Ban Smoking in Public Places Essay

This is a  ban smoking in public places  essay. It is an example of an essay where you have to give your opinion as to whether you agree or disagree.

The sample answer shows you how you can present the opposing argument first, that is not your opinion, and then present your opinion in the following paragraph.

It is always a good idea to present a balanced essay which presents both sides of the argument, but you must always make it very clear what your opinion is and which side of the argument you support.

Write about the following topic:

Smoking not only harms the smoker, but also those who are nearby. Therefore, smoking should be banned in public places.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Medical studies have shown that smoking not only leads to health problems for the smoker, but also for people close by. As a result of this, many believe that smoking should not be allowed in public places. Although there are arguments on both sides, I strongly agree that a ban is the most appropriate course of action.

Opponents of such a ban argue against it for several reasons. Firstly, they say that passive smokers make the choice to breathe in other people’s smoke by going to places where it is allowed. If they would prefer not to smoke passively, then they do not need to visit places where smoking is permitted. In addition, they believe a ban would possibly drive many bars and pubs out of business as smokers would not go there anymore. They also argue it is a matter of freedom of choice. Smoking is not against the law, so individuals should have the freedom to smoke where they wish.

However, there are more convincing arguments in favour of a ban. First and foremost, it has been proven that tobacco consists of carcinogenic compounds which cause serious harm to a person’s health, not only the smoker. Anyone around them can develop cancers of the lungs, mouth and throat, and other sites in the body. It is simply not fair to impose this upon another person. It is also the case that people’s health is more important than businesses. In any case, pubs and restaurants could adapt to a ban by, for example, allowing smoking areas.

In conclusion, it is clear that it should be made illegal to smoke in public places. This would improve the health of thousands of people, and that is most definitely a positive development.

Smoking has been proven scientifically that it can cause many health factors such as lung cancer,  heart disease, emphysema, and many more. Despite this knowledge that has been passed on through generations of how many health concerns smoking leads to, people continue to smoke themselves, or around other people. Smoking causes danger to one’s health but now with further research there is now evidence suggesting smoking can cause problems for those around you.

Secondhand smoke can also have long-term risks to children. The act of public smoking poses a threat since it also sends a message to the children that watch. People learn the most starting at a young age, when exposed to those that smoke in public they can learn that smoking might be okay. According to an article by Ronald Bayer and Kathleen E. Bachynski, “By challenging the perception of smoking a normal adult behavior, smokefree policies can change the attitudes and behaviors of adolescents, resulting in a reduction in tobacco use initiation” (HealthAffairs).  The exposure of tobacco use at a young age can influence adolescents to act at an early age. This can possibly cause children to learn that it may be fine to smoke since adults are doing it. Due to this reasoning children can act upon this mindset and smoke at an early age which can damage their developing bodies. These children are too young, therefore do not possess the necessary knowledge to realize that these actions are in fact harmful and could possibly kill them. The forbidding of smoking in public places, frequented by the public like parks, playgrounds, outlets, or beaches, can prevent children from learning about these habits in the first place. When seen, children will think that this is a common adult behavior and will try to copy them.  Children are at risk of learning these bad habits, but so are young adults. Teenagers at the age of 13-17 tend to worry more about their social life. In doing so, they commit stupid actions such as smoking to look cool. These young teens can pick up used or sometimes accidentally thrown away cigarette packets to smoke in front of their friends to gain some type of recognition. In doing so they are also affected since they are still young. It can become a terrible habit, in which can become very addictive. This results in them smoking for years and years, and what’s worse is they started at such a young age. The ban on public smoking doesn’t always have to be the result of complaints of secondhand smoke but to assure the safety of our children’s future.

Areas where children reside may also implicate that there are parents around, and in some cases pregnant mothers. When a mother breathes in secondhand smoke it also affects the baby inside her stomach. Mothers exposed to secondhand smoke can have many risks. Stated in an article by the American Academy of Pediatrics, “when you’re pregnant, your baby is exposed to harmful chemicals which cause miscarriage, premature birth, lower birth weight (which could mean a less healthier baby), sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and learning problems and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).” According to data from NIIH, secondhand exposure during the late 1900s for women have been exponentially high. Around the 1980s, up to 80% of women that are age 4 years and older were exposed to secondhand smoke.  The puffs of smoke left in the air where children and mothers roam have a huge negative impact on their health. This is a concerning issue and by forbidding smoking in public places we can safely assure the health of our loved ones.

