My First Day At University Essay 1000 Words, My first day at university was associated with a wide variety of feelings, including nervousness and excitement. Even though I had lived away from home for a while, I still made a point of seeing my parents around the holidays.

The realization that I would be living away from home hit me like a tonne of bricks, and I was simultaneously terrified and excited to live independently while attending school. 

All of my high school worries returned as soon as I set foot on the campus of my college. It was already scorching outside around nine in the morning. On either side of a long, winding route that sliced through dense grass, the trees were arrayed like soldiers.

It appeared that everyone on campus had somewhere to be except for me as the leaves fluttered and danced as if they were in a hurry to reach somewhere significant.

I began to consider how much more responsibility being a college student would entail for me as I made my way deeper into campus because, for the first time in my life, there would be no one else to blame if something went wrong.

Thinking about this, I suddenly made the decision to look for my dorm. I felt like everyone was looking at me as I walked across campus in search of my dorm, and I could see the reddening of my face. Everyone around me looked exactly like me, but more self-assured, as I walked along a different hallway with people passing by.

I didn’t even sure which building to enter to find my accommodation; it appeared like everyone else knew where they were going except me. I eventually found it after going through a few different buildings!

I entered after noticing two strangers conversing on their mattresses since the number on my door matched the one on my paper.

When they saw me walk in, they stopped talking and gave me an odd look. One of them inquired about my questions and then informed me that she would shortly be going because she had class. When everyone finally left the class, I was left alone, so I made the decision to go.

Advice on planning and writing essays and dissertations

University essays differ from school essays in that they are less concerned with what you know and more concerned with how you construct an argument to answer the question. This means that the starting point for writing a strong essay is to first unpick the question and to then use this to plan your essay before you start putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard).

A really good starting point for you are these short, downloadable Tips for Successful Essay Writing and Answering the Question resources. Both resources will help you to plan your essay, as well as giving you guidance on how to distinguish between different sorts of essay questions. 

You may find it helpful to watch this seven-minute video on six tips for essay writing which outlines how to interpret essay questions, as well as giving advice on planning and structuring your writing:

Different disciplines will have different expectations for essay structure and you should always refer to your Faculty or Department student handbook or course Canvas site for more specific guidance.

However, broadly speaking, all essays share the following features:

Essays need an introduction to establish and focus the parameters of the discussion that will follow. You may find it helpful to divide the introduction into areas to demonstrate your breadth and engagement with the essay question. You might define specific terms in the introduction to show your engagement with the essay question; for example, ‘This is a large topic which has been variously discussed by many scientists and commentators. The principle tension is between the views of X and Y who define the main issues as…’ Breadth might be demonstrated by showing the range of viewpoints from which the essay question could be considered; for example, ‘A variety of factors including economic, social and political, influence A and B. This essay will focus on the social and economic aspects, with particular emphasis on…..’

The main body of the essay should elaborate on the issues raised in the introduction and develop an argument(s) that answers the question. It should consist of a number of self-contained paragraphs each of which makes a specific point and provides some form of evidence to support the argument being made. Remember that a clear argument requires that each paragraph explicitly relates back to the essay question or the developing argument.

  • Conclusion: An essay should end with a conclusion that reiterates the argument in light of the evidence you have provided; you shouldn’t use the conclusion to introduce new information.
  • References: You need to include references to the materials you’ve used to write your essay. These might be in the form of footnotes, in-text citations, or a bibliography at the end. Different systems exist for citing references and different disciplines will use various approaches to citation. Ask your tutor which method(s) you should be using for your essay and also consult your Department or Faculty webpages for specific guidance in your discipline.

If you are writing an essay for a science subject you may need to consider additional areas, such as how to present data or diagrams. Extended essays and dissertations

Longer pieces of writing like extended essays and dissertations may seem like quite a challenge from your regular essay writing. The important point is to start with a plan and to focus on what the question is asking. Planning your time effectively

Try not to leave the writing until close to your deadline, instead start as soon as you have some ideas to put down onto paper. Your early drafts may never end up in the final work, but the work of committing your ideas to paper helps to formulate not only your ideas, but the method of structuring your writing to read well and conclude firmly.

Although many students and tutors will say that the introduction is often written last, it is a good idea to begin to think about what will go into it early on. For example, the first draft of your introduction should set out your argument, the information you have, and your methods, and it should give a structure to the chapters and sections you will write. Your introduction will probably change as time goes on but it will stand as a guide to your entire extended essay or dissertation and it will help you to keep focused.

The structure of  extended essays or dissertations will vary depending on the question and discipline, but may include some or all of the following:

  • The background information to - and context for - your research. This often takes the form of a literature review.
  • Explanation of the focus of your work.
  • Explanation of the value of this work to scholarship on the topic.
  • List of the aims and objectives of the work and also the issues which will not be covered because they are outside its scope.

The main body of your extended essay or dissertation will probably include your methodology, the results of research, and your argument(s) based on your findings.

The conclusion is to summarise the value your research has added to the topic, and any further lines of research you would undertake given more time or resources. 

Tips on writing longer pieces of work

Approaching each chapter of a dissertation as a shorter essay can make the task of writing a dissertation seem less overwhelming. Each chapter will have an introduction, a main body where the argument is developed and substantiated with evidence, and a conclusion to tie things together. Unlike in a regular essay, chapter conclusions may also introduce the chapter that will follow, indicating how the chapters are connected to one another and how the argument will develop through your dissertation.

Top tips for writing your first university essay

Moving from A-level (or equivalent) standard of writing to the expectations required for a degree might seem a little daunting, so to help, UCL student Saumark Bhaumick lists her top tips for writing effective essays.

1. Set the standard 

Understanding your academic discipline in relation to your year is the first step to writing a great university essay.  A final-year history essay is going to be very different from a biology essay set for a first-year student.

You should identify what the basic requirements of essays in your field are. This includes common essay structure, tone, and referencing.

If you’re not sure on the answers to these, ask your module tutor for essay examples from previous first year students with similar work from relevant sources. 

2. Understand structuring

Now that you’ve identified what the expectation is for your first essay, you can begin to think about your structure.  To do this, consider what the word limit is. Using essay examples from step 1, allocate a rough percentage for each section in your structure.

For example, you may decide to give 20% of the word count for each main body paragraph, and 10% each to the introduction and conclusion.

3. Plan your essay

At this stage, creating a plan and allocating the appropriate time for each of the stages will really help you. Here’s an example:

  • Research two points for my main argument (3 days)
  • Research two points for my counter argument (3 days)
  • Write the main argument (1 day)
  • Write up the counter argument (1 day)
  • Write my introduction and conclusion (1 day)
  • Referencing and asking someone for feedback (1 day)

4. Research your sources

The research stage will most probably be the most interesting, and the most time-consuming.  Here you should focus on learning and building up your notes, so that when it comes to writing, you can simply reword what you’ve already found.

To do this, know which websites to use for sources (journals, papers etc.) such as UCL Explore , Google Scholar , JSTOR . You can also do this by asking your Module Tutor for recommended sites and databases.

Make sure to read through sources efficiently and track what parts are relevant to your essay question by making your own notes from these sources.

5. Write from your sources and reference correctly

Now you can use the most relevant parts of your research notes to write the essay.

Make sure you don’t copy your notes (created from the sources) word for word! You don’t want to plagiarise for a number of reasons, and UCL’s Turnitin System will find out. 

Add in the sources for each relevant idea to get references. You can reference properly at the end or as you go – both are fine – but make sure you have a rough way to keep track of which sources you’ve used!

