My Aim In Life Essay for Students and Children

500+ Words Essay on My Aim in Life
It is a well-known fact that a person without an aim is a person without a life. All the creatures in this universe have one or another specific aim. It is common for all things. As the human is the best creature among them all, he has been given a right to select what he wants to do in his life. The mindset of each and every person is of its own type. Therefore, his aim in life will also be different from others.
Life is God’s greatest blessing; nevertheless, if there is no purpose and aim, life is useless and meaningless. Every one of us is born with a mission. It is essential to have a goal in life. If you want to pursue something in your life, you must have a goal. Student life is the ideal time to set goals. A person with a defined objective outperforms someone who does not have a goal in life. And if you don’t know what you want, you’ll never be motivated to work hard. To live a good life and deal with challenges, we need a proper plan. As a result, it is critical for everyone to have a life goal.

What is the Aim?
In a generic term purpose or goal is an aim. A person in his childhood might want to be a famous astronaut or a movie star or a police officer or something like that. Aim means to intend, to try, or to aspire. Each aim generally starts with a declaration of setting the goal, then breaking it into smaller pieces over a set timeline. Thus to achieve it one has to overcome many obstacles and setbacks from time to time.
Importance of aim in life:
There is a popular saying that a man without an aim is like an aim without a rudder. It means a ship without a rudder faces danger. Thus similarly a man without aim cannot reach towards his goal of life. He stumbles in his way of life.
So every person must have a definite aim. So, the aim of life is to give your life a purpose and meaning. Certainly, it is done by finding out what truly matters to you. Your purpose is to create more joy in life or to show others how you can live your life in the best possible manner.
How to find your Aim?
If you try to accomplish things that aren’t meant for you, that doesn’t offer you a sense of belonging and don’t provide you inner peace and happiness, you’re not in the correct field. You are not pursuing your goals and passions.
Everyone is unique in their own way. One may excel in academics while the other may be skilled in photography. Some people are born to aid the needy, others with bright brains, still others to pursue art and architecture, and still others simply write their way through life and become authors.
Simply close your eyes and think about something you appreciate the most on a larger scale, and that’s all there is to it. That is your life’s passion and goal. All you have to do is get closer to the part and shoot at it. By just following your passion, you can make your goal a reality.
Primary Aim in life:
A person can set the aim of his life by applying various parameters in life. Some of these maybe –
- To live with a specific purpose and passion every day
- To live for others by helping them.
- To become a great father, mother, son or daughter.
- To become a wildly successful entrepreneur and businessman
- To live a healthy, active and fit life
- To live with financial freedom in life.

Different people have different aims. Some people may want to become a doctor while others may want to start their own business. Likewise if engineering appeals, to some, the army may be the attraction for others. Some aim at becoming a teacher while social service or politics suits others. So different people adopt different aims according to their inclination or taste or perception about life.
How to Choose the right Aim of life?
It is the responsibility of the parents and the teachers to persuade their wards to select a profession according to their aptitude. Thus one can say that the right aim means right life and the wrong aim means wrong life. So, we should be very cautious while deciding on our aim.
Certainly, this is the most difficult problem that a young man faces is the selection of a profession. If a person does not choose his aim rightly, he will be always misfitted in his life. Thus, the best aim would be for one in which one feels happy always and he can do something worthwhile. Also at the same time, he assures about bright prospects in life.
Everyone should set a goal that is personal to them and will always inspire them to reach new heights. Therefore, don’t follow the mob and mimic the ambitions of friends.
How to Achieve the Aim in Life?
We should never make wealth or power the end of our existence, whether we succeed or fail in accomplishing our aim. We must never chase the celebrity bubble. Our goal should be to achieve our set aim solely for our own good, for our own enjoyment and satisfaction.
Some non-avoidable points which must be remembered are-
- Be Proactive
- No More Negativity

- Fully Focused
- Break it down

Every person decides at some point what he wants to become. And, in this era of modernization, I am aiming to become a doctor. Not just because my mom is a doctor but also it is a noble profession.
Many people aspire to become an engineer, architects, dancers, interior designers etc. Amid all the other professions, there are some particular reasons behind my preference for becoming a doctor.
A doctor is a person who saves others’ lives by treating them well. He helps people in curing all the diseases by giving them the required medicine or through surgery or various other procedures. Not only curing people by treatment but also a doctor must offer hope and joy to the patient and his family in times of difficulty.
No One would be able to survive in this world if there was no doctor. Nothing could be greater than saving someone’s life and spreading joy in the world.
However, it is not easy to become a doctor. I have to overcome a lot of hurdles to gain success. First I have to study hard and then I have to clear the medical entrance examination to secure a seat in a medical college first and then complete the programme to reach my goal.
I want to be a doctor because I want to help those who cannot afford the cost of treatment of many difficult diseases. I have a goal of opening a hospital of my own that will be equipped with all the modern medical instruments. And those who require treatment but can’t afford the cost of it will be able to get treated in my hospital. I idolize Dr Devi Shetty, the well known cardiac surgeon. Hence I have decided to embark on this journey.
It is a long journey. But I am quite ambitious and I will put in a lot of hard work to fulfill my goal.
Characteristics of a Good Essay
It must be concise: Essays must always be concise. It does not mean that the essay is supposed to be the short one, but it must be of the length required to convey the idea, no more no less. In this instance, the idea of Aim in the life of the student.
It must be clear: Essays are supposed to be clear; it means the main argument or the central idea of the essay must be clear and not vague, and the same goes for each of the sentences of the essay.
For example, in the topic, My Aim in Life, if the student is writing, My aim in life is to become a doctor, then the next sentence must be something that adds meaning to it, such as because I like to help the people, and not something irrelevant, such as, I like singing.
It is very important to be successful in your life. Hence, fixing a goal and staying focused is crucial in your life. So, making a proper plan from a young age and timely execution along with the right attitude are the ultimate keys to success.

