America. This is the language that students will hear on the streets, in the shops, in all facets of real life”. David M. Stewart thinks that students can reach University with many problems in a language such as misunderstanding, limited vocabulary and other problems. And the film could help them overcome those problems. “Students arrive in university with many English language problems: poor comprehension, limited vocabulary, slow reading, bad grammar, nonexistent conversational skills, to name the most obvious. Films can help on all counts.” The benefits of using the film in teaching English language: Using the film in teaching language is an excellent educational activity and a great learning tool. You will get and learn the language in a live interactive, realistic, and learn English in the same way children learn of their mother tongue, when you see a movie you are merging your mind with the characters that you see in reality you are monitoring, this method is the parent to learn any new language. You learn words in context, in dialogue and debate in analog, so you will learn how to use the words before saves their meaning. Another benefits are, you can from through watching movies Know and understand the culture of the other: one of the basics that make us able to understand any language is to know and understand the culture of the language, and that employers help their knowledge and understanding of language. Also, learn about the different dialects and different pronunciations of the vocabulary. Other benefits are you can learn the meanings of vocabulary without using a dictionary. The most important point is increasing your inventory of vocabulary, strengthen and save words in your mind. Another benefit of using movies is learning phrases and proverbs in spoken language. Also improve the ability of listening and the level of reading and the writing. Movies are providing students with examples of English used in ‘real’ situations outside the classroom. It’s very helpful, especially when you are watching movies without translation because it’s making your accent better. You develop your understanding of spoken English. It’s really fun way, you will not feel bored because the story and the plot grab you to complete the film, you learn and at the same time enjoy this artwork, so will spend more hours to learn and see. Some language learners through the films they see its defects such as: First defects are the film presents informal talking, so sometimes these series and movies show a lot of swear words or other good or acceptable in our society and our culture. Second defects are they’re not they follow many of the rules means the language closer to the slang and for this reason will be initially wrong. The conversation is at a faster stride, and then it becomes tough for a non native speaker to understand the accent. Also, he will have to pause and play back a scene many times to understand what exactly was said. Significance of Research This research tries to prove that Watching English movies are one of the methods of literacy in English and alternative way to not have the time and the ability to go to the educational centers. This method has a good effect on students in the acquisition and the development of language skills such as listening, writing, pronunciation, speed reading, spoken language understanding, understanding the rules and structures, and learns new words and phrases with a fun and easy way. Research Question This research aims to find out if the watching movies can help students to the acquisition and the development of the language skills such as listening, pronunciation, speed reading, speech understanding, understanding the grammar rules, structures, and learn new words and phrases in considerable significance. Research Methodology I will do a referendum for students of English departments in the Dammam University from supporters and opponents of this way of learning, after the referendum we will distribute CDs of educational films and entertainment as a gift to them. After that I will start a structured interview with 15 students one by one who used this method of the acquisition and the development of the language skills to estimate the benefit they have got in terms of vocabulary, speaking and listening, and what problems they faced in using this learn method. Ethical Considerations The Referendum and interview were conducted with students English departments in the University of Dammam for girls, so I will keep their names secret on the desire. Limitations of Research My research was in Dammam city. It was a referendum for students of the English department in the Dammam University from supporters and opponents of this method of learning. Also, I met 10 of the students who study English and benefited from this method to learn and improve many of language skills. If my research included male students, or other universities I think it would be more positive and better results. Expected Result I expect after applying this method of learning, there will be a significant improvement in the level of students and also help them develop the language skills, the acquisition of new vocabulary and new phrases in short period. Also improve the reading, structures, and the grammar rules. This is the conclusion of the referendum result and there were many supporters of this way of learning, and this shows that students have taken advantage of this way of learning a language. The benefits of learning English are, therefore, numerous. Not only can studying English open up new opportunities for employment, academia, and travel, but it can change your life on a personal level, too.

group of people discussing the benefits of learning English and why it is important to learn English

11 Benefits of learning English

1. speaking english brings better employment opportunities.

Being the most widely-spoken language in the world, English has also become the international language of business.

Knowing English and being able to communicate professionally will undoubtedly give you access to new career opportunities and make you stand out among other applicants. A survey by  Cambridge English found that over 95% of employers in many non-native English-speaking countries consider English an important skill.

As companies do more business internationally, the ability to communicate in English will only become more important to those who want to progress at work; the same survey found that in 18% of companies, employees move to higher job grades faster if they have good English skills.