Having identified which style of referencing you should use (e.g. Harvard, Vancouver etc.), you can use websites such as Mybib , Citethisforme or Mendeley to easily create a proper, error-free Bibliography and In-text citations.

6. Get feedback 

If you have enough time for this stage, you’ve done well! It would be wise to send your essay draft to your Module Tutor or Personal Tutor and ask for some feedback.

We have another new student blogger, also from the   University of Bristol . Her name is Emilia Morano-Williams, and she comes to us from the US. She is currently a fourth year Italian student, originally from New York. In her first entry she takes us back to her first few weeks in Bristol, including the attention her accent attracted, and more....

'I had seen Bristol a couple of times before I arrived there for university, but, from the moment I landed in Heathrow, I could tell that this time would be different. There was no return ticket, there was no easy lifting the suitcase and there was no way to enter the country without having my fingerprints scanned. I was here as more than a tourist, I was here to live.

Things have changed a lot since then, but my first few days in  Bristol  as a student have become the benchmark by which I measure how much I’ve grown since arriving at university. The awkward exchanges with possible friends, the blank room with a single university-issued poster hanging on the wall and even the frequent inability to eat this completely foreign food felt all encompassing back then. Little did I know that all those funny moments wouldn’t last.

I moved into halls much like the other students. My parents and I arrived with a couple suitcases at Churchill Hall in Bristol and walked into the painfully bare room. Within a few minutes everything was out and had a place. I had barely any belongings and my room resembled a bare Travelodge rather than a place in which I would be spending my first year of university. I glanced out onto the quad, a unique feature of my hall, and saw the other students moving in box after box. Could I ever forget the kid who brought his own television or a box of beer? Nope, not yet anyway.

Of course, the first day all passes in the longest whirlwind of your life. Soon my parents left and I went to say hi to the other students who I could see and hear chatting happily from my window. Once I said hi and began meeting people, it was easy to keep going. People heard my accent from the moment I began speaking and, just like that, we had a conversation going. There seemed to be a shockingly large amount of people who knew each other already, but I just shrugged it off with a smile that’s largeness probably betrayed the nerves that I felt.

Things got easier and harder after the first day. My first week of university life fell into the predictable pattern of attending induction talks, getting lost wandering around the university, trying to make friends and figuring out where to find the most basic of items. All of a sudden extension cords, mouthwash and folders became exotic items. When I wake up the first morning, I made the mistake of counting how many days until Christmas break would begin.  In that moment, as the fear of spending ninety days away from home hit me, I learnt the most important lesson of my university career: take it one day at a time. I’ve been living peacefully with that mindset ever since.

During the first few weeks, I was hyper aware of not wanting to seem too foreign. All my images of international students came from movies and television shows where they were put into the corner and observed as if their culture was so completely different. Yet, I soon realized that because I was fortunate enough to speak English as a first language and to have spent many months travelling through England before arriving at university, the cultural differences weren’t as stark as I expected them to be. People would ask me questions about where I came from, but when we discovered common interests, those queries quickly gave way to other topics. If people thought of me as foreign, they certainly didn’t show that. I soon began to stop thinking of myself as foreign and just thought of myself as a Bristol student.  Sure, it was hard when I talked to friends back home who were pleasantly ticking off all the required college experiences and got to go home at the weekend, but living abroad became less about being an American in a new country and turned into me having new experiences.

For me, the social and cultural struggles of arriving at university occupied more of my mental space than academic issues. I found it relatively easy to integrate into new classes and soon began to enjoy my schedule. The beginning of university is difficult for everyone, but as an international student it can be easy to think that you are the only one experiencing these issues because you are international. I didn’t realize it until later in the year, but everyone was struggling with the shift to university in their own way. It’s a culture shock to everyone; we just experience it in different ways.'

I decided to take admission in Government College which was the biggest college of my city. I had heard a lot of stories about college life from my elder sibling and relatives. According to them college is not as strict as school. I was full of excitement, inner joy and high hopes for a promising future. I thought college life would be full of pleasures and of course it was. College life is not as strict as the school life.

On the very first day, I got up early in the morning as I was much excited for the college life. I offered Dawn Prayer and took a hearty bath and got ready for the college. I could even do breakfast because of excitement. As soon as I stepped into the college, I felt like I have entered a new world. It was indeed a completely new world for me. The college had a wonderful building, lovely playgrounds and devoted Professors. The grand traditions, good mannerism, and liberal atmosphere made a great difference to my life. My first-day entry in college always fascinates me. My first day was an unforgettable experience of my educational life.

However, we decided to act together to avoid their practical jokes. Some of the senior were approaching us with an air of superiority. They were large in number so they made us subdue immediately. They asked us to do strange things like singing ridiculous songs and doing monkey pranks. The sense of self- respect did not allow me to act according to their wishes. Still they forced me to obey their orders. I felt a little humiliated but took it sportingly.

Meanwhile, a senior Professor of the college came to our rescue. He asked the boys to assemble in the hall were the Principal would address them. We want to the hall. The Principal addressed the students and advised them not to take part in politics at college. They should pay full attention to their studies and try their best to achieve their goal. Afterwards, a Professor guided us about our time-table and class rooms.

Our first period was of English. We want to the classroom and set on the benches. A Professor entered the room, the boys stood up greet him. He took our roll-call and entered the names of the students in his attitude register. He did not teach us but advised us about our future life. He stressed what we should not misuse the liberty here rather we should keep full use of the opportunity to achieve our end. Afterwards, we moved another room where our teacher in Arabic came. He delivered his lecture on the importance of Arabic language and advised us to come to the class with our books. Then there was no other period on that day. So, we want to the library and read some newspapers. We discussed the lecture of our teacher and decided to work very hard from the beginning to get through the examinations getting very good marks. Then we left the library, shook hands with one another and departed. I took a bus and reached my home. I found a considerable between the school life and that of college. I concluded that liberty or freedom must not be misused at all.

College is dreamland of every student’s educational career. It is a beautiful period of learning, enjoyment, freedom and friendship. Sweet memories of college life are simply amazing. They have an everlasting impact on human memory.

At the end of the first day, I returned home. When I was returning home, all the memories of my first day at College came to my mind. It was like a film. It had fun and fear. I remembered all the happenings and reached home with a smile. I had entered the college to gain knowledge and wisdom and to become a good citizen. Thanks, Almighty Allah I got what I wished. I wrote my memories in a special notebook.

In the end, I can say that college life is a beautiful blend of joys and memories. Right from my first day, every day spent in College was full of colorful events. Surely, College life is an ideal part of student life.

Your first week at University. It’s more important than you realize. It’s important because you have the opportunity in that first week to put in place the habits that will lead to success or failure in your university experience.

Starting strong helps you to feel on top, in control, and ready to succeed in university life. Falling behind makes you feel like you’re always playing catch up.

You need to feel in Control.

There’s a concept called ‘locus of control’. Your locus of control contains all the elements of your life that you feel in control of. Make sure you feel in control of your university life by the end of Fresher’s week.

Do you feel like you can confidently navigate your way to class? Do you feel you can confidently talk to your classmates, your teacher, and your academic tutor? Do you feel like you can access books, journal articles, and resources that you need to succeed? These are the sorts of things you need to start focusing on in your first week at university.

Success with all these things – finding books and journal articles , knowing teachers and classmates – is within your grasp. You need to be confident about accessing them.