Secondhand smoke and smoking aren’t the only problems the public worry about, there are also cases which affect the environment. In public settings surrounded by buildings such as restaurants, parks, work buildings, and houses  there are times when smoke fires can occur. Smoke fires are disasters that are caused by smoking-related fires. According to a study by UC Davis Health (published in 2000), smoking is a leading cause of fire disaster and death worldwide. This is a problematic issue since there are those that can be affected by this fire. There are many unfortunate cases that are results from these smoking-related incidents such as the Oakland Hills fire in California. Also stated by UC Davis Health, “in which a lit cigarette remains a suspected cause, left 10,000 homeless, destroyed nearly 4,000 dwellings and cost more than $1.5 billion.” This problem is a major concern for the public’s safety and it’s also costing a fortune to fix. Smoking-related fires are costing over 27$ billion yearly, the California, Oakland Hills fire costed more than $1.5 billion, the fire in Mont Blanc Tunnel costed over $1 billion, and the ammonium nitrate explosion costed more than $4 billion dollars. These disasters were all accidents but they all have the same culprit which are discarded cigarette buds not properly put out. Many public areas today and in the past are known to have thousands to millions of discarded cigarette buds lying around on the streets. If not properly put out they can create disastrous outcomes that affect everything around it whether it is people, animals, and the environment. Some found in commercial areas such as piers where it’s built upon a wooden base. Situations in which someone accidentally does not distinguish the flame properly can accidentally cause a fire. Ban of the use of cigarettes in these public areas, especially in flammable areas, can prevent any further possible outbreaks.

The ban on public smoking should have been inputted long ago. Many people consider this ban either because it’s a health issue, a concern due to the impact it has on young minds, or just because it is a nuisance to them. There are many activities that were banned due to the possible impact it had on children, these activities include sexual acts in public,gambling, and nudity. With so many negative impacts smoking has on the smoker or those around it, it would make sense to implement a law where smoking is banned in public places.

The positive effects of banning public smoking outweighs the negative.

Everybody knows about the harmful effects of smoking tobacco. It does significant damage to one’s lungs, as well as teeth and skin. Moreover, smoking is addictive, and quitting the bad habit once it has been acquired becomes a serious problem with time. In addition to that, smoking strongly affects one’s budget: heavy smokers go through one or two packs a day. However, people still prefer using regular cigarettes daily to using such devices as vapes. There have always been concerns about banning smoking in public places and there are several reasons that prove this ban is necessary.

First of all, passive smoking may be just as bad for one’s health as regular smoking. Unfortunately, in this case, an individual is not able to control the fumes intake because he is not the one with this bad habit. Cigarette smokers are responsible not only for their health but also for the health of those around them. Since there are always many children in public places, there is a high risk of them being affected by smoke. According to Wenzel, “smoking causes early damage to the adolescent body” (p 5, par 4) that can be applied to passive smoking as well. Children are more prone to suffering from its effects, according to Monson and Arsenault (par 33) many people have certain respiratory conditions, like asthma, and the effect that tobacco fumes can have on their health is severe. Even breathing in drifting tobacco for a short period can be fatal.

Moreover, it is annoying for most people to be exposed to smoke involuntarily and have no other option but to breathe in the fumes instead of clean air. Not all non-smokers can stand the irritating smell of tobacco; the fact that the smoke tends to linger on clothes and hair for days annoys people even more.

Restrictions on using tobacco products could solve that problem. In addition to this, the ban on smoking in public places will benefit the environment, as there will be less litter. Not all people are responsible when it comes to using bins and trash cans to throw away the rubbish. Cigarette butts can be found not only on the streets but also on playgrounds, sandboxes, and beaches, which makes them a potential hazard for children. The remains of cigarettes still contain harmful substances that can damage one’s health. It is also important to mention that not only children may be in danger: birds and animals may accidentally swallow cigarette butts. Establishing a ban will protect wildlife as well as people.