This is backed up by a 2019 study which found that advanced-level English commands a wage premium of 12% on average. Intermediate-level English brings about half this amount. Interestingly, the premiums for advanced-level French and Spanish were almost double and triple, respectively.

So, whether you wish to work for a multinational company in another country, or you just want to build a solid career, learning English will help you achieve your goals. The good news is that there are some excellent online business English courses available these days, many of them free to access.

2. Learning the English language opens up the world

English is the language not only of international business, but also of travel and tourism. If you wish to travel to other countries where you don’t speak the native language, chances are that understanding English will help you navigate public transport systems, converse with locals, and learn more about the culture.

Even if English is not the official language in the country you are traveling to, it is still by far the most common second language spoken globally. In fact, over 1 billion people around the world have chosen to learn English as a second language, so one of the benefits of speaking and understanding English is that you will share a language with around 20% of the world’s population!

If you want to move to live or study in a country where English is the main language spoken, it’s even more important that you can communicate well with native English speakers and interact with the world around you. Fortunately, once you move there, learning the language will become easier as you have the benefit of English immersion .

3. English is important for accessing information

Around 95% of all articles published in scientific journals are written in English, even if it is not the author’s first language.

If you want to be able to access global knowledge and do your own research on any topics of interest, this information is much easier to access if you have a certain level of proficiency in English.

English is also the dominant language of the internet, with almost 59% of websites published in English. This is over ten times more than the next-highest share, which goes to Russian with 5.3%.

Languages most frequently used for web content as of January 2023, by share of websites

4. Academic advantages of learning English

Given that the main language of instruction in many renowned universities and academic programs is English, you may find that you need to achieve a certain level of English proficiency before you can proceed with your studies.

This is especially true if you wish to pursue higher degrees, participate in research collaborations, and engage in academic discourse within your field of interest.

You may also decide to study in a country where English is spoken as the primary language, and you will certainly need a good command of the language in order to succeed with this.

In this way, studying English can open doors to other fields of study, too.

5. Learning another language boosts cognitive ability

One of the many benefits to learning a new language is that it encourages your brain to work in different ways.

This study looked at adults learning a second language and noted that after an initial learning period, and with sustained practice of at least five hours per week, the subjects benefitted from longer attention spans and a better ability to maintain attention when switching between tasks.

There is growing evidence that people who can speak more than one language are more creative and empathetic toward others. It’s also believed that language learning can counteract some of the negative cognitive decline brought on by aging. Specifically, it can improve memory recall and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease .

6. Cultural benefits of learning English

Learning to speak English can also help make you more culturally aware and broaden your horizons in life.

Firstly, as you study the language you are also learning about the culture of English-speaking countries: national holidays, family traditions, history, food, music, and more.

Secondly, learning English will give you chances to meet people from other countries who are also learning the language. As you practice speaking together, you will discover fascinating things about how they do life differently to you.

Finally, as we mentioned earlier, English language skills can help when it comes to traveling and exploring new cultures first-hand.

7. Enjoy more entertainment

Another benefit of learning English is that you can more easily access and enjoy movies, books, TV shows, music, and podcasts. Again, English dominates international pop culture and being able to watch, read, or listen in the original language is much more enjoyable than reading subtitles or listening to a dubbed version.

Once you have a reasonable knowledge of English, you can also start using these forms of entertainment to continue learning, building your English fluency and comprehension .

For example, there are many ways you can use podcasts for learning English or learn new vocabulary from movies.

8. It’s a gift to your children

If you already have children or plan to start a family in the future, it’s an amazing gift to teach them English from birth or from a very young age.

Growing up bilingual, kids will experience the many benefits of knowing English without having to study it as a second language later in life. It’s a great way to give them a headstart in the globalized world they are living in.

Bilingual children also tend to have better attention spans, be better at multitasking, and be more emotionally perceptive than monolingual children, according to an article published by MindShift .

Speaking English at home can be a lot of fun, especially if you incorporate some  English-learning games into your family time.

9. Learning English can help you communicate better in your native language

As you learn a foreign language, you become more aware of how your primary language works.

If you want to learn English grammar , for example, you must first understand the grammar of your native language so you can recognize exactly what you are trying to say. It’s this kind of thing that you may never really consider if you only speak one language your whole life.