To feel confident about accessing your resources and your community of support, you need to make the effort to actually use them. Use and build your social network in your first week at university in order to get off on the right foot.

Below are seven essential things you need to do in your first week at university to make sure you feel in control, capable, and ready to succeed.

If you’re well past your first week of university or even your first semester of university, that’s okay. Set yourself this seven-day challenge to set yourself back on the path to success.

1. First Day at University: Walk Around Campus

Monday. 9 am. It’s your first day at university. Now’s the time to get started. Get ahead. Get going on your path to success.

As soon as you’ve gotten your timetable, map out your path to your classes. Start where you enter the university: the parking lot, the bus stop, or the front gate.

From there, walk out the exact routes to each class.

Here, you’re going to have to muster up some courage to ask around for where different buildings and rooms are. I usually try to spot someone wearing a student ambassador t-shirt. They’re usually everywhere during orientation weeks.

Universities have this bad habit of poorly signposting room names and numbers. So, don’t just know what building the room is. Know exactly what room you’re heading to. Walk right up to the door.

You’ll find it was harder than you thought. Especially when buildings and rooms are given abbreviations and codes. You’ll find your timetable has a very unclear code like “Room CL1.07”, which means nothing to a new student.

It’ll take you a good half hour of wandering around aimlessly before you realize CL1.07 means the 7 th room on your left on the first floor of the Clarendon Building, etc.

There is nothing worse than feeling lost on your way to class on your first day at university. On the first day of Fresher’s week when you’re nervous and feeling overwhelmed, you don’t need this added stress.

Once you’ve mapped out your path to each of your classes on your first day at university, you might also want to spend some more time walking around campus to get familiar with it.

Do you know how to walk to the bathroom? The cafeteria? The library? Give yourself the afternoon to walk around, get to know the place, and soak it all in.

2. Second Day at University: Borrow a Book from the Library

One very important place to check out at some point between the drinking and socializing (or hiding from strangers) in Fresher’s week is the library.

The top students make the library their best friend from Day 1 at university. The library is your lifeline for so much more than getting books. The library is:

  • The place to hang out when you’ve got an hour of dead time between classes;
  • The place where you’re guaranteed to find a university employee sitting behind a desk, there to help;
  • A safe spot to disappear when you’re wanting to hide from a professor, classmate, or the world;
  • The home of dozens of resources for success, including books, computers, rentable video cameras, and additional classes

In your first week at university, the number one strategy for success is to make sure you borrow a book from the library.

It doesn’t matter what the book is. The point is to make sure you know how to do it .

It is remarkable how many of my students in their third year at a university still don’t know how to borrow a book. Most of them feel like it’s too late now to borrow a book. They feel embarrassed about admitting that they don’t know how to do it.

By borrowing a book in your first week at university, you’re familiarising yourself with the process. It makes using the library resources more familiar and easier to do. By doing this, you’ll be more likely to use the library to borrow textbooks for your future assignments . It’ll improve your university experience.

The more you use the library, the more useful it will become. Getting in the habit of using the library resources should start on Day 1.

After all, if you don’t use the library, then you paid a heck of a lot of money to not borrow books!

3. Third Day at University: Find Your Favorite Spot

You need a place where you feel comfortable. One specific spot where you can retreat for a moment to study, eat lunch or hide out between classes.

I recommend to my students to find one spot in the library and one spot in a public open space.

  • The library spot is where you feel comfortable sitting and studying. Walk around each floor of the library and soak up the atmosphere. Libraries tend to have different areas that have different feels. Some areas are noisy, others dead quiet. Some areas have lots of wide-open spaces, others have nooks in which you can bury yourself away. When I was doing my Ph.D. I loved my nook in the library. It was buried behind the books that I used the most, and it was almost always free. There was a window looking out over a grassy area where students would walk between classes. I grabbed a comfortable chair from another area of the library and dragged it over to the desk in the corner, and that chair stayed by that desk – my desk – for the next few years. A comfortable library spot will increase your productivity and your comfort on campus. Make yourself feel at home somewhere in the library and you’re more likely to keep returning there. Before you know it, you’ll be craving those quiet moments in the library where you can feel like you’re getting all your work done.
  • The social spot is your spot to go when you’re not studying. It’s under a tree, at your favorite picnic table, or at your preferred table in the cafeteria. The purpose of a spot that you prefer away from the library is to make sure you’ve got somewhere to retreat to between classes for lunch, a coffee, or a chat with friends. One nice thing about the social spot is it can be a space where you can meet up with friends. When you start making friends in classes, they’ll come to know where you hang out, and they’ll join you. Making these routine places to sit and eat, drink coffee and talk with classmates will improve your experience at university and make you more likely to get through the degree feeling fresh and happy.

My challenge to you is to find two spots on campus in your first week at university. Know these exact spots, make sure they’re ones that make you feel comfortable and return to them whenever you’re not quite sure what to do with yourself on campus.

Even if you’re part-way through your first semester at university or even three years into your degree, it’s not too late. Find your comfy spots immediately.

4. Fourth Day at University: Book into a Library Workshop Seminar

This is the secret weapon of top students.

Workshop seminars are attended by very few students. I find that it tends to be the same students who make use of these seminars. They’ll churn through all of them, and they’ll do very well in their degree as a result.

The first year of university is the key time to make use of the library workshop seminar. In fact, Tanguay and Hanratty (2017) show that the first year is when most students use the Library Workshops.

This would indicate that there are likely also a lot of workshops tailored specifically for you – the first-year student!

So, I strongly recommend making use of the library seminar workshops.

The first thing you need to do is go on to your university’s library website and look up and down the sidebars for the Workshops link. 95% of university libraries will have a link like this. In fact, librarians are usually falling all over themselves to promote these workshops.

Peruse the list of workshops that are available and choose one that you think will be most useful to you. Here’s a list of common Workshops that libraries offer:

  • Introduction to referencing
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Writing essay plans

Once you’ve chosen one, follow the website’s instructions for booking yourself into the workshop.

Library Study Skills Workshops Don’t be intimidated by library workshops. They’re usually quite relaxed compared to class seminars. The librarians are usually the most helpful people on campus and they’ll make you feel right at home.

You paid good money for these services. Make use of them, and don’t fall behind. Attend the library seminar workshops.

5. Fifth Day at University: Join a Club

I was always very nervous about joining clubs at university. It’s intimidating at first.

But as with most of the points in this post, the idea is to get the anxiety-inducing stuff out of the way in the first week of university. Once you’ve joined the club and attended its first event, you’ll find you didn’t regret joining in.

There are two big benefits of joining a club at university:

  • Developing a support network . This is the most obvious and useful reason for joining a club. If you know names and faces walking past you at university, you’re less likely to feel alone and out of place. A small amount of awkwardness at the start of the university will pay big dividends down the track when you start to feel excited about going to university to be a part of your community.
  • Building contacts . Contacts really do matter at university. One of the biggest payoffs of a university degree is getting to know people in your industry. These people who you get to know in your club will one day be the people who recommend you for the next job that opens up in your industry. Getting to know people at university pays off for your future.

Most universities have a thriving club network. You can choose one that works for you. Usually, universities have clubs in at least these few areas:

  • Mature-age students club
  • International students club

If you don’t join a club in your first week at university, you’ll be less and less likely to join up in your second, third, and fourth weeks. In other words, do it now, and don’t delay!

If you’re not sure where to go to get information about clubs, go to the student union building. The person behind the desk there will be able to point you in the right direction.