Restriction on smoking in public places may contribute to achieving several important benefits. It will solve certain environmental issues, protecting animals and birds and making cities cleaner. Little children will not be at risk of touching possibly contagious remains of cigarettes. The ban may help smokers quit their bad habit, making it inconvenient and even impossible for them to maintain it. It will improve the overall health of the world’s population by getting rid of the cause of many illnesses. Apart from that, the ban will remove the potential allergen that triggers people with respiratory conditions, like bronchitis or asthma. Not everyone will indeed follow the law right away, but establishing it in the first place is an important step towards a better future for the planet.

Smoking in Public Places Has to Be Banned

Smoking in public places ought to be banned as it not only affects the health of smokers but nonsmokers as well. This is because when people smoke in public places, cigarette smoke contaminates the air with its negative impacts affecting all who breathe it. Nevertheless, the number of smokers keeps rising each year despite heightened public awareness where people are adequately informed of how harmful smoking is (Bhat et al., 2015). On this note, since a person makes a personal decision of engaging in the greatly addictive habit while knowing the health risks involved, the choice of smokers ought to be respected. The government or other stakeholders should not dictate where or when smokers should smoke. Despite smoking being the choice of smokers, it should be banned in public places as it subjects even nonsmokers to its negative health effects.

Every person has the right to a harmless environment and fresh air. In this regard, smoking in public places ought to be banned as it violates such rights and results in many health risks for smokers and nonsmokers. In line with reports from the Center for Disease Control, secondhand smoke presents about 250 toxic chemicals to nonsmokers, and this encompasses over 50 that are carcinogenic (Stillman, Soong, Zheng, & Navas-Acien, 2015). Research concerning nonsmokers shows that being exposed to secondhand smoke results in about 3,500 cancer deaths over and above around 50,000 deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases every year (Stillman et al., 2015). Where smoking in public places is allowed, nonsmokers have no option apart from being secondhand smokers. Just as smokers choose to smoke, the rights of nonsmokers ought to be upheld by banning smoking in public places; it is not sensible to safeguard the rights of smokers if they are harmful to other people. However, some arguments banning smoking in public places is a violation of the rights of smokers. Most smokers are mature people and should be allowed to smoke without limitations unless they decide otherwise.

Smoking in public places presents a bad example and children may be easily attracted to it in their development stages. Children tend to copy the behaviors of grownups and sometimes fail to distinguish between right and wrong practices. On this note, they take the behavior they see being practiced freely by adults as the right thing to do. Studies affirm that 60% of the teenagers in places where people smoke in public places find it “cool” and 40% attempt it at some point (Turner et al., 2016). To prevent adult smokers from continually influencing children and increasing the number of smokers, smoking in public places has to be illegalized. Nevertheless, other than banning cigarette smoking in public places, both children and nonsmokers ought to be trained to have self-control. In this manner, they will not be easily influenced into smoking. After all, many other vices are happening within the community apart from smoking and sometimes children get to witness them.

Smoking in public places increases litter, which makes the surroundings untidy. With the increased number of smokers, cigarette butts are continually detracting from a given place’s aesthetic. Reports from the Ocean Conservancy affirm that cigarette butts contribute to about 20% of the litter collected in the course of cleanups (Bhat et al., 2015). In this regard, banning smoking in public places will go a long way to reducing litter and enhancing the beauty of environs. However, there are numerous economic gains associated with cigarettes, and banning smoking in public places will reduce the number of smokers drastically, which can render a country debilitated economically. On this note, smoking in public places should not be banned. As an alternative, the government should educate people on the proper disposal of litter. This will reduce the level of litter in the surroundings without hurting the economy.

It has been found that smoking in public places increases the number of smokers, which results in poverty intensification. Research shows that many smokers begin smoking after seeing other people doing it in public places and approximately 15% of their income is used for cigarettes (Bhat et al., 2015). This reduces the amount of money they could have used in other beneficial ways such as health care, paying school fees, and buying foodstuff. Accordingly, smoking in public places results in the rise of family violence as the non-smoking spouse will find that the other is misusing money and could resort to aggression in an effort of making them stop the behavior.

