Nowadays, social networking websites are popular among teenagers, and parents are required to guide them on the right way of using it since it can be harmful if used wrongly. The negative impacts of social networks on teenagers are as follow. Whenever you go through someone’s profile on Facebook it is filled with happiness. A quality time with family hanging out with friends traveling blogs several parties and the list go on. What we could see is their happiness on social media and not the offline life behind it. Those people portray the greatest part of their life on social media. Whenever we look at those profiles we get an impression that they are better than us. Low self-esteem begins after spending an hour on Facebook. We become aggressive for not achieving or possessing a life like them. Some teenagers do not update a post themselves but compare their life with other random strangers they see on social media. The result is that they see a negative about them and become dissatisfied with their current life.
Checking likes and viewers have become more exciting than checking homework and assignment. Receiving the messages from social media friends become their happiness instead of initiating a conversation in real life. Comparison is about envying others capability that we wish we could be like them. People may be showing their best life online and hiding the reality behind it. Comparison sometimes may bring the motivations to your life but it is just for a few minutes. Indeed the comparison can grow the negativity in our life. We ignore the fact that what other people could do might be against our ability. In comparison we do not appreciate our own qualities and our values instead we disgrace ourselves for not being the person they are. The comparison makes us blind which means we are not seeing our abilities anymore. We lost self-love while comparing ourselves to other people who we think is better. Not achieving things we desire in our life could bring nothing but dissatisfaction. We have missed other important things while demanding the things that are not possible to get. Parents with teenagers are likely to receive more demands from their kids. In this stage of life comparison is too high for them. they want everything they see even if it is useless for them. We compare because we do not appreciate what we have and we are not enough with what we have. A person with the mind of comparison they will never be enough for what they have and instead, they will ask for more even if they are rewarded with the most expensive stuffs. Teens tend to design their life on social media platforms and they invest their life in there.
The most active person in social media are teenagers. They like updating posts on social media and wait for feedback or comments from the viewer. Editing the caption million times before and after they update a post checking the viewers after every ten minutes and replying to the comments have become their daily habits. They cant even stay for one day without updating status and if there are no viewers they started earning whatever they can to receive views and likes. Some cut their skin or hurt their body and some even go on live doing harmful activities which can even lead to suicide. These behaviors are for nothing but to become famous. They have wasted their time on checking the viewers likes and comments meanwhile they miss other important things to do in their life.

It’s easy to think we know someone we follow on social media, right? We see posts with friends and with family. We see status updates about their dog. We see where they spent their Friday night. We see what they had for brunch last weekend. But, though many people want to believe they know about someone’s life from meaningless Internet posts, we honestly know nothing about someone we follow on social media.
We don’t really know who they are and how they feel. We don’t know where they came from and what they’ve seen. We can’t know someone’s past experiences through a computer screen—how he or she felt in that fleeting moment. Just because a person has a large social media following doesn’t mean he or she is happy. It doesn’t mean that person feels appreciated or loved. You could have over a million followers on Instagram, but who is it that you call when you leave the library on a rainy Friday night?
It’s interesting to see where the line between a person’s personal life and his or her life on the Internet is drawn—what he or she chooses to share with those outside of his or her personal life. What people who are obsessed with social media fail to realize is that when you turn off your device and look around, there you find the people who play an important role in your life. It’s easy to forget about the world around us when we are tapped into our cell phone or computer. But what happens if you lose service? What happens when there is no Wi-Fi and no cellular reception?
When you are a child, you don’t have a social media account. You don’t have a false perception of yourself or an image to live up to. You don’t feel compelled to share pictures of you and your friends with other people instead of truly being present in that moment with them. You create meaningful and lasting relationships instead of relationships with very shallow origins. Social media has created a second world in its own right with access to billions of people—a world where we can escape the frustration of small town living and familiar faces. However, we shouldn’t perceive social media as a zero-sum game. We shouldn’t give ourselves over to social media entirely.

If you don't know a thing about Goldens, you at least know how beautiful they are. Their shiny, long-haired coat is a distinct trait that ranges from a very white, cream color all the way to deep red. Their dark noses, fluffy ears, and deep brown eyes make them a sight to fall in love with.
2. They are extremely gentle.
It is a true fact that a Golden Retriever can hold an egg in its mouth without breaking it. Their nurturing nature and calm demeanor is a very comforting quality that makes Goldens a joy to be around.
3. Goldens are very easy to train.
While they may be stubborn dogs , they are incredibly easy to train. This is mostly because they are people pleasers at heart ! (And they'll do anything to earn themselves a little treat for being a good doggy!)
4. They love to cuddle!

