The Hero's Journey 3 Pages 733 Words
Joseph Campbell lays out his idea of the hero's journey that every hero experiences in his own myth. This journey involves an initial position in society which the hero must leave. The hero will experience a call to adventure that will motivate him to exit his society. During this process, the hero is likely to have some sort of a helper along the way. On the road to his main quest, the hero will have to pass many tests that will prepare him for the main event. After this series of tests, the hero will undertake the quest that he initially set out to complete. In the final stage of the hero's journey, there is a return back to society in which an elixir is brought back with the hero. When the journey is completed the adventurer is recognized as a hero in his home. This path is followed by most heroes that are seen within mythology. One of these heroes is the Greek demigod Theseus. Theseus begins as a boy who lives with his mother. The mother symbolizes the society in which Theseus belongs and leaves. When Theseus learns that he is the son of a king and therefore a prince and the rightful successor to the throne of Athens, he wishes to track down and meet his father to claim his title as prince. There is a barrier that stands in his way. He is too small to hold his own on the field of battle. This is Theseus's call to adventure. In this case the helper to the hero is a seagull that Theseus meets on the beach. This helper teaches him to utilize his small size to his advantage in order to become a solid fighter. At the end of the seagull's counseling, the gull jumpstarts Theseus into his series of tests by presenting him with a sword in stone that only he can wield. By order of the seagull, our hero takes a dangerous road to the place of his father. Along this dangerous road he must defeat a series of enemies. He does so using the advice of the seagull and his wit. These exercises act as a pre...