Alternatively, keep an eye out for club members handing out flyers or sitting behind makeshift desks in the main square of the campus. They’re all over the place on Fresher’s week!

6. Sixth Day at University: Join a Facebook Group

Joining Facebook groups is a great way to build social contacts, feel more comfortable in your classes, and get valuable inside advice.

There are two Facebook groups that you’ll want to join. We can classify these as ‘class-specific’ and ‘degree- / major-specific’ groups.

1. Class-specific Facebook Groups

Every single class I’ve taught in the last few years has had active Facebook networks directly linked to the class they were studying.

The benefit of joining a class-specific Facebook group is that you get insider information on your class. You’ll find out what other students are struggling with, you’ll pick up on information other students heard from your teacher, and you’ll learn how other students are going about completing the same assignments as you.

However, bear in mind that a class Facebook group should never replace direct contact with your teacher . Facebook groups are gossip mills.

You can’t fully trust what’s said on college Facebook groups.

Furthermore, directly contacting your teacher makes sure they know your name and gives them a sense that you really care about your mark. This pays big dividends in growing your marks.

I’ve written elsewhere on this website about the benefits of emailing your teacher which goes into detail on how and when you should contact your teacher in order to build your marks.

To find the class-specific Facebook group, run some Facebook searches that include:

  • Your university name;
  • The course title; and
  • The year/semester of study.

Class Facebook groups are usually closed groups, so you’ll need to click the link to request access.

2. Degree- or Major- specific Facebook Groups

If you’re in a cohort-based degree or have already declared your major there’s a good chance there’s a degree-specific Facebook page set up for you to be part of.

Facebook pages are very beneficial for learning about the quirks of your various teachers, what they expect out of you, and what to look out for in upcoming classes.

When I was studying for my undergraduate degree, we all knew that our upcoming Teaching the Science Curriculum course was going to be an absolute nightmare. All over Facebook our older friends were telling us about what tiny things our teacher would nit-pick about in our assignments.

Learning these little insider tips from Facebook groups saved me a lot of time and helped me keep my grades up, especially in the super hard subjects.

Degree- and Major- specific Facebook groups also allow you to get in contact with other students who are about to or have just, graduated. These students are important social networks for you. They will develop industry knowledge a few steps ahead of you and will have their ear to the ground when job offers come knocking.

Therefore, you should aim to add regular posters on these Facebook groups as friends. Reply to their comments on the group page, and make sure they know who you are.

7. Seventh Day at University: Introduce yourself to your Teachers

This can be the hardest step. The idea is to introduce yourself to your teacher in a way that’s organic. You don’t want to simply email your teacher and say “Hi, I’m super excited to meet you!”

Instead, wait until you have a pressing question to ask. Instead of asking it on the Facebook groups, get directly in touch with your teacher.

Introducing yourself to your teacher is useful because it will actually improve your mark.

If the teacher can put a face to the name when marking your assignment, they will think twice about your mark. If you’ve shown them you’re a diligent, engaged student, that might help tip them over the edge to giving you a higher mark.

Try to make your teacher fond of you!

Breaking the Ice with your Teacher: My recommendation is to make sure you talk to your teacher before or after class about a piece of information in the course that you found interesting. Ask them for clarification about a point in one of the readings they set you or ask for their opinion on the issue.

In this way, you’ll show them not only who you are and that you care about the topic, but also that you are genuinely interested in the work they’re assigning. This goes a long way toward ingratiating yourself with a teacher.

Your first week at university matters. Doing it right puts you on the path to success. The key to the first week at university is setting in motion the peer social networks, activities, and teacher relationships that you will need to succeed. It will significantly improve your university experience.

If your first week at university has passed (maybe you’re in your first semester at university, or even your third year!) these tips will still help. Get yourself back on track.

Once you’ve gotten into the right habits of joining the right groups and knowing where to go and what to do on campus, your university experience will be easier and less anxiety-inducing. You’ll feel in control.

What is the first week of university like?

Everyone experiences the first week of university differently. Some students dive right in like a duck to water, while others dip a cautious toe in, taking their time to explore university life. 

However, the first feelings of heading to university are the same all over the world – excitement and apprehension.

I collected stories from some university students sharing their experiences of their first weeks of university.

From awkward encounters, intense homesickness and a myriad bizarre moments, my freshers’ week (first week of university) experience was rough at the time but rather amusing in hindsight.

Hailed as “the best week of your life”, freshers’ week is your initiation into university life; a week full of binge drinking, social events and copious amounts of freebies. The somewhat infamous rite of passage sounds excellent to many but, for me, it really wasn’t.

I had left behind my former life in Birmingham; a supportive family, a great network of friends and the security of my comfort zone for this new phase of life, and I wasn’t quite ready.

I began my induction surrounded by my Big Supermarket Shop, after saying the final goodbye to my family, staring at a bottle of vodka that still had its security tag on (no, it was not stolen). 

After plucking up the courage to go and meet my flatmates, one of them decided to light his hand on fire as an ice-breaker. Worse still, the pyromaniac was going to be living next door to me. The night hit its crescendo when our college was invited to a quiz night (an attempt at inducing “mingling”). All was well (if a tad awkward) until I spilled my drink over our answer sheet and a housemate.

As the days rolled on, however, socialising became easier and I began to feel more comfortable. The events of the first night redeemed themselves; the shared struggle of opening the vodka bottle, my next-door neighbour curbed his enthusiasm for fire and turned out to be lovely, and the cider-covered housemate became, in time, my closest friend.

Yet, during that week – and truthfully, some that followed – I missed home and was afraid of what this new venture had in store. But, if I had known then that it would have all turned out fine, I think I would have savoured the experience more.

Freshers’ week is not necessarily going to be the time of your life, but remember that good things are to come.

Starting university in a foreign land comes with a lot of anxiety. Last September I landed in Budapest from India to start studying there. 

One thing that gave a sense of relief was Hungary’s welcoming attitude as evident from the long queue of international students at airport immigration. The lady scrutinising everybody at the airport counter smiled and in her broken English asked me my name and said, “Welcome to Hungary, little girl”. For a foreign student away from home, smiles are comforting but I realised that language was going to be an obstacle I needed to overcome.

At that point I wasn’t really sure what I was feeling. I constantly had to remind myself that cars drive on the right-hand side of the road and was in awe of how few people there were in comparison to my home in India.The architecture was immaculate.

I met a Kenyan girl on my way to the campus and we struck up a conversation about how a third country was uniting two countries.

During my first week I grew more independent – from buying groceries to networking.

Unlike in India, I stood out and that was a chance to create an impact. As scary as the first class was, it was also one of the most informative, as a gathering of students from several countries with a willingness to learn about each other and contribute their knowledge. I was sure that I wasn’t going to return the same person that I was when I arrived. I’m sure no student ever does.

When I decided to go to university in Japan as a full-time undergraduate student, I only knew conversational Japanese, which limited the depth of interaction I could have with non-English speakers. Additionally, I became dependent on native speakers for basic things such as opening a bank account or buying a phone. It was important to surround myself with other international students that were similarly trying to navigate a new country so as not to become isolated.

During the first few weeks I was flooded with information at orientations and my diary was packed with opportunities to socialise. Everything was moving so fast and it was a little overwhelming. But this was, I'm sure, how all the other first-years felt. 

With that in mind, I saw it as as an opportunity to participate in as many social activities as possible to establish my core group of friends and expand my broader network of contacts. Whether it was a campus tour or a group shopping run, I just went along. A morning tour led to lunch, an afternoon tour led to a dinner invite.