Faith can be a tricky thing. “Do I really believe in this? I can’t see God. Is He really there?” These thoughts pass through everyone’s minds at least one point in time. Faith is a huge jump. I think it’s easier to say we all get a little fearful in life. Not everything goes as planned and it shakes us up. But it’s important to remember who we’re living for and why. If we’re too afraid to do what God has commanded us to do, we might not get to this place where He needs us to be. He won’t fail us. He won’t leave us. Instead of focusing on fear, try to focus on trusting Him. I know it’s hard, but trusting Him brings us one step closer to Him and where we need to be. And in the end, it will lead to a remarkable gift.

God will never leave us nor forsake us. He is there for us in every little moment of every day. He cares for us and loves us and wants us. It’s always difficult to sit still and let God do His work, especially in a really tough time where we think we can handle things. But the truth is, we can’t. Not without Him.

This is an amazing reminder to be still and trust in God. He has blessed us and sometimes we take it for granted without realizing it. We need to trust that He will fulfill the promises He has given us. If we take a step back and look at the whole picture, we will realize He has been there for every little thing. He is there and wants us to hear Him. If we believe with all our heart that God will forever and always be there for us, then we will be able to trust Him. What is a better gift there than God? Let go and let God.

We all grow weak and weary. We need rest and faith that whatever we are going through, God will guide us. When we’re overwhelmed, it’s easy to shut our emotions off. But instead, we should give it to God. That doesn’t mean give it to Him and forget about it and think it is no longer our problem. Give it to Him and continually pray for it. Ask Him to guide us to that rock and help us defeat this trial.

It is easy to worry and focus on the things going wrong rather than the things going right. When we worry, we are draining ourselves, leaving us tired and weary. And that is exactly what the devil wants. He whispers in our ears all the negative aspects of a day, which can easily lead to anxiety and worry. Be strong and try to focus on the positive things. It’s better to focus on at least one positive thought amongst a thousand negative ones instead of focusing wholly on the negative.

Faith is built on trust and love, even if we can’t see anything. In some cases, we might not think God is there simply because we can’t see Him. But He is there. It means we are taking a leap into this world, His world, even if we don’t know all the information. It’s okay to doubt sometimes, just as long as it doesn’t keep you from believing in our Savior. It is interesting that, the more people get involved with social media, the more they seem to think of it as literal. That is, even as people understand the virtual nature of the interactions and the friendships, these elements themselves take on a more “real” quality as the involvement goes on. What occurs is that there is a sense of social media activity as almost identical to literal socializing, in terms of the value attached to it. This is understandable but removed from reality itself. While there are definite similarities between social media and real life social activity, the differences are so important, it is not rational to think of the two as essentially the same.
On a basic level, there is no denying that social media is attractive for people for the same reasons they interact in real life. Humans are social animals and we usually enjoy sharing experiences with others, maintaining friendships, and making new ones. All of this is offered by social media, with the added advantage of access to others not possible in real life. For many users, this is then an expansion of a behavior they rely upon, as the media “brings everyone together” in a sense. Just as a person will enjoy a large party, so too will they enjoy mixing with so many others in this casual venue. This similarity is perhaps the strongest between the two activities, simply because it is all about socializing. If social media has an even greater attraction, then, and one going to people actually favoring it over real life interactions, it is likely due to the greatly expanded access to others offered by the media.

At the same time, there are differences that are important, and go to why social media is inherently removed from literal socializing. Once again, the factor of distance provided by the virtual essence of the media brings a quality not necessarily present in literal socializing. In real life, the person who only observes is unusual, and is actually defying socializing; with the “shield” of the social media in place, they may be invisible and take in everything presented from the safety of non-commitment. When people indicate that social media is much the same for them as real life, then, they are forgetting how it allows them to create as much distance as they like, and only observe the activity of their friends.
The immense popularity of social media makes perfect sense. It is a remarkably wide arena in which people may connect in any number of ways, so it is very easy to think of it as nearly identical to real life socializing. This is not a valid perception, however, simply because it ignores the enormous quality of social media as virtual, and consequently offering opportunities for control not possible in real life. Just as users are enabled to more freely express themselves in the media, so too may they log in only to observe and be entertained, and life is not that accommodating. Ultimately, then, there are definite similarities between social media and real life socializing, but the differences are so important, the two cannot be reasonably viewed as being the same.