Our aims in life may differ from each other and we may create our definitions of success and happiness. Having an aim in life gives us a direction to walk on and work towards. Below are some sample essays on “Aim in Life”.

100 Words Essay on Aim in Life
My aim in life is to be mentally and physically healthy, and happy. Everyday, I wake up early, meditate, and then do yoga. Yoga and meditation bring a sense of stability in my life. After doing yoga, I make myself a cup of tea and make a list of all that I have to do in a day. This gives a structure to my forthcoming day and I am able to delegate appropriate time to each task. I believe that if I’m happy, and mentally and physically healthy, I will be able to do well in my studies and achieve more, academically and professionally.
200 Words Essay on Aim in Life
If we don't have an aim in life, we won't know where to go and how to get there. People, sometimes, also choose their aims or goals by drawing inspiration from others around them like parents, instructors, and family members. While you are in school, setting objectives and making a plan for the future is a wise decision.
My aim in life is to become a doctor one day. I come from a medical background, and like my mother, I want to work in neurosurgery. My desire to become a doctor and my interest in the medical field is what motivates me to work harder in school. From understanding how a single cell works to how the brain works is intriguing to me. In order to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor and a neurosurgeon, I want to work harder and do better in the subjects of biology, chemistry, physics, arithmetic, and psychology.
If I am able to achieve my goal of becoming a doctor, I would like to set up my own hospital at some point, where I would also treat underprivileged people free of cost. I am confident and hopeful that one day I will achieve my aim of becoming a successful doctor.
500 Words Essay on Aim in Life
"To aim" refers to an aspiration. Generally speaking, the word "aim" denotes a purpose or objective. Having an aim shapes a person’s life and gives it meaning. For example, a preschooler may aspire to become a well-known astronaut, a celebrity, security officer, or anything that seems fascinating to them at that age. Every goal frequently begins with a target, which is then broken down into more manageable chunks over a certain length of time and achieving it requires overcoming several challenges and some setbacks as well.
How to Achieve an Aim in Life
Selecting the appropriate goal according to your abilities will enable you to steer your life in the proper direction. Here are 5 steps on how to achieve your aim in life
Decide. Consider a goal you wish to pursue. It doesn't matter how big or small it is; decide where you want to see yourself in the future.
Put it in writing. The likelihood of achieving your goal increases when you put it in writing. Put a deadline as to when you want to achieve this goal. Rather simply saying, "I want to do," explain your objective in precise terms and timeframes, such as, "I want to plant lettuce and the vacant spot in my garden by the end of May."
Break down your goal. This is especially important for big goals. Consider the little objectives that will help you reach your main objective. We can be more precise if we divide things. Take the case of wanting to stay fit. Here, a more manageable objective may be to "start running everyday."
Plan your first step. The first step in the scenario above is to consider routinely going for runs. According to an old Chinese saying, the journey of 1000 miles starts with one step. Even if walking 1,000 miles isn't your ultimate aim, planning your first step can actually help you get going.
Keep going. Sometimes achieving our objectives might be challenging, but we must persist. Think of a different step you could take if the one you're currently taking isn't moving you forward, even just a little. It increases our chances of success if we consider several strategies for achieving our goals.
My Aim of Life
My aim in life is to become a teacher, and inspire young minds. Education is an expanding sector that gives a person the power to change the world. A teacher is like a potter that moulds children to find their identity as individuals. Willian Arthur Ward once said that an unexceptional teacher teaches, a good teacher explains thoroughly, a superior teacher performs demonstrations, while the most excellent teacher inspires young minds.
Why I Want To Be A Teacher | I sometimes wonder why I aspire to become a teacher, and realise that the choice emanated from my life experiences. Since childhood I have seen my mother going to school and influencing every child by helping them become a better version of themselves. My goal as a teacher is to influence every student to achieve success in life and provide them with knowledge to survive through the challenges of life. I aim to help every growing student and influence them to contribute to society’s upliftment.

The aim in life is really important, without aim life is like without a rudder. A rudderless ship doesn’t know where it is going. Similarly, if we don’t have an aim in our life, we won’t know where to reach. So if you want to be successful and do something in your life then you just need to pick an aim.
And need to work for that aim. There are so many aims in human life. I have an aim also. I want to become a Pilot. I hope I will be able to become one day and I will study for it.
The Aim in Life – Short Essay (150 Words)
The aim in life is really important if you want to pursue something in your life. Student life is the best time to fix an aim. We all are a student and we should have an aim in life. We need to prepare ourselves to reach our goal. Someone with a fixed goal does a better performance in life than someone who doesn’t have a goal. Your aim or goal will inspire you to work hard, to study hard. And you know, without working hard you can’t be successful.