I previously believed that university would be an environment where I could find myself. On the contrary, at university it’s easy to lose yourself. Whether related to academic achievements, extracurricular activities, summer internships at prestigious firms or hunting for grad schemes, I initially fell into the trap of constantly comparing myself to others.

Especially during the first week of university when I talked to so many multitalented people and felt like an imposter. I’ve since realised that there is something only I can bring to the table.

I now encourage other British students to seek out the growing number of opportunities to study overseas at little or no cost, even just for a short period.

My first week at university was quite daunting, as I imagine it is for every new student. While generally I was quite excited, I was also nervous walking through the entrance and turning up for my registration as a new student. I did not want to go by myself, so my sister accompanied meon my first day because she had been to the same university to study law.

I remember my first week very clearly. I am studying German and international business and my parent school is the languages side of my degree, which meant that the introduction was hosted by the German department. After the introductory lecture they took us to a small area where we could have coffee and cake, mingle and get to know fellow students studying the same language.

I was worried that I would not make friends and would have to go through university all by myself. However, that thought immediately went down the drain on my first day.

One girl was walking among the students and asking everyone if they were studying the same course as her. And lo and behold, I was. From that day onwards we stuck together like glue as many of our lectures and seminars were the same. 

During freshers’ week I have never wanted to do so many different things when I saw all the different societies available. There are so many opportunities at university – you must utilise them all.

I realised that university is nothing to be frightened of. While it is absolutely normal to worry about making new friends, the number of new people you meet daily is incredible.

My first week at university was going to be the beginning of my new life. Unlike many of my peers at school and college, I didn’t take a gap year because I was too impatient to get started with being a university student. I hoped university would be the place where I became a different person: sophisticated, cultured, cool. It couldn’t come soon enough.

So I left home in Brighton to study English at Queen Mary University of London . My parents’ car was packed with stuff, mostly books, which I planned to display proudly in my flat. I had brought far too much. Students had to help us carry boxes of Nietzsche and Sartre and Virginia Woolf up to my little room.

Once my parents had gone, I set about trying to act like a student. I sat in my room playing Bob Dylan in an effort to impress my flatmates. I wasted money on a wristband to go to some bad and expensive clubs in town. I was on the search for the love of my life and the friends for life that everyone said you found at university.

Luckily, I met some great friends who were slightly older than me and could see through all the pressurising myths about what you were supposed to do as a fresher. Eventually, I relaxed a bit and started enjoying things that I actually wanted to do, like working on the student newspaper.

I look back on those days embarrassed by how cliched I was. But I was not comfortable in my own skin and I was the first person in my family to go to university: my only idea of what it was like to be a student came from books, film, and TV. It took time for me to be confident enough to do what I liked and go where I liked. Seven years on, my advice would be to live experimentally: to try things out and see what works for you.

Perhaps the most profound aspect of my first day at college was the sense of independence. Note : Today our topic is My First Day in University/ College Essay. Students who are getting an education in matric and inter class now they are finding.

The first day in college or in a university is always very exciting because of the new environment, new people, and obviously the new educational system. That is why it was a very good and lovely one morning when I was about to leave home for my first day at my university. Excitement was at its peak and adrenaline was flowing through me intensely. I was thrilled as well as slightly nervous regarding the new environment and even a little sad that my previous friends and class fellows were no longer my class fellows now, but that is just life as old people leave so that new ones are being made.

It was my first day at the university, College so I decided to wear one of the most decent and presentable dresses from my wardrobe and I took my bike and left for the university. All the way to my university several things were going through my mind regarding the new university, new friends and teachers, and how I will be able to come up with the adjustments. As soon as I reached the campus my eyes glowed as I saw the enormous and extraordinarily crafted campus of my university. I was still wondering about the campus when I got into a student who was walking, and the wheel of my bike banged into his ankle. He was hurt, I got to him, apologized, and was glad to see that he was not that hurt. After the apology we both introduced ourselves and I was again surprised that he was my class fellow and later became my very close friend.

My First Day in University Essay

When we both reached the center of the campus on my first day in University there were our seniors who were ragging the juniors and newcomers, and they were instructed to do very idiotic and very nonsense activities and tasks. We both were very annoyed with it and at the same time were slightly worried as well that this might also happen to us. And for that reason, we started to move away from them and tried to stay as much away from them as possible.

But our escape was not so productive as we both were being caught in the university café and it was time for us to be ragged, and what I got was so embarrassing. I was being prescribed to present a flower to a girl who was in my class fellow and was also a newcomer and even had to say to her that I LOVE You. This was just too much but we were forced to do it and I did that, but thanks to a girl who didn’t take it seriously as she was also aware of what was going on.

We then made our way to the class where there were several other students both male and female. We started conversations so that we could introduce ourselves and that is again what our teacher made us do. Our first lecture was so good and informative and it was the only lecture of our first day, after which we made our way back home. The first day was very much exciting, memorable, and pleasant.

This study is on Postgraduate Studies in Nigerian Universities: Issues and implications. The study employed a descriptive survey method and questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The total population for this study is 1,247 students. The sample size for the study was put at 30% (374) and was considered adequate using systematic sampling technique. The data obtained from the copies of questionnaires retrieved from respondents were analyzed using frequency count and percentages to answer the research questions. It was revealed from the study that Poor supervision as a result of under-qualified and inexperience supervisors, lack of sound research knowledge on the part of students, and poor relationship between supervisors and students among others are the major problems postgraduate students in Edo and Delta states encountered during the course of their programme. The study revealed that delay in the completion of the programmes, abandonment/high dropout rate and falling standard of Postgraduate Programme/Education are some of the major implications of Postgraduate Programme in Universities in Edo and Delta states.The study recommends that there is need for well-structured relationship between supervisors and their students to enhance smooth and commendable study.  My first day at college was an emotional experience for me, so writing about it was difficult for me. The day I started that new chapter of my life was a turning point in my life. I enrolled in Haji Muhammad Mohsin College after passing the SSC examination. On the first day, I arrived before 9 AM. My first action was to write the procedure on the notice board. It was a three-class day for me. It was English class first. In the classroom, I sat down.

 A large number of students were present. A lively conversation was taking place between them. There was a lot of interaction between the students. Though I had never met any of them before, I quickly made friends with a few of them. In the classroom, the professor arrived on time. The rolls were called very quickly at first. During his speech, he used English as his language.

 He discussed the responsibilities of a college student. My teachers’ lectures were enjoyable, and I enjoyed each class. In the afternoon, I visited several areas of the college after class. Compared to the college library, the college library was much larger. Thousands of books were on display, which amazed me. A memorable day in my life was my first day in college.

 It was an important day in my life when I attended college for the first time. I will never forget that day. When I was in school. My elder brothers and sisters provided me with a glimpse of college life. Having just started college, I looked forward to it with much anticipation. It seemed to me that college life would offer me a freer life, where there would be fewer restrictions and fewer teachers to worry about. It was finally the day that had been longed for.

 A government college was opened in my city. As soon as I stepped onto the college grounds, I was filled with hope and aspirations. Seeing the diversified perspective offered by the college was a pleasant surprise. I had never seen anything like it at our school or around it. Many unknown faces appeared in front of me.

 As a freshman in college, I experienced some very strange things. My surprise was sparked by seeing students playing indoor and outdoor games as well as listening to radio broadcasts during class time. It is not prohibited to wear a uniform. Students’ movements are free, as I observed. It is up to them to decide what they want to do.