Toys were a luxury, so spending the day making up games was normal. They brag about playing outside all day when they were kids, and it’s their badge of honor to tell stories of how their parents had no idea where they were until it was dark.
But for kids today, they’ve never known life before the internet, life before Facebook and Twitter, or life before these snappy chatter apps. The generation growing up now has never known social life without screens.
Social Media vs. Reality: Which is Better?
Let’s get this argument about which is better — a pre-social media or a post-social media society — out of the way and admit we can’t answer this question.
Yes, it was better for our eyes when we weren’t spending so much time in front of screens. But technology has also brought us a level of productivity and education never before realized in the history of the world. (And we all have quick access to that history now, thanks to Google!)
At the very least, it has allowed for a larger (and quicker) distribution of information. We cannot say we are not informed. The information coming at us may be about some celebrity activity, or it might be the most recent natural disaster.1 The reality is, because of the expedient nature of social media, we can respond in real-time to things happening around the world.
In addition, with three billion people using social media2, the influence one person can attain has never been bigger. One immediate benefit is the unlimited potential scope of our influence — our reach is exponentially larger now. Plus, social media enables us to keep in touch with and make friends all over the world!
Like everything else in life, social media has its downsides as well. For example, do we trust the sources giving us the information? Is there potential to become addicted to ever-increasing screen time? And perhaps the reason why you’re reading this blog — does social media alter one’s understanding of reality?
Let’s explore how social media distorts reality and our perception of it.
Social Media Perception vs. Reality
For anyone that has spent any amount of time scrolling through social media, it is no secret that it can foster a sense of discontentment, insecurity, or even depression. When we see others accomplishing more than us, it can breed low self-esteem or even a lack of self-worth.
We have an opportunity to rejoice in the good happening among our friends and peers, but if we stack their glossy world on social media vs. reality as we know it, discouragement can follow. In fact, one study found 6.7% of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from depression.3
The real challenge comes when we become envious of everything our friends appear to be doing. We compare their online world with our offline world and we often feel we don’t measure up. Of course, we forget that we ourselves will only post the bright spots of our day, so we find ourselves comparing the best of our friend’s lives to the worst of our own. No wonder the majority of Facebook users tend to have lower self-esteem.4 We need to be reminded that our friends are likely comparing their struggles to our bright spots as well.
Another study revealed that it might not be how we compare ourselves to others. Instead, it could be how our own posts perform on social media vs. our expectations for how they should perform.4 We anguish over the number of likes our posts receive, and we let our online engagement define our self-worth. We realize we can’t be other people, but often times, we agonize over not being a better version of ourselves.
Harnessing the Social Media vs. Reality Conversation for God’s Glory
So what are we to do with all this information? The internet will not suddenly close up shop and cease to exist. To hope it might is to shelter ourselves from all the perks that come with it.
But isn’t this where thoughtful Christians have found themselves in every generation? Technology forges ahead and we must adapt. To do so without thought will mean giving up a part of who we should be.
So what are earnest Christians to do with the social media vs. reality conversation?
We should seek to be truth and light in whatever relevant outlet we find ourselves in. For the Apostle Paul, it was a Roman jail cell. For us, it might be the 280-character confines of Twitter.
As Christians, we need to have a holistic view of social media vs. reality, understanding that every tool at our disposal has the potential to use us. We must realize that social media can be a dark shadow, but we have been called to be light. If the Great Commission applies to us today just as much as it did the first-century Christians, then it should apply to the social media realm as well.
The need for Christ-focused and biblically-grounded people in all spheres of influence is why Grace College exists.

Are You the Same Person on Social Media as You Are in Real Life?

Do you ever suspect people are posting images on social media that show them in a one-dimensional way, to make others think they are perfect, with a perfect life?
Is your social media presence an accurate depiction of who you are in real life?
Talk with a classmate about social media personas, for famous people and for ordinary citizens, and how those personas are crafted and presented online.
In “ My So-Called (Instagram) Life ,” Clara Dollar writes:
“You’re like a cartoon character,” he said. “Always wearing the same thing every day.” He meant it as an intimate observation, the kind you can make only after spending a lot of time getting to know each other. You flip your hair to the right. You only eat ice cream out of mugs. You always wear a black leather jacket. I know you. And he did know me. Rather, he knew the caricature of me that I had created and meticulously cultivated. The me I broadcast to the world on Instagram and Facebook. The witty, creative me, always detached and never cheesy or needy. That version of me got her start online as my social media persona, but over time (and I suppose for the sake of consistency), she bled off the screen and overtook my real-life personality, too. And once you master what is essentially an onstage performance of yourself, it can be hard to break character. There was a time when I allowed myself to be more than what could fit onto a 2-by-4-inch screen. When I wasn’t so self-conscious about how I was seen. When I embraced my contradictions and desires with less fear of embarrassment or rejection. There was a time when I swore in front of my friends and said grace in front of my grandmother. When I wore lipstick after seeing “Clueless,” and sneakers after seeing “Remember the Titans.” When I flipped my hair every way, ate ice cream out of anything, and wore coats of all types and colors. Since then, I have consolidated that variety — scrubbed it away, really — to emerge as one consistently cool girl: one face, two arms, one black leather jacket.