And if you don’t know your aim, you will never feel that inspiration to work hard. Even you don’t know what to study or which particular topic should be emphasized in your lesson. There are so many aims, and you should pick one and need to stick with your own aim. You should not change your aim or bounce your decision.
My Future Plan of Life – Essay (300 Words)
Introduction: Everyone should have a specific future plan in their life. In my life, I have got a future plan or aim, and I am very honest about my aim. I know that without an aim, life is like a ship without n rudder, that doesn’t know his goal. But I know my goal and I am working on my goal.
My Future Plan of Life: I always wanted to be a doctor and now my family is inspiring to become a doctor. My parents are really supportive and they give importance to my opinion. Now I read in class nine and I will give an SSC examination next year.
I am a student of the science group. Without studying science, someone can’t become a doctor. My favorite subject is Biology. My teachers are really helpful; they help me a lot to understand everything on this particular subject.
Mr. Fazlur Karim is the biology teacher and he knows about my future plan. He always inspires me to work harder and pursue my aim in life. The reason behind My Future Plan: I have a few specific reasons for my future plan. I was living in a village when I was 10 years old. I have seen that there is not a proper medication system for the villagers. Few village doctors are working, but they don’t have proper knowledge of medical science.
I always wanted to do something for these people. After completing my medical degree, I will be there and start providing free treatment for poor peoples. My reason is too much honest; I want to serve the society for being better.
My Preparation: As I said before, I am a high school student in class nine. After completing SSC I will admit myself in a local college to pursue an HSC degree. After completing HSC, I will participate in the medical admission test. I am pretty much confident about that and I know I will work hard to pursue my dream.
Conclusion: Everyone should have a reasonable aim in their life that will help you to reach success.
My Aim in Life – Essay (500 Words)
Introduction: My aim in life is to become an engineer and I will write about that here. Everyone should have a specific aim in their life. Without a proper aim, you can’t go ahead in the road of success. If you want to pursue success in your life, you must have to fix an aim and need to work for that aim. Different Kinds of Aim: Different peoples have different types of aim.
I have seen lots of my friends want to become a doctor, and some of them want to become a teacher. Like doctors and teachers, there are a bunch of aims and goals available that students and kids choose in their life. Right now in this world, the top trending professions are Engineer, Doctor, Teacher, Programmer, Designer, Architect, Marketer, Supervisor, Manager, etc. Maybe you have something unique into you and you want to pursue that. I respect your choice and I suggest you work on your aim.
My Aim in Life: As I said in the starting, my aim in life is to become an Engineer. Specifically a Computer Engineer. Right now I am studying in class ten in the science group. From my childhood, I was a tech lover and still, now I am too much connected with tech things and I wish to stay connected forever. There are so many things that I can do with my computer. My father brought a computer for me when I was in sixth grade and I am still using that PC.
It is working amazingly for me. I know that there are so many things to learn about a computer and it never ends. I know about basic internet using, managing emails, word processing software, etc. And I am reading a book on ‘Learning HTML’. I hope that will help me to understand coding in the future.
The reason behind My Aim in Life: I love to play video games and I am very passionate about that. When I was a kid I thought that how do they create what types of games? But now I know that people who worked as a software or game developer can build video games. I have so many ideas on my head and I hope I will find so many ideas in the future to create games. I want to build my own video game and let that play for every single kid in this world.
My Preparation: I know that I need to pursue a degree in computer science in the programming sector if I want to become a game or software developer and I am preparing myself for this. I hope that I will do a good result in my SSC examination.
And then I will complete my HSC with good results. I will admit in a public or private university in the course of Computer Science and Engineering. I know there are so many good CSE universities here in my country.
Conclusion: I am really honest and passionate about my aim in life. I will try my best to reach my goal and I suggest everyone do the same.