Second language fluency can also give you a better appreciation of the range and limitations of your native vocabulary. There are many words that exist in other languages that do not have an equivalent in English, and vice versa. This is why languages end up ‘borrowing’ words from one another so speakers can express themselves more eloquently.

10. You’ll form new relationships when you can speak English

English is the language of communication not just in business, but also when it comes to forming international friendships and relationships.

Whether you want to participate in global networking opportunities, write to a pen pal abroad, or even check out the international dating scene, you’ll find more opportunities opening up as you start learning the English language.

One great way to learn English and start meeting new people is with a language exchange program . You pair up with an English speaker who is interested in learning your native language, and you help each other by chatting in both languages.

11. English skills will give you greater confidence

Our final benefit of learning English (or anything else, for that matter) is that it will build your overall confidence in yourself.

As you use English more and realize your comprehension and communication are improving each day, you will gain confidence in your own ability to take on new challenges and meet the goals you set for yourself.

In this way, learning English will help motivate you to try other new things and continually develop yourself. If you’re lacking motivation right now, these quotes about learning English may help inspire you!

Start learning English easily

We hope that reading this list of benefits of learning the English language has inspired you to continue with your studies. Now you realize the many advantages that learning English brings, what are you waiting for?

The Experience of Learning English Essay

I can relate to the essay written by Rolando Niella. Learning English and using English on a daily basis can be a challenge. The English taught in my school is much different than the English used day to day in the English speaking world. I think sometimes that I will never learn enough about spoken English to completely relax during conversations with my fellow students. Like Rolando, in his essay ‘Barriers’, “I’m still in the learning process” (Niella, p. 1).

When I speak I am aware of others concerted effort to understand my version of English. It is kind of funny to see the expression on their faces as they try to understand me. And, like Rolando, I am tempted to stop trying to speak English because I get discouraged in the process. Like Rolando, I search out another who speaks my language so that I can relax and talk comfortably (Niella, p. 2).

I believe that learning English is very important to my becoming a professional. I need to be able to communicate effectively at a professional level. I need to turn my basic English skills into professional level skills to be successful. This will require much work on my part. Unfortunately, not many English speakers speak Japanese.

Getting lost in every day conversation can be a big problem. English contains many figures of speech, different accents, and regional dialects. Understanding someone from Massachusetts does not mean that I will understand someone from Texas or Louisiana. And, understanding English speakers from England and Australia can be an even harder task. The hardest English to understand is another foreign language student’s English. If limited knowledge of English is all you have in common with another foreign student that communication can be very stressful.

Although, in Japan, I had courses in conversational English I am frustrated by how many different ways English can be spoken and wish someone would speak the conversational English that I learned in Japan.

There are many figures of speech that I have learned gradually. I have to be careful though because native English speakers assume a higher level of competency in English when I use a figure of speech. Some examples I have encountered:

  • Take a seat or have a seat – they have given me the chair?
  • Turn off the light – the light is a switch not a knob.
  • That’s crazy man – what??
  • Give me a break – where do you want me to break you?
  • Are you for real? – last time I checked I was.

I have found many ways to better my English. Learning English by total emersion has forced me to learn English more quickly. I would love to have another Japanese speaker around all the time but that is not practical. Listening to the radio and watching television have helped much. Radio and television shows have given me something to talk about with my English speaking friends. Watching television has given me the opportunity to see conversational English in action. Reading books and magazines has helped as well. DVD or VCR taped movies has also helped. If I don’t understand a part I can go back and listen again as many times as I need to.

Rolando had trouble understanding English spoken by his roommates because they spoke so fast and he did not understand his roommates non-verbal communication. Rolando said that “by the time I had understood what he had said, he was gone” (Niella, p. 3). This is a big problem for students that are not native English speakers. I’m sure it’s also a problem for those frustrated English speakers who can’t communicate what they want to the foreign language students. This can be a big problem when foreign students and native English speakers are assigned to work on a group project together. It is assumed that any student who passes the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) has the English language skills to function in an English language university. Mostly this is true. They do have the skills. But, what the TOEFL doesn’t measure is the quick conversational language, and many dialects, spoken by English speaking students. Authentic language is represented on the TOEFL but foreign language students often need more practice on the conversational English they would use in English speaking universities.