The Difference Between Your Life On Social Media And Your Reality

So often are we caught comparing our lives in their chaotic entirety to the sliver of beauty shown by other people via social media. We’re so disconnected from real life, constantly chasing some made up perfection because that’s all we see when we’re browsing the internet. We hide our mess, and we show our best. Everyone wants people to think they’re happy, things are going well, and that life is good all the time. I can’t say I blame anyone- no one likes to show off the ugly side of life. But that’s just not the truth. That’s not real. And how deceiving is it to try and convince people that it is? With social media having such a huge role in connecting us to so many people, it’s understandable that many may not want to share everything. But at the same time, it’s hard to put your own life together and figure out who you are and what’s right, and what’s wrong, all while being stuck with thoughts like “why can’t I be like that?” – when you have so many different influences at your finger tips shouting perfection at you from so many different outlets. It makes you feel so inadequate!
It’s just one of those things, one of those “cons”, to the whole social media movement that we all just need to be aware of. Every human being has bad days. If their social media implies otherwise, they’re lying.
For example, I posted a photo once that sort of implied that I had a productivity morning. I got up, made my tea, I got (sort of) dressed, I even took a picture. But, that’s hardly what happened. I got up late because I didn’t have to go into work until that afternoon. I put a little makeup on and I brushed my hair, but I didn’t even change out of my pajama pants. I hadn’t walked through half my house. I only left bed to make tea, get yogurt, brush my hair, and put a different shirt on. I was not having a productive morning! And the crop job I did on that photo? (1) to hide my legs because I was self-conscious about them, and (2) to hide the horror of a mess on our night stand. That’s not very exciting stuff and it makes me look bad. So we just omit those parts, leaving things to look much better than they really are.
Will I continue to do this? Probably. Because I like my life to be aesthetically pleasing across my blog and social medias. But I’m not afraid to tell you what it really is. I’m not ashamed of what my life really is. I don’t want to show off my mess, obviously, but I’m not reluctant to tell people that I don’t have it all together. I probably never will, and I embrace that about myself.
What people show online is not everything. Just because someone shows off all their yummy and healthy meals via Instagram and Snapchat doesn’t mean she didn’t eat ice cream on two separate occasions that day because she was grumpy! (ahem. That totally wasn’t ever me….) The girl who runs a super cute fashion blog does not dress that way all the time! She DOES own sweatpants! But for a fashion blog, I mean, obviously you’d never see her in them unless you knew her personally.
Real life is real life for everyone, across the board. We all have our own struggles, we all have a sink full of dishes, we all go two or three days without changing out of our comfy pants- it’s fine. If someone chooses to only show off the highlights of their life, that’s their prerogative. Just know that it isn’t the whole story.