 The newly admitted students were all in good spirits when I arrived. It was a pleasure to make friends with them all. It was a pleasure to move around the college. As I entered the college library, I was delighted to find books on every topic I wanted to learn about. On my first day at the college, I was keen to learn more about the laboratory and conduct experiments. The notice board displayed the timetable for my class. Attending classes was something I did. There is a difference between the method of teaching at the college and at the school.

 A specialized teacher teaches each subject. Classes do not ask questions. Failure to learn a lesson does not result in a reprimand from the professor. This is simply a matter of reminding students they have responsibilities. The school has a homely atmosphere, so students lack access to snacks. Therefore, they feel the comfortable rhythm of life has changed and I returned home feeling a mixture of duty and liberty.

There was a difference in classrooms between my classes and I was surprised by it.

It was English that I studied in my first class. It was time for me to take my seat in the classroom. Many students attended. A lively conversation was taking place between them. There was a lot of student interaction going on. I became friends with some of them in no time, despite not knowing any of them before. In the classroom, the professor arrived on time. He called the roll quickly. After that, he began to speak. 

English was his first language. College students have responsibilities and duties, he said. He held my attention raptly. It was a very informative lecture and I enjoyed it a lot. The next class was Bengali’s first paper. The class was held in a different classroom. Bengali short stories were the topic of the teacher’s lecture in that class. 

My previous school’s educational standards are different from the colleges I am attending. After attending the classes, I understood the difference. Additionally, the college had a better method of teaching. Students were treated politely by the professor as if they were friends.

Libraries, common rooms, and canteens at the college:

After attending the classes, I visited the different parts of the college. There was a large library at the college. Thousands of books were there, and I was astonished. It was a popular place to study. A large crowd of students was chatting in the students’ common. There were also indoor games being played by some of the students. Next, I stopped by the college canteen. Some of my friends and I had tea and snacks there. Everyone on campus was having a good time and enjoying themselves.

I was unfamiliar with the area, so I had to ask one person how to get there. This individual was really helpful and advised me in the proper direction. I couldn’t locate my classroom after being late for class. When I arrived at school, I noticed some people and felt strange. nI went up to one girl and asked if she knew where the classroom was. It’s fantastic when you know you’re in the same group; otherwise, I would have been really frightened.

After class, we all went to the cafeteria together and had lunch. It was a fantastic experience for me overall! nI’m glad that I was able to make new friends on my first day in university. Education is important, but so are the connections you make while learning.

We became friends. And this is the beginning of my first day in university. Education is very important for people in society to have better life and jobs. It’s a great chance for me to go to university, I want to make full use of it. This is the beginning of my first day in university, I will try my best to achieve good results. University is not only a place for academic learning, but also a place for students to socialize and make friends. Her complexion was a russet color, while her hair was a shady black. The moment when we first met each other is etched in my memory. My heart was beating loudly in my chest as her gaze fell upon me in that little room, and I still hear it throbbing inside of me.

It felt like time had frozen as we just looked at each other. I was entranced by her beauty. Eventually, we were both able to move and I introduced myself to her. Her name was Lily and she was from the United States. We talked for a while and I found out that she was studying Education at the University of Washington. I told her that I was also studying Education but at a different university. We exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch.

I never imagined that we would become such good friends. Lily has always been there for me, even when I am feeling low. She is one of the most compassionate and caring people I know. Education is important to both of us and we often discuss our passion for it.

Education has always been important to me. My parents placed a great emphasis on it and I always strived to do my best. When I got into university, I was determined to make the most of my education and get good grades.

I remember my first day at university vividly. I was so excited to start my journey but I was also a little nervous. I didn’t know anyone at university and I was worried about making friends. However, as soon as I met Lily, all of those worries dissipated. She made me feel comfortable and welcomed me into her group of friends.

Since that first day, university has been an amazing experience. I have made so many friends and learned so much.

The 2nd of march, 2015 year was the day that helped me to overcome one of my greatest fears. This was my first day at one of the most prestigious universities in Uzbekistan and nothing was familiar. I had just entered the doors of INHA University and started my life-changing journey.

I was trying to find the lecture room, but eventually I got lost in the labyrinth of the majestic building. I was embarrassed and many questions were running in my head. Where was my class? Where was the professor’s room? How should I behave with new classmates? However, all this questions were minor in comparison with my main fear. I began to panic.

From my earliest childhood, I was introvert. Therefore, I was afraid of talking to new people because I might look foolish and embarrass myself or just because I thought that, I could do everything by myself. In addition, by reason of nervousness I could start to stammer. Anyway, I had to find someone to help me because I could not be late for the first lesson!

Scraps of foreign speech were traveling from the room at the end of long corridor. Gathering courage, I decided to enter that room and ask for the help. Fortunately, a passing manager asked me if I have problems and kindly offered to accompany me to the classroom.

In a minute, we took a lift and I was on the threshold of the auditorium. To make a step forward was the most difficult action because the noisy classroom was full of new faces. Almost all places were occupied and I sat at the end of the row. In 5 minutes, the calculus professor Lee Yoon Weon came and silence reigned. Subject was not simple, but that was just a starter. I faced some difficulties related to educational process, but my classmates were very kind and were ready to help me at any time. Thereby I made new acquaintances. By the end of the day, I had learnt a lesson.

After the first day at INHA University, I understood that all problems can/could be solved much faster and easier, when you have a supporter. People around us not angry and always willing to help, just forget about your fears and make step forward to them!

I still remember my own personal essay that I wrote decades ago during my college admissions process. My essay focused on movies and how movies were a conduit of curiosity. It was also about the death of my father and how movies, in part, had provided a common ground for us—a connection. Although my essay, of course, was not the sole determining factor in my admission, it’s a predominant memory from that time of my life. To this day, I feel it had a persuasive effect on my admittance.

In fact, now looking back, I can’t recall my grade point average or my class rank or the final grade that my English teacher gave me on my literary analysis of Heart of Darkness. Even my exact SAT score, back then a real measure of academic aptitude, remains fuzzy to me all these years later, “shaded in wistful half-lights,” as described by Norman Maclean. I can, however, remember nearly every sentence, if not quite every word, of the personal essay I submitted to my first-choice college, which has undoubtedly, for me, over the years remained one of the most important pieces of writing I have ever produced.

These writers function as exemplars for my students to both analyze and model not only for their rhetorical value but also for their stylistic technique and philosophical ruminations.

Power of Personalization

One of the most predominant rhetorical strategies we recognize in these texts is personalization. And so Woolf’s “The Death of the Moth” has impacted my students throughout the years with its frank depiction of psychological tension, addressing philosophical themes on an existential level that never fail to capture their attention—so much so, that a group of students painted a mural on the wall outside my classroom, a visual interpretation of Woolf’s essay that they titled Memento Mori .

The candor and intimacy of Dr. Oliver Sacks’s depiction of his final days before his death from cancer have engendered numerous touching and insightful comments from my students during our Socratic seminars analyzing his almost unendurably moving personal essay, “My Periodic Table.” 

Students respond viscerally, it seems, to the personal. Sadly, many students have been touched by some of the same tragic subject matter that we analyze through these texts. During our seminars and journal assignments, my students have revealed their own personal connections to some of the personal essays we read in class, connecting, I think, to the shared experiences that we have all had throughout human history. 