I had a friend who told me that when I started to dream in English that my fluency was improving. Fluency is vital to the success of a foreign language student. Studying and sitting for the TOEFL can not measure the fluency required by a foreign student. It is only when the student is exposed to English 24 hours a day seven days a week that their English will become operational. Most foreign language students arrive at university with pre-operational language skills. It does not take long for their language skills to become operational. And, if they are dreaming in English it is a good sign. When I started to dream more and more in English I noticed that my fluency had improved. I still dream in Japanese but English is present as well.

Sometimes when speaking English I lose my train of thought. This is a problem for me. This is also a problem for Rolando who loses his train of thought in conversation. In his essay he said “I worry so much about the ‘how to’ that conversation is not always as relaxing as it should be” (Niella, p4). The only way past this problem is to push yourself and practice, practice with native speakers. For the most part the native speakers at university are very willing to help foreign students with their English. The only time they seem not willing is when they are working towards a deadline and don’t have time to slow down the English for foreign students.

When working on group projects I review and review the instructions before the group meets to get a head start on language that will be used during group planning and work sessions. The Japanese/English dictionary is nearby and I look up any words or phrases that are unfamiliar. I would recommend this approach to any foreign language students.

What can happen when foreign language students are assigned to work on group projects is that the native speakers will take over the project and let the foreign student ‘ride’ along with no requirements. I don’t do this. Working on group projects is practice for when I am employed and will work on projects with English speakers.

Foreign language students are faced with an incredible challenge when they sit for the TOEFL, pass, and are admitted to universities where English is spoken. The students may feel lost and frustrated when they first begin their studies. If the students are persistent they will learn the language skills needed to succeed at university and future employment. These students need to use all tools available to them to succeed. These tools may be the radio, television, movies (DVD or VHS), books, and magazines. Most importantly, they need to take advantage of opportunities to speak English.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – English Language and its Importance in India

As we know all of us to need a medium to express our feelings and whatever we think or want to say. Most of us talk in our mother tongue at home but at the same time, we also speak some other language at our workplace. And the most spoken language apart from our mother tongue is English. Do you know why this language got so famous and what historical importance it carries? Let’s have some details.

History of English in India

As we know India follows British English, and it started just when the Britishers came to India. It was 1830 when East India Company ruled India and as a result, they also forced us to learn their language.

It was 1835 when an Act was passed by Thomas Babington Macaulay, in which English education got compulsory for Indians. In this way, English got compulsory for us and it continued. Those who use to learn English were called mannered and sophisticated so, people started learning it.

Effect of English Language on Our Society

Although Britishers left us, we got habitual of their language; after all, they ruled us near about 200 years. After some time, English became the only language that people understood all over the country because most of the south Indian states disagreed to accept Hindi as their official language. As Britishers had all their Acts and rules in English, so we decided to translate it in our local language. But English was everywhere like our Education, Politics, etc.

Although we are free today, we are not free in terms of language. Apart from the language itself, we have also adopted English culture. Change is good when it is beneficial for us. It is good in terms of the abolition of some hypocritic thoughts and culture. English made things easy and it is the beauty of a language that we can talk to anyone and visit anywhere in the world without any difficulty.

English was a result of Britishers but when they left us it was totally our choice. Today the scenario is English is everywhere, either it is a signboard or a name of a station, it is always bilingual. Not only Indians but also tourists from other countries feel convenient when they get information in English also. There are multiple benefits to this language, so keep learning and keep growing.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – How Important is English Language in India

India is a country where all Indians are equal and they are never discriminated in terms of their religion, language, or culture. So, while talking about their language it is quite difficult to select one language as our national language. As we know there are more than 100 languages spoken in India. And if we will elect one as a national language, people of other states will definitely oppose it. Then what about English?

English and its Origin in India

India was a country where people use to speak different languages at different places like Hindi is spoken in the north whereas Tamil, Telugu, Malayan, etc. in the south. Unity in diversity is the beauty of our country, and apart from these many languages, we choose 22 languages as our official languages. But Hindi and English are adopted widely across the nation.

Now talking about the origin of English in India was the Britishers. As we know English is of two types one is American English and the other is British English. We follow British English just because the Britishers ruled us and gave us this language.

It was Lord Macaulay, who wanted to make a well-mannered society in India. So, in the year 1835, he passed an Act introducing the English language in our education system. English was also made as the official language of India. All the official work under crown and court were performed in English. This was the origin of English in India and although Britishers left us, they are still with us in terms of language.