Social media use across platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.) has increased drastically in the last decade. Humans are intrinsically social creatures, so the opportunities for connection offered by social media have made it especially popular. Connecting with others and scrolling through posted content are two of the primary uses of social media.
Researchers are starting to better understand when and how it helps mental health and connectedness, as well as when and how it hurts these areas of life. One of the primary discoveries is the role that social comparison plays in our social media experience. The tendency to compare ourselves to others is natural, but in this case, having the tendency to notice people on social media who we judge (subconsciously or even unconsciously) as being better than us in key ways, often has a negative mental and emotional health impact.
As social media sites update, they become more interactive and more “addicting,” and the opportunity for social comparison increases. This can also increase the potential fallout: depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem, poor body image, and disordered eating . Although perhaps unconnected, it is worth noting that concerning mental health trends (e.g. depression, anxiety, body image issues), in youth worsened during the same period of time that teen smartphone and social media use increased. Establishing clear links between social media use and larger mental health trends is challenging for many reasons, it is quite clear that engaging in a lot of negative social comparison is likely a part of these trends.
This is because creating a false life on social media for the sake of likes/followers can make our shortcomings or struggles in real life seem all the more difficult and we lose sight of what’s real. Even brief exposure to social media can trigger social comparison, and s elf-evaluations were lower when people viewed profiles of healthy or successful people.
Negative social comparison or the fear of missing out (FOMO)—the worry that someone else is having a better time or is more successful than you—can impact our mental health in a variety of ways:
- Increased depression: Feeling envy and down on ourselves because of what others post on social media is associated with worsening depression .
- Decreased overall well-being: People who are heavy users of social media (upwards of 5 hours a day) have been shown to have a lower sense of self, suffer from depression and even have thoughts of suicide.
- Poor body image: A crucial factor in self-esteem, especially in adolescent development, negative self-comparison is a common phenomenon for both men and women on social media. While the idealized standards for men and women’s bodies are different, both are vulnerable to poor body-image and low self-esteem. This is true online as well with the growing rise in cyberbullying .
- Eating disorders: More time on social media is also associated with the desire to change one’s body through disordered eating habits . One pervasive manifestation is the diet tea craze and other restrictive “cleanses”, commonly promoted by influencers with idealized body types and moreover, body types that have often been distorted or edited for social media.
While people of any age can be affected by social comparison on social media, adolescents (13 – 18) and young adults (19-24) are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects. The main reason for this is how social media affects the forming of our identity. Our identity is formed by creating one that’s unique and “stands out”, while also creating one that fits in with a social group and allows us to feel like we belong.
Social media plays to both parts. The profile we create is made up of the parts of our identity we like best and want to present to the world, while the feedback we get in terms of likes, friends, and interaction feeds our need for belonging and acceptance .
Gender and social media comparison
More research is needed to determine if females are truly more affected by social media than males, but currently we know that girls are more likely to have lower well-being due to social media usage. This could be for a number of reasons, but the targeting of beauty related ads, the growing popularity of “fitspiration”/ “thinspiration” accounts, and of course the mass adoption of filters that constantly present idealized and unrealistic images are all ingredients. Not to mention the prevalence of cyberbullying, especially among young girls. If you’re the victim of cyberbullying, or know someone who is, there are ways to cope .
In all of these studies, the worst outcomes in terms of negative feelings were associated with more time spent on social media apps. So in order to minimize social comparison, the best thing and quickest thing you can do is to limit your time there. A few other things you can do are:
- Be aware of your triggers: Notice which posts make you feel down on yourself and start the comparison trap. Consider unfollowing those people.
- Remember it’s not real: Don’t compare someone’s outside to your inside. These posts are designed for attention, they aren’t real life.
- Practice gratitude: Try to focus on what you do have in your life vs. what you don’t. It can be small, but acknowledging what you do have can be really helpful in minimizing comparison.
- Limit social media use: Make use of apps that help you limit your time spent on particular platforms by setting a daily limit or times during the day when you can’t access social media from your phone.
- Focus on the positive: Try to follow people and view posts that inspire you, rather than those who leave you feeling negative about yourself or others.
How to help a friend who’s socially comparing
If you see a friend fixating on their likes or friend count, experiencing cyberbullying, or trying detoxes or other disordered eating habits to “look like” their favorite influencer, it’s important to speak up. By making sure they know how important your friendship is outside of social media, and the importance of their physical and emotional health, you let them know that their worth extends offline. You can also share what you’ve learned here and encourage them to structure their social media use in ways that support, rather than challenge, their mental health.
Social media by itself isn’t the cause of these issues. Low self-esteem, poor body image, and being vulnerable to mental illness often make people more likely to seek out validation and community through social media. As we said earlier, positive interactions and self-expression through social media are beneficial. However, predatory advertisements (e.g. “thinspiration” and detox programs), idealized lives from influencers, and cyberbullying are the main culprits within social media that lead to comparison and negative outcomes: increased depression, anxiety, disordered eating, suicidal thoughts, etc.
If you or someone you know just can’t kick your social media habits despite it making you feel worse, or is struggling with your mental health separate from social media, the most important thing you can do is ask for help or get them help . Depression , anxiety , disordered eating , and suicidal thoughts should never go ignored.

For those who experienced it, it’s a complex process and has a huge impact on our mental health and happiness . In every stage of our lives such as childhood, adolescents, and adulthood we strive for that interactive bond making us secure and wanted.
Nowadays there are different forms of friendship including the most popular – social media friends . Real-life friends are the opposite of social media friends yet they have some things in common.
Social media friendships, for example, are built online and rely on communication tools such as social network sites, stable internet connections, and smart technology. The nature of these relationships is virtual and lacks the intimate, personal, and emotional connection of real-life friendship made offline.
However, some would argue that hanging out with an online friend can be just as meaningful, supportive, and enjoyable as meeting a friend in person.

Friends in person, on the other hand, allow you to experience a person fully and determine whether or not they are worth your time.
Real-life friends are the type of people you hang out with in real life. They keep you company whenever they can if they are not busy doing something else. Nowadays we live a fast life and not everyone has the time to do a lot of things in a day including seeing many people.
In offline friendships, you are face to face with a person and you can talk about different subjects such as the most important thing called private life and the difficulties one person has in some period of their time. You can also make plans like going to your favorite restaurant or on a picnic and maintain a meaningful relationship.
The difference between social media friends and real-life ones is that online friends know all about your relationship drama because you ask for advice just about that kind of superficial stuff. Friends online are not here to support you and walk with you through the ups and downs of life.
The real-life friend knows you best and they are in the right position to tell you the truth even if it’s hurtful sometimes.
The main reason why we chose social media friends over real-life friends
Do social media friends qualify as real friendships? So far we came to a similar interpretation that online friends are easier to make.
In the digital world, there is a variety of digital platforms where a person can interact with another. The opposite of that is real friends aren’t easy to make especially in this modern world. We come to a point where we as people are afraid of being judged by other people .
Online friends are the perfect ‘friends’ for kids who live in isolated areas, kids with disabilities, or social anxiety. That online environment provides interaction with minimal risk. That’s why we choose to be protected by our computer screens and not go face-to-face.
Another reason we prefer online friendships is that they require significantly less effort, responsibility, and work to be nurtured.
Contrary to the commitment and responsibility required by our closest friends, online friendships are not as demanding and any small inconvenience can be solved under the excuse that the internet connection was interrupted.
The internet provides the opportunity to create a friendship in the blink of an eye but at the same time, there is the security of the block button if things are going in the wrong direction.
Social networks serve as a buffer against inappropriate situations and conflicts that appear between people who interact online. All this seems so convenient but also it takes away the people skills that they need in real life.
Face-to-face interactions and resolving conflicts in person are more respectful, plus watching someone’s body language and facial expressions will help you avoid misinterpretations that could lead to bigger conflicts.
The danger of social media friends
Of every good story, there is a bad side, and social connections made online can be a bit dangerous. Making social media friends has its disadvantages.
When a person is talking with someone online, they get more comfortable, and with that loosens you can accidentally reveal information about some personal things that might put you in a dangerous position. In other words, online connections can make you feel vulnerable and possibly say and do things that you wouldn’t normally do.
In virtual friends, there is someone to hack us or stalk us to gain something out. The second dangerous thing is more physical.
If internet communication is getting very frequent we become socially isolated and mentally unavailable not only for making real-life friends but also can affect our daily lifestyle outside the screens. This is one of the many toxic effects of social media .
People with whom you have built meaningful friendships would never put you in dangerous situations.
Having these examples we can conclude that in some certain way having online friends is dangerous and we need to be careful but on the other hand, we have the power to decide with whom we will interact online.
The Pros and Cons of having an online friend