Introduction: Our SSC exams are knocking on the door. We are worried. Because most of the students in our class are very weak in English. We do not know the rules of pronunciation and cannot write correctly in English due to a lack of an effective English grammar book. I have decided to do something to solve this problem.
Decision: Not only our school, but most of the students in our country’s schools are weak in English. Therefore, a significant number of students fail the SSC exams every year. Reason: I have already found some problems with grammar, such as (i) there are no specific rules for pronunciation of words in English, (ii) many definitions in grammar books are wrong. (iii) Some principles are shown in grammar books without grammatical explanation. But a grammatical explanation was needed here. Solving these problems, I will explain them step by step in my grammar book in a simple way, which will make it easier for them to learn English. This will increase the pass rate and remove the fear of English from the minds of the students. The book I am going to write about English grammar will be called ‘An Exceptional English Grammar’.
Conclusion: Without progress in education, our nation will not be able to stand tall in the world. Since the terminology of science is English and it is an international language, it is time to make our nation proficient in English. I hope I can contribute something in this case. That is why I have decided that I will try to explain the importance of learning English to the people of this country and will continue to do my best to make English education easier for them. Essay on My Aim in Life (100 words Paragraph)
Every person needs to have a life goal. They are recognised and helped in achieving their dreams and goals by a target. Those without a career plan have no reason to live. A person without direction is like a structure without pillars. They complain, get thrown out, and frequently blame fate.
Every person has unique goals. Some people desire to be lawyers, while others want to be doctors. Some people might be inspired to become teachers, while others might decide to imitate their favourite performer and become actors.
People adapt their goals to fit their environment. When choosing an objective, we should be extremely cautious because some objectives may mislead you. A person may encounter difficulties and challenges, but he or she should continue in trying until success is achieved.
Being a doctor and giving free checkups to people who cannot afford them is my life’s goal. I am aware that my goal is challenging, but in order to succeed, I must put in a lot of effort. The construction of a free medical facility in the village to offer free medical programmes to the residents is my greatest accomplishment as a doctor.
Thus, having a purpose helps in maintaining concentration and achieving goals. You will succeed if you have a good plan, a positive mindset, and carry out your aim.

Different persons have different aims in life. Somebody desires power, somebody wants wealth and somebody craves for honor and high dignity in the society. Again, somebody wants to be an engineer, somebody aspires to be a teacher and somebody wants to be a doctor and so on. This choice of profession depends on one’s taste, aptitude and intensity of desire. But it is not easy to fix up an aim in life. I think all human beings feel the same prick of “To be or not to be ” i.e. dilemma while choosing the aim in life as does Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Course to qualify myself as a good teacher. In fact, I shall vest my all-out efforts to enkindle the light of edification in the minds of people. I shall leave no stone unturned to materialize my dream of being a successful teacher. I do believe like Robert Frost :

My aim in life | an essay for 2nd year students.

My Aim in life
What makes life dreary is the want of motive .
To live without ambitions and desires is impossible. Everybody has his own dreams and goals to fulfill in his future life. The aim is significant in life to bring all the energies to one point. It is like a guiding star. It provides directions for our attempts. As Robert Browning says:
The aim, if reached or not makes a great life.
It is our desires and ambitions, which give us the stimulus to work and act. They are the main source of inspiration. We must select our future career keeping in view our taste, temperament, and ability. A prince may have a dream to be a king and a king may have the aim to be an emperor.

There are as many aims as men. Some want to be doctors. Others to be engineers. Some wish to be civil and military officers. Others to be poets and writers. As far as my aim in life is concerned. I desire to become a professor of English.
Teaching is not a paying profession. Teachers are the low-paying community all over the world. Their services are not considered. That is why this becomes the cause of low pay. There are many reasons that I choose this profession of teaching.
First, teaching is not a paying profession. Teachers all over the world are those who teach others. To me, this profession is the only profession in which a man can serve his nation in the best possible manner.
Engineering may build grand buildings, roads, and massive dams. Doctors may become the cause of life or a cause of death for patients. Civil and military officers may boast of their services to the nation. However, could they be so without the guidance of their teachers?
A teacher is an engineer maker, a doctor maker, and an officer maker. He is like a ladder, which remains at its place but helps others to climb higher and higher. It is only the men that glorify the nation. These men are made in the teaching institution.
Secondly, I am suited to this profession. I am fond of reading and teaching. I feel happiness in solving problems and explaining them to others. By adopting the profession, I will be able to lead a life of learning.
Thirdly, some persons may ask if I want to be a professor, then why a professor of English. The answer is that English literature is my favorite subject. A man can serve his nation well if he is interested in his work and only then, he can inspire his students.

Realization of such a noble ambition is possible only when a man devotes all his time to studies. Keeping this in view, I work hard and make an intensive study of English literature. Whatever, others think of my aim, I am contented with it.it is according to my taste and nature. As Wordsworth says.
A noble aim faithfully kept, is a noble deed.

‘Learning To Swim At 24 Taught Me An Important Life Lesson’
Assistant editor Naydeline Mejia shares how she came to peace with the water.
It was the summer of 2018. My sister, cousin, and I were aboard a motorboat with seven other wide-eyed tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunken statues off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. As we pulled away from the beach, I watched the celeste-hued water transform into a midnight blue and realized I could no longer rely on my fragile safety net—the knowledge that I’d be able to see my feet on the ocean floor. This was deep sea.
After about 15 minutes, our captain stopped the vessel and began to distribute the essentials alongside his assistant: life jackets, flippers, and goggles.
“Anyone who wants to get in and see the statues, now’s your chance,” he announced in Spanish, our shared mother tongue.
While I’m aware of the human body’s natural buoyancy in saltwater, I’m also conscious that the ocean will not hesitate to swallow one whole at the first sign of fear. In other words, I wasn’t about to risk it.