Importance of English in India

As discussed, there are more than 100 languages spoken in India and it was very difficult to select one official language after independence. Although Hindi is spoken across the country, people from the southern part of the nation strongly opposed Hindi as a national language. As a result, English was left as it is and the other 22 languages were elected. Today there is no official language of India but English has some significance.

  • English is a language which people easily understand all over the country, so we can say that this language unites us.
  • English is also spoken all over the world and this connects us with the world.
  • Our education system is based on English so, it is very necessary to learn English in India.
  • Nowadays various companies conduct interviews in English, so one should definitely know it for good placement.
  • One should definitely learn their native language but English holds equal importance, especially in India.
  • Public places, hotels, restaurants, movie theatres, etc. all provide information, food menu in English, so one can really feel embarrassed if they do not know this language.
  • English is not only a language but also a culture and it has helped us to boycott some social and traditional taboos like dressing, eating, etc.
  • It is quite simple to earn knowledge in English as compared to other languages, just because all the educational kinds of stuff are available in English; the internet is filled with English. So, it is necessary for one to learn this language first.

India is a developing nation and a language can completely change your life, just because it opens more options for you. Suppose you know your native language, you can only work nearby and when you know English, it automatically brings lots of options for you. So, it is better to learn it. Some of us don’t want to adopt a foreign language and want to boycott this language but my opinion is, the world is changing and those who do not accept change are always left behind. It is good to promote your native language but at the same time, one should also understand the market strategies. Learn English as a language and it will definitely help you.

Importance of Education

Education makes people independent. Furthermore, it increases knowledge, strengthens the mind, and forms character. Moreover, education enables people to put their potentials to optimum use.

Education is also a type of reform for the human mind. Without education, the training of the human mind would always remain incomplete.

Education makes a person an efficient decision-maker and a right thinker. Moreover, this is possible only with the help of education. This is because education acquaints an individual with knowledge of the world around him and beyond, besides teaching the individual to be a better judge of the present.

A person that receives education shall have more avenues for the life of his choice. Moreover, an educated person will be able to make decisions in the best possible manner. This is why there is such a high demand for educated people over uneducated people for the purpose of employment .

Negative Impact of Lack of Education

Without education, a person would feel trapped. One can understand this by the example of a man who is confined to a closed room, completely shut from the outside world, with no way to exit it. Most noteworthy, an uneducated person can be compared to this confined man.

Education enables a person to access the open world. Furthermore, a person without education is unable to read and write. Consequently, a person without education would remain closed to all the knowledge and wisdom an educated person can gain from books and other mediums.

The literacy rate of India stands at around 60% in comparison to more than 80% literacy rate of the rest of the world. Moreover, the female literacy rate is 54.16% in accordance with the 2001 population census. These figures certainly highlight the massive problem of lack of education in India.

To promote education, the government of India takes it as a national policy. The intention of the government is to target the very cause of illiteracy. As such, the government endeavours to eradicate illiteracy, which in turn would lead to the eradication of poverty .

The government is running various literacy programmes like the free-education programme, weekend and part-time study programme, continuing education programme, mid-day meal programme, adult literacy programme, etc. With the consistent success rate of these programmes, hopefully, things will better.

When Your Technical Skills Are Eclipsed, Your Humanity Will Matter More Than Ever

A graphic depicting a door being opened to reveals a handshake, a cup of a coffee, a briefcase and a swirl of colors.

By Aneesh Raman and Maria Flynn

Mr. Raman is a work force expert at LinkedIn. Ms. Flynn is the president of Jobs for the Future.

There have been just a handful of moments over the centuries when we have experienced a huge shift in the skills our economy values most. We are entering one such moment now. Technical and data skills that have been highly sought after for decades appear to be among the most exposed to advances in artificial intelligence. But other skills, particularly the people skills that we have long undervalued as soft, will very likely remain the most durable. That is a hopeful sign that A.I. could usher in a world of work that is anchored more, not less, around human ability.

A moment like this compels us to think differently about how we are training our workers, especially the heavy premium we have placed on skills like coding and data analysis that continue to reshape the fields of higher education and worker training. The early signals of what A.I. can do should compel us to think differently about ourselves as a species. Our abilities to effectively communicate, develop empathy and think critically have allowed humans to collaborate, innovate and adapt for millenniums. Those skills are ones we all possess and can improve, yet they have never been properly valued in our economy or prioritized in our education and training. That needs to change.