Face-to-face connections are still very important. Nothing beats having a real friend and knowing that someone is always there for you no matter what. The feeling that you can trust someone is irreplaceable and we all need that social support . There are numerous reasons why real friendships are still important, but we will only mention a few of them just as a reminder:
- Real-life friendships create much profound bonds between two or more people
- Friends function as a support system building intimacy and trust
- It’s better to have a few real friends than hundreds of social media friends who might not be there for you and could disappear
- Friends keep us active and are able to advise us
- A real friendship needs to maintain making us feel involved and part of something bigger
- Time with friends influences our confidence and increases happiness
Some people don’t know the value of a real friend. Maybe they don’t want to have one or just can’t make one. Either way you need to try even if sometimes the whole process seems difficult because, in the end, you will come to a realization that it was worth it.
Conclusion – Are online friends real friends?
Despite the negative side of having social media friends, we need to accept the fact that they have their place in some people’s lives in this modern era. But still, that kind of friendship doesn’t provide people with the social, emotional or physical learning and development they need.
Nowadays parents need to be encouraging their kids from a younger age to be developing and foster friendships in the real world for a better and healthier lifestyle. Many people would say that online friendships are transient and not as deep as real ones, other people would say the reverse, that sometimes you can be more open and honest when communicating with someone directly through social media.
We can make the conclusion that different people have different opinions and because of that there is no simple answer to the main question “Are social media friends as deep and meaningful as long-standing friendships in the real world?” Which, when you think about it, is just another form of communication and it’s your personal decision what is REAL for you.

We are the millennial generation who feeds on social media. Now it won’t be a lie if I presume that most of our lives start with looking at the screen of our phone and ends the same way . We have definitely met our love, best friend, or even got popular through social media. This is the new surge where the era of social media has taken over the entire population regardless the age.
But are you losing out on your real life because of your social media life? Have you been thinking that you might be addicted to your social media life? Well, the fact that made you think this in the first place may be an indicator that your social life is taking over your real life! But is it bad, can there be a balance? Let’s find out the fight between social media v/s real life , and which should win!
1. Social media v/s real life-Highlight reel edition:
But does it happen in real life ? Is no filter really an air quote ‘no filter’? These are the things one must ponder about because social media just shows the 1% of the life the person is living. It omits out 99% of the things which a person might be doing. The fight of social media v/s real life is all about who is ‘real’ and ‘fake’!
Most of the time people are trolled for being fake and the entire debate on real v/s fake sparks out. Social media is the highlight reel of a person’s life, it doesn’t mean that they must be doing the same thing every day, like going for Coachella or concerts, beach parties, clubs, etc. We often forget social media shows what they want us to see and not what the struggle of life really is!
2. Good and ugly
This is an ugly truth about the social media v/s real life where the feed tells a different story and your real life is the opposite. The ugly is always cropped out or Photoshopped , the good is emphasized to irrational proportions that it looks fake.