I’ve never been a particularly strong swimmer.
While I'd participated in an entire year of swimming lessons in the sixth grade—a rare opportunity for a low-income Black girl attending a West Bronx public school—sometime between the start of puberty and the beginning of adulthood, I had become increasingly aware of my own mortality. For me, this awareness largely manifested in a fear of drowning. When it comes to water-based activities, I prefer to stand comfortably in the shallow end.
And so, one by one, my boat mates made their way into the water. But I stayed onboard. As my family members and the other tourists followed the captain to see the life-sized sculptures which sat 30 feet under the surface, I began to viciously sob—failing miserably to hide my shame from the deckhand watching me as I swallowed my own salty tears.

I’ve always felt a deep connection to bodies of water . Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I search for a waterfront—a rarity in my concrete jungle home of New York City. My affinity also makes sense, since being in or near water has been linked to a reduction in stress, alleviated anxiety, and a boost in overall mood, according to licensed therapist Shontel Cargill, LMFT.
Yet, the visceral pain I felt that day from not being able to jump freely into the water is not something even I truly grasp. It felt like I’d tapped into a deep source within me—an ancestral struggle, almost. It was like I could hear the synchronous wails produced by my collective bloodline, begging for freedom from the forces that kept them shackled to the island of La Española—fearing yet worshiping the water gods.
It’s a common racist trope that Black people can’t swim.
But it’s hard to ignore this one’s startling reality. Nearly 64 percent of African-American children have no to low swimming ability, compared to 45 percent of Hispanic children and 40 percent of Caucasian children, according to USA Swimming . Moreover, Black children drown at rates three times higher than white children, per the CDC .

And it's not just children who are affected. Black people, in general, drown at higher rates than any other demographic, says Paulana Lamonier, the founder and CEO of Black People Will Swim , a mission-based program empowering Black and brown people to be more confident in the water. I first learned about Paulana and her mission after reading a feature on her on CNBC , and knew that when I decided to begin my swim journey, it would be with her.
“The reason why it’s important for us to teach people these life-saving skills is simply that: because it is a life-saving skill,” she tells me. “We’re really giving people that chance to dream again; the chance and opportunity for freedom. When you’re on vacation, you no longer have to sit poolside—you don’t have to be scared to jump.”

Twenty minutes past noon on Saturday, May 20, 2023, I went to my first swim class.
I arrived at CUNY York College’s Health and Physical Education Building where classes for Black People Will Swim’s spring 2023 program were being held. By the time I reached the 25-meter swimming pool, class was already in session.
Paulana, a warm yet commandeering figure, was teaching the class, and invited me to join. As I slowly and awkwardly slid my way into the pool's shallow end, I took in the expressions around me. There was a variety of ages in our adult-beginner course, which was made up of all Black women. Young 20-somethings, like myself, women in their 30s and 40s, and even a few Aunties—elders, often mature women over the age of 50.
Our first lesson started with a breath. We were to learn how to breathe underwater.
One by one, Paulana went around asking each of us to hop down into a squat until our fingertips touched the pool floor. Once there, rather than sucking in air through our nostrils, we were to expel that air by blowing bubbles—holding in the remaining oxygen in our mouths. When my hands touched the bottom of that pool and I was surrounded by blue I felt—if only for a second—at home. If only I could breathe underwater , I thought, I would never leave .
“The water was like my getaway,” says Maritza McClendon , a 2004 Olympic silver medalist and the first Black female to make the U.S. Olympic swim team. “Every time I get in the water, I’m in my happy place—I’m in my element.”
McClendon—who, after being diagnosed with scoliosis, began swimming at the age of six per her doctor’s recommendation—has always found solace in the water, even when the pressures of competitive swimming weighed her down.
"When I got in the pool, it was like I went into an oasis and forgot about everything—it was just me and the water.”
As I re-emerged from the pool after that first drill, I suddenly became aware of my senses. The silence from being submerged disappeared, and I was met with the noises around me.

To my right, one of my classmates—an older woman perhaps in her mid-60s to early 70s—was holding onto the edge, quietly blowing bubbles to herself as the rest of the class moved onto the next lesson.
I pondered what experience may have caused her to develop this palpable fear, and ultimately lead her here today. I also wanted to grab her hand and walk her to the middle of the pool, so we could float together like two otters, holding on tight to ensure the other wouldn't float too far away, and she could share some of the joy I felt.
The truth is, part of the reason why many Black and brown Americans don’t know how to swim today is a result of racial and class discrimination.
“There were two times when swimming surged in popularity—at public swimming pools during the 1920s and 1930s and at suburban swim clubs during the 1950s and 1960s. In both cases, large numbers of white Americans had easy access to these pools, whereas racial discrimination severely restricted Black Americans’ access,” wrote Jeff Wiltse, a historian and author of Contested Waters: A Social History of Swimming Pools in America , in a 2014 paper published in the Journal of Sport and Social Issues .
The systemic impairing of Black Americans’ ability to swim—thanks to poorly maintained and unequal swimming pools, private clubs that barred Black members, and public pool closures in the wake of desegregation—meant that swimming became a “self-perpetuating recreational and sports culture” for white Americans, says Wiltse. Black communities struggled to literally and metaphorically get a foot in.
“[Swimming] is a predominantly white sport,” says McClendon. (FYI: Of the 331,228 USA Swimming members, less than 5 percent are Black or African American, according to the 2021 Membership Demographics Report .)
“Growing up, I was definitely one of the few at every single swim meet, and even on my swim team,” McClendon recounts. “As early as nine years old, I remember finishing a race in which I got first, and walking past a parent who said, ‘You should go back and do track or basketball. What are you doing here?’ Sort of questioning why I was in the sport. If anyone else would’ve won the race, they would’ve been congratulating them.”
While most of McClendon’s career spans the 1990s and early 2000s, she says instances like this still happen today.
I missed the next three weeks of classes, so by the time I walked into my second swim session, I felt energized yet daunted.
As soon as I got in the pool, I asked my classmates about their reasons for joining the Black People Will Swim program.
One woman shared that she wanted to learn how to swim because she’s the only one in her family that couldn't and she had a seven-month-old son: “If he’s drowning, I want to be able to save him,” she tells me.
The second woman I spoke to said almost drowning twice pushed her to want to learn.
Unsurprisingly, most of these reasons pertain to survival. Swimming , at the end of the day, is a skill needed to live; it’s an ability and privilege that so many take for granted.
At the start of that second class, I was anxious. I had missed so much during my time away, and we were at the point of the program where everyone was expected to navigate the 14-foot end of the pool. Our first lesson of the day: butterfly backstrokes. I tried my best to prolong my turn by generously offering that my other classmates go ahead of me, but eventually I had to go.