There are arguments that because it is a person’s choice and free will to become a smoker, their decision should be respected. The government and other stakeholders should not infringe on the rights of smokers by prohibiting smoking in public places. Nonetheless, irrespective of smoking being a personal decision, it subjects nonsmokers and children to its health impacts. Inhaling secondhand smoke has been established to cause approximately 3,500 cancer deaths and over 50,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases among nonsmokers every year. Since its drawbacks outweigh its benefits, smoking in public places has to be banned.

The idea of smoking in colleges and campuses has developed a mixed reaction in the USA and in many other parts of the world such that it has posed a very hot and contentious universal debate.

Several campuses and colleges have tried to impose a total ban on smoking within their environs, some of them succeeding while others failing to do so. For instance, colleges like Santa Ana and Fullerton have managed to ban smoking completely within their environs, while others such as Huntington Beach and Golden West College still allow smoking in prescribed places such as in parking lots.

Fullerton College was the first to successfully impose a smoking ban in the year 2007 (Bates 57). Nevertheless, many colleges and campuses have not managed to follow suit because of some state laws which assert that smoking is only proscribed inside buildings and within 20 feet from entry points of buildings in all campuses. These laws continue to give students the right to smoke within certain areas of their campuses.

As aforementioned, section 7595 of the government code affirms that smoking is proscribed only in public buildings and within 20 feet from entry points of buildings in all campuses (Merrill 36).Therefore, the opponents of this subject believe that since it is the right of every citizen to do anything that is recognized as legal, it is very wrong to impose a total ban on smoking, especially in campuses.

The most important thing is to ensure that students follow the laid down rules and regulations such as the strict use of the recommended areas of smoking. In deed, it is very unfair to send students off campus to smoke.

In addition, the opponents of this argument believe that smoking should not be banned because it helps students to relax whenever they are in stressful situations. Concerning the health risks that are brought about by smoking, they assert that every mature citizen should be in a position to separate good behavior from wrong behavior.

They say that since there has been an integration of cigarette smoking topics in schools for several decades, by the time a student reaches campus, he/she must be in a position to understand the risks that cigarette smoking poses to their health and therefore they should be able to make informed decisions about smoking. They also argue that it is very unfair to impose an immediate ban on cigarette smoking in campus yet it is clearly understood that smoking is an additive activity which can not be stopped at once.

Even though campus students have the right to smoke within some prescribed areas whenever they wish to do so, as mandated by some state laws, they ought to realize the fact that cigarette smoking has got very serious and detrimental effects on human health. Smoking of cigarettes can bring about lung infections to both first-hand and second-hand smokers. Therefore, smokers need to recognize that their right to smoke may greatly infringe on the rights of their non-smoking counterparts.

It is obvious that students know the negative effects of smoking cigarettes. For instance, it is expensive for them and it may also reduce their lifetime. Generally speaking, cigarette smoking is just bad. Currently, at least forty three colleges in the USA have imposed a total ban on cigarette smoking in their campuses and this trend is increasing especially among commuter schools and community colleges (Merrill 40).

However, it is hard to impose such a ban in some colleges because of the mixed reactions that are held by different stakeholders about the issue of smoking, and the existing campus policies which give the smokers the right to smoke in prescribed areas. According to the research that was carried out by the U.S. Department of Health and Human services, 31% of college students smoke cigarettes. This figure exceeds the national general average of 25% (Longmire 15).

It is also worth to note that even though there has been an integration of cigarette smoking topics in schools for several decades, cigarette smoking has continued to attract many youths and this continues to raise a lot of alarm about their future. This is because cigarette smoking is the major contributor of the cases of lung cancer in the entire world.

Research indicates that close to eighty percent of men who die from lung cancer, and seventy five percent of women who die from the same disease do so because of smoking tobacco. Research also indicates that the risk of lung cancer increases when a person starts smoking at an early age, and with an increase in the number of cigarettes that a person smokes in a day (Robicsek 56).

Scientific research has proved that cigarette smoking is harmful to the body. The smoke that comes out of a burning cigarette is a compound mixture of several chemicals which are produced when tobacco is burned.