Creating an identity on social media is easy because you have the power in your hands to manipulate the way you look or what are your thoughts and motives. ‘ Catfishing ‘ is a big downside of social media and this leads to many eye-openers where one realizes how social media v/s real life can be very manipulating.
People are being cheated, robbed, and swindled on social media due to these fake identities which are being created to catfish people. But social media can also be a platform to create an identity to shine your hidden talents. Real-life identity should be the major chunk of your life rather than focusing on curating the identity of a fake persona. The choice is yours!
Social media has become a competition to get more followers and likes, which makes the user indulge in social media than real life. Studies show that being on social media has serious effects on real-life relationships . This is the ugly side of social media which no one accepts and realizes, one should be aware of the side effects of the numbers which affect real life too.
Social media v/s real life battle goes on when your mental health is also affected due to this number system. People are obsessed with the number system which causes psychological impacts which later on becomes a disorder in the later stage that might need medical assistance. So keep in mind to balance between social media and real-life!
Social media works in a way where the amount of likes, followers, richness, and elitism is shared. This is a cycle where you are tempted to live a life that other lives, but it may never be the truth. In real life, they might be struggling with loans and debts but on social media, they share only the trendiest and expensive items they recently bought. Social media is used only to portray what the world wants to see and the users fall for it.
Realizing the competition is not real and detaching oneself to focus on your real life is a big task that people often fail these days. The biggest trap is when you bite the bait of the social media game and fall into the series of buying the latest trend or trying to keep up with the ‘influencers’, you make yourself prey to financial instability. It’s better to keep a reality check, always!
6. Validation-reward system
The fight between social media v/s real life can be always tough especially when one works on the validation system. It’s not hard to guess that social media works on the validation system as each photo or video you upload makes you constantly validate yourself through the game of the number of likes and hearts. Each time you upload you look for more likes which in turn gives you satisfaction and happiness when you need confidence.
What is the negative part of this? Well, the answer is easy, when you go out of your way of your comfortable zone or use Photoshop and other methods to tweak your photo to look good, it creates a false identity that you are lead to believe. Eventually, when the reality hits you, you go into denial and self-loathing which is disastrous.
7. Social media v/s real life- Self-worth edition:
This is an ugly side effect of social media on your mental health as it questions your self-worth. People like to exaggerate the way of living on social media which is often fake and constructed by them to curate an identity but what it does is spark off a chain of self-doubt cycle to the viewers.
You always try to compare yourself with the other person on your screen. The comparison of your life, body, and many such sectors of your personal, as well as public life to the unrealistic madness on social media, is bound to harm your self-worth which ultimately leads to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and many such negative impacts on your life. Social media is sure a platform for people to share their memories and things which they want the world to know but not everything for sure? Right! It’s a trend to capture the moments at a concert, party, or any function of a sort but what we forget is that we miss the moment in capturing it on our devices or trying to capture the moment.
Many sensitive things shouldn’t be uploaded on social media yet people forget this delicate line. This might or may have ended you in trouble a few times in the past. The balance between social media v/s real life should be healthy so that your personal life shouldn’t be affected due to your social life!
Addiction to social media is a very serious thing that has lead to many studies on it. Scientists say that dopamine is released when you get a like or your followers increase. It sends a wave of satisfaction which is similar to when your brain is pumped with alcohol or intoxicants.
But the social media v/s real-life battle continues where you ignore the real-life appointments due to social media addiction. Right from the time you wake up to when you hit the bed, you are glued to capturing the moment on social media but what you don’t realize is that you are missing out on real-life due to that!