Our students often find themselves facing a vortex of standardized tests, AP exams, and benchmarks throughout the school year, which often emphasize the formulaic. The active process of personal choice on topic and subject seems lost. So often my students ask me questions when writing an essay, seeking a particular answer, as if literary analysis were calculus. Missing is the creativity, the exploration of writing free from academic constraints like rubrics and scoring guides. Writer-editor Steve Moyer asserts in  Edsitement , “Nuanced thought... requires a greater gestation period than the nearly instant gratification made possible on Twitter.” I have witnessed this impatience from my own students.

There can be a restlessness in the writing process, a hesitancy for revision or drafting. Personal essays require self-reflection and a free-flowing freedom from rigid form that my students embrace in a way that they don’t with an argument or research-based essay. On more than one occasion during parent-teacher conferences, I have had parents tell me that their child used to love creative writing, but somewhere along the way, the rigor of school seemed to have killed it.

Personal essays, then, restore that creativity, since they encourage a freedom from form. Students can experiment with style and figurative language and syntax in ways that the traditional academic five-paragraph essay often thwarts.

Personal essays also allow teachers to really get to know our students, too. The inherent intimacy of a personal essay, the connection between the writer and the reader—in this case, a student and a teacher—provides insight into the concerns, the dreams, the emotions of our students in addition to allowing us to assess how they exercise their compositional skills, including imagery, syntax, diction, and figurative language. Here, then, a teacher has the best of both worlds. We’re able to both connect to our students on an emotional level and evaluate their learning on an academic level. Personal essays also serve as an emotional outlet. 

There seems to be a common assumption that personal essays for high school students serve only the college application process, so the process begins during their senior year. Personal writing, however, should occur throughout a student’s academic experience. The narrative essays that most elementary school students encounter evolve into the more ruminative, philosophical, and reflective personal writing they will encounter during their senior year from many of Common App essay prompts.

Many teachers implement journal writing in their classrooms that provides a firm foundation for the type of personal writing that the college admissions essay requires. In my own class of juniors, the last assignment we complete for the year is a personal essay. My intent is to help prepare them for the college essay they will write, hopefully, during the summer so that they will have a solid draft before the application process begins. 

Teaching our students this strategy in their own writing benefits them in their futures, not only for the imminent college application process but also for job interviews. For example, I was mentoring a student, a senior who had no desire to go to college, about the job interview process he would soon face after graduation. We rehearsed and practiced the types of questions he might encounter from a future employer. I encouraged him to remember the personal details of his experience, personalizing everything in a way that would allow him to ideally stand out as a job candidate.

Through personal essay writing, my overarching, grand ambition is to instill in my students ultimately a love of reflection, looking back on their experience, reminiscing on significant memories that linger, carefully considering the seemingly little moments that, only upon reflection, have an enormous impact on us.

Penn Engineering launches first Ivy League undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence

The new degree will push the limits on ai’s potential and prepare students to lead the use of this world-changing technology..

The University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science today announced the launch of a  Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence (AI) degree, the first undergraduate major of its kind among Ivy League universities and one of the very first AI undergraduate engineering programs in the U.S.

The rapid rise of generative AI is transforming virtually every aspect of life: health, energy, transportation, robotics, computer vision, commerce, learning, and even national security. This produces an urgent need for innovative, leading-edge AI engineers who understand the principles of AI and how to apply them in a responsible and ethical way.

“Inventive at its core, Penn excels at the cutting edge,” says Interim President J. Larry Jameson . “Data, including AI, is a critical area of focus for our strategic framework, In Principle and Practice, and this new degree program represents a leap forward for the Penn engineers who will lead in developing and deploying these powerful technologies in service to humanity. We are deeply grateful to Raj and Neera Singh, whose leadership helps make this possible.”

The Raj and Neera Singh Program in Artificial Intelligence equips students to unlock AI’s potential to benefit our society. Students in the program will be empowered to develop responsible AI tools that can harness the full knowledge available on the internet, provide superhuman attention to detail, and augment humans in making transformative scientific discoveries, researching materials for chips of the future, creating breakthroughs in health care through new antibiotics, applying lifesaving treatments, and accelerating knowledge and creativity.

Raj and Neera Singh are visionaries in technology and a constant force for innovation through their philanthropy. Their generosity graciously provides funding to support leadership, faculty, and infrastructure for the new program.

Preparing the next generation of AI engineers

The curriculum offers high-level coursework in topics including machine learning, computing algorithms, data analytics, and advanced robotics.

“The timing of this new undergraduate program comes as AI poses one of the most promising yet challenging opportunities the world currently faces,” says Vijay Kumar , Nemirovsky Family Dean of Penn Engineering. “Thanks to the generosity of Raj and Neera Singh to Penn Engineering’s B.S.E. in Artificial Intelligence program, we are preparing the next generation of engineers to create a society where AI isn’t just a tool, but a fundamental force for good to advance society in ways previously unimaginable.”

Leading the program will be George J. Pappas , UPS Foundation Professor of Transportation at Penn Engineering. “Realizing the potential of AI for positive social impact stands as one of the paramount challenges confronting engineering,” says Pappas, a 2024 National Academy of Engineering inductee. “We are excited to introduce a cutting-edge curriculum poised to train our students as leaders and innovators in the ongoing AI revolution.”

Ivy League coursework equipping students for the future

The new program’s courses will be taught by world-renowned faculty in the setting of Amy Gutmann Hall, Penn Engineering’s newest building. A hub for data science on campus and for the Philadelphia community when it officially opens this year, the state-of-the-art facilities in Amy Gutmann Hall will further transform the University’s capabilities in engineering education, research, and innovation as Penn Engineering advances the development of artificial intelligence.

“We are training students for jobs that don’t yet exist in fields that may be completely new or revolutionized by the time they graduate,” says Robert Ghrist , associate dean of Undergraduate Education in Penn Engineering and the Andrea Mitchell University Professor. “In my decades of teaching, this is one of the most exciting educational opportunities I’ve ever seen, and I can’t wait to work with these amazing students.”

The new B.S.E in Artificial Intelligence program will begin in fall 2024, with applications for existing University of Pennsylvania students who would like to transfer into the 2024 cohort available this fall. Fall 2025 applications for all prospective students will be made available in fall 2024.

Baseball Opens 2024 in Arlington

• Oklahoma opens the 2024 season at Globe Life Field this weekend in Arlington, Texas, as the Sooners take part in the fourth annual Shriners Children's College Showdown presented by Kubota. The Sooners will meet Oregon for the season opener Friday at 3 p.m. CT before a matchup vs. No. 9/8/8/5/11 Tennessee at 7 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. matchup vs. Nebraska on Sunday to close the weekend.

• All of the weekend action will be streamed via FloBaseball (subscription required). 

• The games will be broadcast locally on Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF. OU play-by-play announcer Toby Rowland will handle radio duties Friday and Sunday, while Josh Helmer will call Saturday's game. Ross Hubbard will serve as the color analyst for all three matchups.

• Oklahoma is playing four games in five days to begin the 2024 season. Following this weekend's three-game set at Globe Life Field, the Sooners will play at Dallas Baptist Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, OU will play eight games over the next 10 days, opening the home slate next weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park with a four-game series vs. Wright State.

• Oklahoma is in its seventh season under the direction of head coach Skip Johnson (including the 2020 season that was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson, who spent the 2017 season on staff as an assistant coach, has led the Sooners to a 189-132 record, three NCAA Tournament appearances, the 2022 Big 12 tournament championship and the 2022 College World Series finals since taking over as head coach prior to the 2018 season. 