As I positioned my feet on the wall, held onto the edge of the pool, and laid my head back, I silently repeated to myself, You got this! You are a child of the water. You will not drown. “Ready?” asked the instructor who was teaching my class. With one deep breath, off I went.
As soon as I started kicking my feet and pushing the water forward with my arms, I was making headway. It felt so natural, like muscle memory. Perhaps those middle school swim lessons did teach me something. After about five strokes, I was ordered to stop so the next person could demonstrate if they were ready to move on to the next step.
Swimming is easy enough when you know you can safely land on your feet the moment you start to panic, but once the depth of the pool is above my own height (at 5'4"), I no longer feel at ease. So you can imagine my nervousness when the instructor said we were about to backstroke the entire 25-meter pool.
As I prepared for that feat on the wall, I recounted the memory of that fateful summer of 2018, when I was too afraid to jump off the boat without a lifejacket. Then there was another memory: 11-year-old Naydeline, unafraid to jump into the deep end. Instead, exhilarated by it.
“Ready?” asked the instructor.
Off I went, rapidly backstroking across that 25-meter pool. I was making headway, but as I reached the 12-meter mark, I stopped. I was beginning to swallow water, and the chlorine-tinged liquid filling my throat made me panic. I was no longer swimming, but sinking. I quickly grabbed the nearest lane rope to stabilize myself.
“What happened?” asked my instructor. “You were doing so well.”
“I panicked,” was all I could say. The intrusive thoughts had started to pour in as soon as I sensed the depth of the pool change from six feet to eight feet to 10 feet: You’re drowning, you’re drowning, you’re drowning , and my anxiety took over.
It took a few seconds to catch my breath, but then I turned to face the deep end of the pool. I realized there was no getting out of this—I had to keep going. With my instructor situated behind me to catch me if I began to drown, I shut my eyes and inhaled for three counts, exhaled for three counts, again and again. Ready?
I was off once more. I didn’t stop until I hit the end of the pool.
A month after the end of the swim program, I headed out on a trip to the island of Aruba.
The schedule was filled with walking tours, parasailing, and an exploration of one of the island’s many natural pools.

The author parasailing off a boat at Palm Beach, Aruba.
On the second to last day, we kayaked across a small portion of the Caribbean Sea to go snorkeling. There would be coral reefs, parrotfish, and lobsters. I opted out.
I wasn’t confident that I wouldn’t start to panic and drown. So, while the rest of my tour group and the instructor went ahead, I stayed seated on the dock. As I looked out at the expansive sea around me, noticing how the colors transitioned from celeste to navy, I breathed in deeply: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4 . I was trying my best not to cry.
Our reserved, yet warm tour guide had also stayed behind. He claimed he was tired of beautiful beaches and ocean views—they didn’t impress him, he said. After noticing that I had been sitting alone on the dock for what felt like half an hour, he came to sit next to me. I told him about my deep affinity for the sea, but also how much it terrified me.
“The trick to swimming,” he said, “is letting go of fear. […] The water will do most of the work for you. It’ll hold you up, but only if you let it. You must remain calm, and trust yourself.”
Perhaps that is the missing puzzle piece: trust. Trust in the water, but most importantly, trust in myself. Trust that I could keep myself alive, and the water would help me—if I let it.