In today’s knowledge economy, many students are focused on gaining technical skills because those skills are seen as the most competitive when it comes to getting a good job. And for good reason. For decades, we have viewed those jobs as future-proof, given the growth of technology companies and the fact that engineering majors land the highest-paying jobs .

The number of students seeking four-year degrees in computer science and information technology shot up 41 percent between the spring of 2018 and the spring of 2023, while the number of humanities majors plummeted. Workers who didn’t go to college and those who needed additional skills and wanted to take advantage of a lucrative job boom flocked to dozens of coding boot camps and online technical programs.

Now comes the realization of the power of generative A.I., with its vast capabilities in skills like writing, programming and translation. (Microsoft, which owns LinkedIn, is a major investor in the technology.) LinkedIn researchers recently looked at which skills any given job requires and then identified over 500 likely to be affected by generative A.I. technologies. They then estimated that 96 percent of a software engineer’s current skills — mainly proficiency in programming languages — can eventually be replicated by A.I. Skills associated with jobs like legal associates and finance officers will also be highly exposed.

In fact, given the broad impact A.I. is set to have, it is quite likely to affect all of our work to some degree or another.

We believe there will be engineers in the future, but they will most likely spend less time coding and more time on tasks like collaboration and communication. We also believe that there will be new categories of jobs that emerge as a result of A.I.’s capabilities — just like we’ve seen in past moments of technological advancement — and that those jobs will probably be anchored increasingly around people skills.

Circling around this research is the big question emerging across so many conversations about A.I. and work, namely: What are our core capabilities as humans?

If we answer that question from a place of fear about what’s left for people in the age of A.I., we can end up conceding a diminished view of human capability. Instead, it’s critical for us all to start from a place that imagines what’s possible for humans in the age of A.I. When you do that, you find yourself focusing quickly on people skills that allow us to collaborate and innovate in ways technology can amplify but never replace. And you find yourself — whatever the role or career stage you’re in — with agency to better manage this moment of historic change.

Communication is already the most in-demand skill across jobs on LinkedIn today. Even experts in A.I. are observing that the skills we need to work well with A.I. systems, such as prompting, are similar to the skills we need to communicate and reason effectively with other people.

Over 70 percent of executives surveyed by LinkedIn last year said soft skills were more important to their organizations than highly technical A.I. skills. And a recent Jobs for the Future survey found that 78 percent of the 10 top-employing occupations classified uniquely human skills and tasks as “important” or “very important.” These are skills like building interpersonal relationships, negotiating between parties and guiding and motivating teams.

Now is the time for leaders, across sectors, to develop new ways for students to learn that are more directly, and more dynamically, tied to where our economy is going, not where it has been. Critically, that involves bringing the same level of rigor to training around people skills that we have brought to technical skills.

Colleges and universities have a critical role to play. Over the past few decades, we have seen a prioritization of science and engineering, often at the expense of the humanities. That calibration will need to be reconsidered.

Those not pursuing a four-year degree should look for those training providers that have long emphasized people skills and are invested in social capital development.

Employers will need to be educators not just around A.I. tools but also on people skills and people-to-people collaboration. Major employers like Walmart and American Airlines are already exploring ways to put A.I. in the hands of employees so they can spend less time on routine tasks and more time on personal engagement with customers.

Ultimately, for our society, this comes down to whether we believe in the potential of humans with as much conviction as we believe in the potential of A.I. If we do, it is entirely possible to build a world of work that not only is more human but also is a place where all people are valued for the unique skills they have, enabling us to deliver new levels of human achievement across so many areas that affect all of our lives, from health care to transportation to education. Along the way, we could meaningfully increase equity in our economy, in part by addressing the persistent gender gap that exists when we undervalue skills that women bring to work at a higher percentage than men.

Almost anticipating this moment a few years ago, Minouche Shafik, who is now the president of Columbia University, said: “In the past, jobs were about muscles. Now they’re about brains, but in the future, they’ll be about the heart.”

The knowledge economy that we have lived in for decades emerged out of a goods economy that we lived in for millenniums, fueled by agriculture and manufacturing. Today the knowledge economy is giving way to a relationship economy, in which people skills and social abilities are going to become even more core to success than ever before. That possibility is not just cause for new thinking when it comes to work force training. It is also cause for greater imagination when it comes to what is possible for us as humans not simply as individuals and organizations but as a species.