• The Sooners return 13 letterwinners from the 2023 squad and brought in 26 newcomers for the 2024 season. 

• Oklahoma finished the 2023 season by making its 40th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, playing in the NCAA Charlottesville Regional.

•  Oregon : The Sooners and Ducks will meet for just the second time in program history on Friday. The first meeting between the schools came in 2012, a 3-2 OU victory in Eugene, Ore. 

•  Tennessee : OU leads the all-time series over the Vols, 2-1. The first matchup between the teams was monumental in the history of Oklahoma baseball as the Sooners beat the Volunteers in the 1951 College World Series finals to claim the program's first national title. The second meeting between the schools came in 2008 in Houston, a 2-0 Oklahoma win. Most recently, Tennessee took a 8-0 victory over the Sooners in 2022 at the Shriners Children's College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston. 

•  Nebraska : Former conference foes meet Sunday morning as the Sooners and Huskers history goes back to their first meetings in 1962. OU leads the all-time series 117-94-1. Sunday's matchup will be the first between the teams since a two-game series in Norman in 2011 that saw the Sooners sweep the Huskers, 9-2 and 4-1.


• Since 1962, Oklahoma is 41-21 on opening day and is 11-4 in its last 15 season openers. The Sooners are 30-4 in home season openers since 1962, including a 26-3 mark at L. Dale Mitchell Park, which opened in 1982.  

• This is the fourth time in Skip Johnson 's tenure as head coach (since 2018) the Sooners will open the season at a neutral site. OU is 2-1 in such openers: won 6-3 vs. Indiana at Conway, S.C. in 2018; lost 6-0 vs. Virginia at Pensacola, Fla., in 2020; won 3-0 vs. Auburn at Arlington, Texas in 2022.


• Transfer junior left-hander Braden Davis will start on the mound for the Sooners to open the 20234season. He will be just the second left-handed pitcher in the last 10 seasons to start opening day for OU.

• This is the sixth straight season in which Oklahoma will play at least one game in a Major League Ballpark. OU will play in this weekend's Shriners Children's College Showdown, and in the Big 12 Championship at the Texas Rangers' ballpark again later this season. The Sooners played four games at Globe Life Field in 2023 after a program-high 16 games in big league ballparks in 2022 — the State Farm College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field (Feb. 18-20), a three-game set vs. Northwestern State at Globe Life Field (Feb. 25-27), the Shriners Children's College Classic at the Houston Astros' Minute Maid Park (March 4-6), a series against Texas at Globe Life Field (April 1-3) and the Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field. The Sooners played two games at Globe Life Field in 2021, three at Minute Maid Park in 2020 (Shriners College Classic) and one contest against Minnesota at Target Field in Minneapolis (2019). 

• Since 2019, OU is a combined 14-12 in games played at MLB ballparks (11-8 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, 2-4 at Minute Maid Park in Houston and 1-0 at Target Field in Minneapolis). The Sooners were 9-7 in games played at Major League ballparks in 2022 (9-4 at Globe Life Field, 0-3 at Minute Maid Park).


• Senior outfielder Bryce Madron  was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 baseball team

• Madron, who earned honorable mention All-Big 12 last season, played in all 60 games and batted .320 with team highs of 12 home runs, 15 doubles, 51 RBIs, 58 runs scored and 61 walks. The former junior college transfer also led the squad with his .580 slugging percentage and .476 on-base percentage. He added three triples and 16 stolen bases while notching 70 hits.

• The Blanchard, Okla., product paced the Sooners with 21 multiple-hit games and registered multiple RBIs in 10 contests. In his last 40 games of the 2023 campaign, Madron hit .379 while recording 58 hits, 43 RBIs, 10 home runs, 12 doubles and 41 runs. He ended the season by reaching base in 20 consecutive contests.

• The Sooners registered 114 stolen bases in 148 attempts (77%) last season. In 2022, OU registered 145 steals, the most by an Oklahoma club since 1989 (168 steals). 2023 marked the first time since the 1985 through '89 seasons OU has totaled at least 100 steals in consecutive campaigns. 

•  John Spikerman and Anthony Mackenzie led OU and ranked in the top 10 in the Big 12 with their 27 and 21 steals, respectively. Kendall Pettis (17 steals) and Bryce Madron (15 steals) also had double-digit bags. Twelve players stole at least one base last season, five players had at least nine steals and nine players notched at least four stolen bases. 

• On 12 occasions, an OU player stole at least two bases in a game. Oklahoma registered a season-high eight steals against Rider on Feb. 25 and stole at least three bases in 17 games last season. 

• OU's recent mantra '#CHAOUS' is not only about just stealing bases, but also about being aggressive on offense and putting pressure on the defense. While Oklahoma ranked 19th nationally in steals (114) and 26th in steals per game (1.9), it also ranked 11th nationally in walks (350) and batters have been hit by a pitch 74 times. The Sooners also have 24 sacrifice bunts and 39 sacrifice flies (which ranked T6th in the country). OU opponents committed 65 errors (.971 fielding percentage).


• The Sooners return plenty of production, including key pieces in Jackson Nicklaus (INF, Jr.), Kendall Pettis (OF, R-Sr.) and John Spikerman (OF, Jr.) that were a part of the team's 2022 CWS run, along with 2023 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention outfielder Bryce Madron .

• In addition to the veteran leadership, Oklahoma returns Anthony Mackenzie (INF, Sr.) Easton Carmichael (C, So.), Rocco Garza-Gongora (INF/OF, So.) and Patrick Engskov (IF, So.) who all have starting experience from a season ago.

• HC Skip Johnson and staff hit the portal hard this offseason to add a plethora of talent across the field and in the bullpen for 2024. 

• There is significant buzz around true freshman Jaxon Willits , son of assistant coach and OU alum Reggie Willits , who looks to bring power at the plate and take over at shortstop for the Sooners following the departure of Dakota Harris to the MLB Draft in 2023.

• Big-hitter transfers in 6-4, 227 pound Carter Frederick (Snead State College) and fifth-year senior Michael Snyder (Washington) are primed to add more power numbers to the Sooners already dynamic lineup.

• OU's starting rotation will feature plenty of fresh faces in 2024 as the only returning weekend starter from a season ago is senior LHP James Hitt . Transfer lefty from Sam Houston State, Braden Davis , gets the opening day nod this weekend prior to transfer righty Brendan Girton from Texas Tech getting the ball on Saturday. 

• Plenty other names will look to rise to the occasion including JUCO second-year right-handed senior Will Carsten , true freshman righty Jacob Gholston , a pair of Wichita State transfers in LHP Jace Miner and RHP Austin Henry , as well as transfer sophomore twins from NW Florida State College, Kyson and Malachi Witherspoon .

• Left-hander  Carter Campbell returns to lead the bullpen arms, as well as Carson Atwood and Jett Lodes , among others.


• The Oklahoma baseball facility enhancement project will transform the look of the ballpark from both the interior bowl and the exterior of the stadium. New locker rooms, training areas, coaches offices and team meeting areas combined with chairback seating, terraced berms and additional awnings and concourses will provide a first-class facility for fans and student-athletes. In addition, a new, state-of-the-art performance and player development center will be added. A new entry to the team areas will include a Champions Lobby, displaying the success and tradition of the Oklahoma baseball program. 

• More than 35,000 in square-foot-space of new areas benefiting student-athlete performance and recovery including a robust medical services area, weight room and sports science to centralize student-athlete training at the baseball field.