My mother, the debutante Communist: An American family story of love, loss and J. Edgar Hoover
Her life was like a slowly unfolding, densely plotted thriller whose unfinished story we’re all still inside, by andrew o'hehir.
The story I want to tell you begins with a woman in a car in the middle of the night, in the middle of the last century. To be specific, it is late in 1951 or early in 1952, in the parking lot of an apartment complex in southeast Washington, D.C., across the Anacostia River from Capitol Hill. The woman is young and pretty, or at least she looks that way from here. In fact she is about 30, which nobody thought was especially young at the time. If she were reading this right now, she would curl her lip slightly and say, “Well, dear — Striking or handsome, perhaps. I was never pretty .”
We’ll stick to the facts: She has fair skin and strawberry blonde hair. She is an old-line WASP whose ancestry stretches back past the American Revolution, all the way to the Salem witch trials and the Mayflower . She grew up in an Arts & Crafts house on a leafy suburban street in Northern California , and attended a private school meant to produce marriageable young women who could play the piano and speak a little French. She was a sorority girl at Berkeley for about a year and a half — and even then, decades before that campus became famous for student activism, there were “radicals” handing out leaflets in Sproul Plaza.
She dropped out of college and moved across the country to join the labor movement, an experience that will inspire her, many years after the story I’m telling you now, to write a novel that was nominated for a Pulitzer and optioned by Hollywood. (No movie was ever made, as is so often the case.) She has upright posture and what would then have been described as “good breeding” and a “nice figure.” In other words, she bears many of the markers of wealth and privilege, although when we find her on this rainy night in the early '50s, she has no money to speak of.
What I’m saying is that in a number of ways this woman appears dramatically out of place among the men in this car. I can’t identify them all, but it’s likely they are all Jewish, all immigrants themselves or the children of immigrants, all raised in urban working-class neighborhoods by parents who spoke foreign languages and lived by making things or selling them.
There are at least three men in the car along with the young woman, probably four. It’s a rainy night but not especially cold; the windows are rolled up and the windshield is white with fog. Inside the car, the air is warm, damp and close. It smells of wet wool, body odor, cigarettes and heavy, half-digested dinners.
The CPUSA was like a secret inner clubhouse for the most dedicated people in the labor movement, people like the man she met and married not long after that.
If this sounds like a scene from a movie, front-loaded with potential sex or violence, that’s fair enough, although nobody’s getting shot or taking their clothes off on this particular night. It’s more like a scene from another kind of movie, a slowly unfolding, densely plotted American thriller whose unfinished story we’re all still inside, many years later.
The woman in the car is my mother, as I imagine you have figured out by now — or at least she will become my mother, a decade or so into the future and thousands of miles away. She is sitting in the front passenger seat. She is part of an impromptu jury or tribunal assembled to pass judgment on the man who is sitting in the middle of the back seat, crying.
My mother always used the word “trial” when she told this story, and when she wrote about it in her own unpublished memoir. I always assumed that was a dramatic invention or an imprecise metaphor, but it turns out that was almost certainly the word used at the time to describe this kangaroo-court proceeding. In any case, the outcome was foreordained: The crying man in the back seat, a pharmacist who ran a nearby drugstore, was to be declared a traitor to the working class and expelled from the Communist Party USA.
Yes, my mother was a Communist, to borrow a phrase that today, in 2023, you can buy through Etsy emblazoned on a water bottle, a baseball cap or an iPad case. She never held an official position within the Party leadership — which you may not be surprised to learn was almost entirely male — but it’s fair to say she was being groomed for one, more because of her improbable pedigree and her photogenic qualities than because of any ideological devotion or organizational ability.
In later years, she said she found the Party’s internal politics dreary and most of her fellow Communists tedious and pedantic. She joined up, to put it bluntly, because in the heady atmosphere of the Washington labor movement right after World War II, it was the cool thing to do.
The CPUSA was like a secret inner clubhouse for the most dedicated people in the labor movement, people like the man she met and married not long after that. He was a handsome journalist from Brooklyn named Mel Fiske (originally Emanuel Fishkin), who styled himself after the movie star Cesar Romero — or, less flatteringly, after Joseph Stalin — and had fought with the Marine Corps in the famously brutal Pacific campaign. For the anti-Communist crusaders then emerging on the American right, Mel was a troubling and paradoxical figure: a decorated combat veteran whose patriotism could not be disputed, but who was also a proud member of a purportedly subversive political movement.
By that point in the early 1950s, it was becoming a lot less fun to be an American Communist.
I doubt my mother ever made much headway in reading Marx or Lenin, or that Mel did either. She read modernist poetry; he favored the laborious historical-realist fiction deemed acceptable by the socialist left: John Dos Passos, Theodore Dreiser, Howard Fast. He cultivated a lifelong friendship with the writer John Sanford, who had published several acclaimed novels in the 1930s and ‘40s before the McCarthy-era blacklist essentially ended his career. (I mention that now because of something I had forgotten: Mel once wrote about Sanford for Salon.)
As I have suggested, the Communist Party’s commitment to equality for women was entirely theoretical, but its leaders intermittently perceived the propaganda value of a conspicuously non-Jewish, conventionally attractive woman who knew which fork to use for the fish course. My mother’s great triumph came as the impromptu leader of a “meat strike” among the wives of industrial workers in Cumberland, Maryland, which forced the company store to capitulate on price increases and led a local newspaper to describe her as “the Red redhead of Cumberland Gap.” On my living room wall, I have an enlarged print of a photograph published in the Washington Star, probably in 1948: She is leading a march against the Ku Klux Klan, wearing a sundress, heels and dark glasses. She is presumably pregnant with my big brother at the time, but doesn’t look it.