This smoke contains a deadly compound called tar, which consists of more than four thousand chemicals which are very poisonous, and a majority of them have been clearly identified to be the main cause of cancer. Most of these chemicals are also known to cause lung diseases and heart problems. Some of these chemicals include cyanide, benzene, methanol, ammonia, formaldehyde and acetylene (Merrill 45).

Other deadly substances that are found in cigarettes include carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide gases which are very poisonous. The most active component of a cigarette is nicotine. Nicotine is a very addictive compound. Cigarette smoking can cause several problems such as cancer, lung damage and heart infections among many other diseases.

Research also indicates that more than thirty percent of the deaths that result in the United States occur due to the use of tobacco. Cigarette smoking also causes eighty seven percent of the deaths that result due to lung cancer. Other types of tobacco-related cancers include mouth cancer, cancer of the larynx, cancer of the throat and esophagus and cancer of the bladder. There is also a very close connection between cigarette smoking and the occurrence of the cancers of the kidney, pancreas, stomach and the cervix.

Cigarette smoking can also cause lung damage which begins at the early stages of smoking. Cigarette smokers encounter many problems with their lungs as compared to non-smokers and this situation gets worse when an individual increases his/her capacity to smoke. Smoking is linked to many dangerous lung infections which are just as perilous as lung cancer. These infections include emphysema and chronic bronchitis which cause difficulties in breathing and may even cause death.

Cigarette smoking also augments the risk of heart infections which stand out as the major causes of deaths in the U.S. Out of all the risk factors of heart infections, i.e. excess cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, cigarette smoking, physical lethargy and high blood pressure, cigarette smoking remains the leading risk factor for impulsive deaths that result from heart attacks (Bates 78).

In addition, low levels of cigarette smoking which may not be able to cause lung infections are capable of damaging the heart. Therefore, second-hand smokers also stand a very high chance of getting heart infections.

As stated earlier, Section 7595 of the government code affirms that smoking is proscribed in all public buildings and within 20 feet from entry points of buildings in all campuses (Merrill 36). Even though this ruling is good, it is not sufficient because it seems to discriminate the innocent second-hand smokers who continue to suffer from cigarette smoke which pollutes the air around them.

Cigarette smoking has also very detrimental effects to the real smokers and therefore they should be able to accept this ban because it is meant for their own good. Though it is very hard to ban citizens from doing something which is legally right, smoking should be gradually banned in campuses so as to protect the non-smokers. This is because campuses are public places which consist of both smokers and non-smokers.

My stand on this issue differs significantly from my opponents who believe that smoking should be allowed in some prescribed areas in campuses. My stand is that cigarette smoking should be banned in campuses because it impacts negatively on the non-smokers. Banning of cigarette smoking in campuses would enable the non-smoking citizens to enjoy the delight of breathing unpolluted air.

Nevertheless, my stand does not include cigarette smoking in private places such as in homes. At the same time, cigarette smokers should understand that the non-smokers are not trying to be intolerant when they keep on complaining about them. Rather, they are doing it for the sake of their own health.

In conclusion, smoking should be totally banned in campuses and colleges because of its severe health risks to both smokers and non-smokers. The health risks are much more to non-smokers because they may double up especially to those who already suffer from other ailments such as heart and lung problems.

In addition, a very short exposure by a non-smoker to secondhand smoke may have abrupt severe effects on his/her cardiovascular system thus escalating the risk for lung and heart infections. This makes the non-smoker to have a higher risk of catching infections from cigarette smoke than the real smoker yet he/she is very innocent. A more effective way of reducing smoking in campuses would be to provide tobacco termination counseling programs in the campuses.

It is estimated that 36.5 million adults smoke in the United States of America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). A cigarette contains 7,000 chemicals and 70 of those can cause cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). When someone decides to smoke a cigarette, they are not only choosing to allow those toxins into their body but are imposing all those same toxins on anyone around them. Why has this deadly habit become such a casual part of the American life? This habit is not only harmful to the person smoking, but is hurting everyone around them. It may be their decision to smoke and cause damage to their own bodies but when they decide to smoke in public they are infringing on the rights of everyone around them right to protect their health. Smoking should be made illegal because it is not only harmful to the smokers but also causes harm to fetuses in utero, developing children and any other adults who may breathe that smoke in.