Senior Vice President & Chief People Officer at CNFA overseeing the culture of positive engagement with its employees globally.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the modern workplace, the importance of fostering a diverse, inclusive environment is often understated and overlooked—consciously or unconsciously. Now more than ever, we must underscore that inclusion isn't just a buzzword or an action item to check off a list. It's a fundamental driver for achieving success.

As HR leaders, it's imperative to show your workforce that true inclusion is about a "one human being" experience, irrespective of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and other identifiers. It goes beyond mere representation, encompassing a commitment to embracing differences and ensuring everyone feels valued and respected.

Here are six impactful areas that highlight the compelling significance of inclusion in the workplace and how prioritizing it can contribute to overall organizational success.

1. Talent Attraction And Retention

When organizations prioritize inclusion and flexibility, they're more likely to attract top talent. Jobseekers will be drawn to your company if they know it celebrates diversity and provides equal access to opportunities. Moreover, inclusive workplaces tend to retain talent more effectively because employees are more likely to stay in environments where they feel supported and respected .

As an HR leader, there are a few strategies you can use to center inclusivity in your recruitment and talent management efforts. Consider implementing unbiased hiring practices, promoting equal opportunities for growth and fostering a workplace culture that embraces diversity.

2. Employee Engagement And Satisfaction

Connection is one of five workplace essentials when it comes to workers' psychological health and well-being. When you prioritize inclusion, you help cultivate a sense of belonging and community among employees. When people feel their unique perspectives are being honored, they're more engaged in their work. This enhances job satisfaction, morale and overall well-being because everyone feels they can contribute meaningfully toward your organization's goals.

3. Innovation And Creativity

Businesses must generate groundbreaking solutions if they want to stay ahead of the curve in an ever-changing business landscape. When they have diverse teams, they're more able to tap into new ways of thinking. But this requires an environment where employees know their creativity and innovation will be nurtured.

Try leveraging cross-functional teams so employees from all over your company can collaborate on projects and find innovative solutions by combining their diverse perspectives. At my organization, CNFA, we decided to embrace collaborative problem-solving when we were reevaluating our office space needs. We interviewed a sampling of our employee population and learned that they wanted dedicated thinking rooms or focus areas, as well as open communal areas, to be included in the redesign. Many felt this would help encourage spontaneous interactions and idea exchanges.

4. Enhanced Decision-Making

Having a diverse group involved in your organization's decision-making processes can encourage more extensive discussion and consideration of potential outcomes. This helps decision-makers avoid the pitfalls of groupthink . This kind of homogenous mindset increases the risk of biased decisions, potentially leading to suboptimal decision-making because people might hesitate to voice dissenting opinions or concerns out of fear of disrupting the group's harmony. While teams engaged in groupthink may make quick decisions, the speed doesn't guarantee the best choice.

It's crucial to promote diversity of thought and ensure open communication within your workplace. By creating inclusive teams, everyone can benefit from a range of perspectives, mitigate knee-jerk reactions and foster more well-rounded, thoughtful decision-making.

5. Improved Customer And Client Relationships

In a globalized marketplace, inclusive organizations are able to better understand and relate to the needs of a diverse clientele. By bringing a range of cultural insights and communication skills, you can see positive results like improved customer satisfaction and stronger business relationships .

When your organization incorporates diverse perspectives, it can develop inclusive marketing strategies that resonate with a broad audience. This will help position you as a socially responsible brand that appeals to all customers. Recognizing the varied backgrounds of customers and clients may enable you to expand your customer base, enhance loyalty and foster a positive reputation.

6. Regulatory Considerations

Beyond the moral imperative, there are legal and ethical reasons for prioritizing inclusion in the workplace. Discrimination and exclusion issues can lead to legal consequences that pose reputational risks—some of which are irreparable. By fostering an inclusive culture, you can ensure you're complying with anti-discrimination laws, as well as demonstrating your commitment to good governance and ethical business practices. To stay abreast of DEI-related changes in law, I highly recommend joining industry associations so you can take advantage of the vast resources on all things work, including up-to-date news.

When your organization prioritizes diversity and inclusion, you can tap into your workforce's full potential and be better positioned to thrive in a competitive environment. Beyond benefitting from enhanced innovation, employee engagement and talent retention, you'll also contribute to a more equitable, harmonious society. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st-century workplace, embracing inclusion is not a choice; it's a strategic imperative for sustained business success.