Social media has not only changed the way in which society communicates but has also changed the way in which we treat others and how we view ourselves. When we evaluate the most popular social media websites, we can see a pattern of behavior that many would find alarming.
On Facebook, we judge each other based on how many people have shared or liked our posts instead of our character. On Twitter, we find someone to be popular based on the number of favorites and re-tweets as opposed to their moral compass. The same can also be said for Snapchat, it is more important to have the highest number of views than actually have something important to say. Due to this fact, while teens think they are merely using social media to connect with others and create friendships, the dark side of the internet emerges.
In the dark side of the web lives cyberbullying, negative effects on self-esteem and less frequent face-to-face interactions. According to Merriam-Webster, cyberbullying is defined as “the verbal bullying of someone (as a classmate) through the use of often anonymous electronic communication (as online posts or text messages)” (Merriam-Webster). It is a common fact that teens encounter bullying in the real world, now in the digital world we live in, cyberbullying is rapidly increasing. Help Stop Teen and School Violence is a campaign to stop bullying and cyberbullying. The two statistics that illustrate the need to address the issue of cyberbullying are: “About 50 percent of teens and young adults from ages 14 to 24 have reported that they have experienced some form of digitally abusive behavior” and “About 45 percent of teens witness rude and mean behavior being said back and forth to one another on social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace.” (Cyberbullying Statistics).
Cyberbullying is dangerous. Unlike in school, cyberbullying can happen at anytime during the day, there is no escaping it. It is there in black in white, so to speak, for all of the virtual world to see, like, and comment on. The effects of cyberbullying on the target of the abuse can be low self-esteem, stress, depression, anxiety, and suicide ideation. The American Society for the Positive Care of Children (SPCC) states on their website that suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens (Teen Suicide & Prevention). They also state that according the Journal of the American Medical Association, that “kids who are bullied are more than twice as likely to consider suicide” (Teen Suicide & Prevention). The negative effects that cyberbullying has on teens doesn’t jump to suicide ideation. During a study from Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien, it was found that when we spend more time on social media sites, the more time we spend comparing ourselves to others, leading to depression (Newsome).
We often forget that what we see in the advertisements or from celebrities are staged, it does not reflect reality. Even when translating this to those we know on social media, they more often post pictures and blogs that are “the best versions of themselves” (Newsome). We do not consider the filters used or how many times they took that one picture, in order to portray a perfect image. The view just sees the images and posts and compares it to themselves ultimately harming their own self-esteem. Others may find their self-esteem lowered when their posts, videos or blogs do not receive as many likes as other posts, as that is how they find their own validation (Newsome). They do not look inward for their validation but seek it from a virtual world who in most cases does not know that person’s true self. While all of the likes, share and comments are happening, many teens think that they are making connections in this viral world.
To quote Sherrie Campbell, a psychotherapist, ‘social media can give us a false sense of belonging and connecting that is not built on real-life exchanges. This makes it increasingly easy to lose oneself to cyberspace connections and give them more weight than they deserve.’ (Newsome). When comparing connections, reality versus viral, think of your physical best friend. You know everything about them. You can tell when they are lying or doing something out of character. The same cannot be said for connections made virally. You only know what the other person on the other side of the computer wants you to know, how they want to be perceived. Teens, unlike adults, are unable to differentiate the two. Often, teens go out and they bring their viral world with them. Look around, how many cellphone flashes go off when you are out to eat?
If you watch you often see people sitting at a table and eating, but not connecting with each other. They are too busy posting to their social media pages that they aren’t truly connecting, even though they are at the same table. It is almost as though their experience didn’t happen unless you see it on social media, this thought process is leading to a lack of face-to-face connections. The only constant is change, we see it in how we interact with others. We have gone from a society that would interact with one another in the real world, to a society that connects via social media.
Social media has both advantages and disadvantages. It is the negative side of social media like cyberbullying, the lowering of self-esteem as well as fewer face-to-face interactions that we need to be mindful of. For the mental health of our teens, we need to be more aware of the negative effects that social media can have when it is abused. .

The Negative Effects of Social Media on Social Life Many popular social websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and others have been introduced to our lives. The basic concept behind all these websites is to improve our social lives where we can contact and keep in touch with our friends and relatives. It allows us to share photos, personal information, interests, and other information. However, we have to make sure that our social networking does not cause any problems or negative consequences on our social lives.
First it is essential to know what does social media mean. Social Media 101: Overview & advice (2013) has defined social media, as “Social networks are webbased services that focus on building online communities of people who share interests
and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others”. Social media threatens a person’s privacy; it can put your personal safety at risk. Due to the huge amount of information displayed on social media websites people might use personal information such as birth date, profile picture, and home address to thief your identity and misuse it. Another threat that social media has, its ability to reveal something about you that your employer or school does not know; what many people do not know that lots of employers monitor their employees’ illegal activities through social media instead of going anywhere else to check their illegal history. Because it is a place where you share your daily life events and activities freely without thinking of how others will explore your profile page. All your activities are stated clearly in your profile page on social media with out your consciousness about what your employer may see in your profile page. Another side of the problem that
what recruiters do when they want to select a candidate, they preview his personal skills, how does he treat others, and how does he judge things through social media. They could analyze his profile and come up with his strengths and weaknesses. For instance, for a customer services position recruiters will see the candidate’s relationships and how he treats others to examine his ability to interact with different customers. Thus, sharing your personal information will be a gift for anyone who wants to threaten your privacy.
With regards to its disadvantages social media presents fake profiles. This can fall into two aspects; the first one is in the situation of a person who use fake information to look perfect in order to attract others, so that he fool people who have build a relationship with that person depending on the information posted in his profile.

Those people will be shocked when they discover the fakeness of their friend’s profile and it may also cause many psychological and social implications on them. The other side of presenting fake profiles is when people miss present their personal characteristics online, which may let people repel. Accordingly they will not build any relationships; especially people who do not know him. Therefore as Professor Monica Whitty (2012) has guided us to prevent the crime of building fake relationships that “In order to help prevent this crime, clients need to be made fully aware of this scam before they start using online dating sites”.
This phenomenon has many social implications; one that it is starting to make people have a tendency to lose touch with reality. They use social media to touch with their friends and relatives instead of reality. This might make others feel neglected
which might affect their lives. Also, people start to be social networking addicted; they will be less productive in life and their societies since they waste most of their time on social media. They will start to be isolated and unsocial. Since they used to interact with people through social media, they will lose their communication and social skills. As well as they will create and live the life that they wanted it to be which they cannot achieve in real in this visual world. Social media allows a poor person to look rich, wealthy, and attractive. On the other hand, an ugly lady could beautify herself to attract others. At the end of the day a person should have a balance between real and online life.