But let’s get back to the crying man in the car on that rainy night, which could be called an inciting incident. My mother, as she told the story, was disgusted by the cruelty and paranoia of that episode. By that point in the early 1950s, it was becoming a lot less fun to be an American Communist. Her brothers, my two uncles, neither of whom was politically active in any way, received visitors who told them they would have great difficulty finding any form of career-level employment as long as their sister kept doing what she was doing.
My mother and her husband faced a range of options that included going to jail, going to Europe or Mexico, or going “underground,” which meant abandoning your current life abruptly and establishing a new identity someplace where no one knew you, a difficult but not impossible task in those days. She chose none of the above. She left the Party, divorced her husband (who went underground for a while in upstate New York) and took their child — my older brother, then about 3 years old — to another city to build a different life.
That was more or less the official prehistory of my childhood, although I learned it only in bits and pieces over the years. But that version of the story has been so foreshortened that I think it skips over the most significant facts, not to mention the unanswered questions.
The woman we started out with in the front seat of that car was first a second-tier California debutante named Diana Farnham, then a prominent radical named Diana Fiske (or, to the FBI, "Mrs. Melvin Fishkin," a name she never used in her life) and then a teacher, poet and novelist named Diana O’Hehir. She led a remarkable life by anyone’s standards. She would cheerfully agree that her initial privilege had a lot to do with that: She grew up as the adored only daughter of, quite literally, an absent-minded Shakespeare professor, and if he was hardly the world’s most attentive father he gave her something not many women got in those days: the freedom and confidence to reinvent herself several times over and to narrate her own story on her own terms.
The climate of fear and anxiety created by the McCarthy years and the Stalin years — and by the uniquely American blend of arrogance and amnesia and maybe just by the perennial weakness of human nature — is still with us.
After leaving Washington and left-wing politics behind, she taught in a church school, became one of the first female graduate students at Johns Hopkins University, married another man (worlds apart from the first, although he too had working-class New York City roots), moved across the country, had a second child (that would be me), earned a PhD in her 40s, wrote a Pulitzer-nominated novel in her 60s and then, more than 30 years later, married her first husband, the formerly prominent Communist, all over again.
I have several things to say here. The first one is that this is an amazing but true love story. It’s impossible to write those words without sounding facetious, but, reader: This time they fit.
Another one is that the murk that we can feel hanging over those people in that car, even from this distance, never went away: The climate of fear and anxiety created by the McCarthy years and the Stalin years — and by the uniquely American blend of arrogance and amnesia and maybe just by the perennial weakness of human nature — is still with us. It affected my family so deeply that we all pretended not to feel it and never talked about it. It is painful to admit that even now. I assume that’s what is meant by the trendy psychological term “intergenerational trauma.”
I also think this story is about something much bigger than one oddball amalgamated WASP-Jewish-Irish family, although it’s fair to say that my family’s peculiar qualities are distinctively American, and more than a little symbolic. It’s about the more general and more systemic consequences of that historical trauma, which this society and this nation have never even tried to address honestly.
This story is obviously personal for me, even though I’m not in it. We all have histories that shaped us before we were born, and this is mine. To misquote Faulkner only slightly, the past, in America, is never really past. I feel it as a living presence when I hear the former president of the United States, who seems increasingly likely to be the next president as well, vow to “root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our Country.” It is tempting, and at least somewhat reasonable, to assume that as usual that person has no idea what any of those words mean, no notion of their historical resonance, and nowhere near the executive function to turn his fantasies into reality. But none of that is terribly comforting.
I feel it in a more intimate and ironic sense when I hear self-described American liberals — people I likely agree with on 90 percent of political issues — embrace the FBI and other instruments of the national security state as allies in the purported struggle between the forces of democracy and right-wing authoritarianism. Given my family’s experience and the experience of a great many other perceived dissidents, radicals or revolutionaries — most of whom have not looked like me, or shared my family’s obvious advantages — I cannot help but see that as a uniquely American variety of willful blindness and ignorance.
We all have histories that shaped us before we were born, and this is mine. To misquote Faulkner only slightly, the past, in America, is never really past.
My stepfather Mel’s FBI file, which he labored long and hard to acquire and is my most important source material, fills several banker’s boxes in the corner of my living room. It comprises hundreds of pages of documents, many of them heavily redacted, even years after the deaths of everyone involved. They include transcripts of private meetings attended by three or four people, copies of letters he wrote but never sent, and interviews with every employer who ever hired him and every landlord who ever rented him a room, along with speculative essays about his intentions and motivations. Several documents in his file were routed directly to the desk of J. Edgar Hoover — and if I told you what was in them and didn’t have the evidence, you wouldn’t believe me.
There is also a memo personally signed by Hoover in April 1949 and directed to the attorney general of the United States, "urgently" recommending "technical surveillance" on the apartment of "Melvin Fishkin and his wife" (her name is redacted), and describing them as "very prominent in the Communist movement." One of the facts noted by FBI agents was that Black people ("Negroes") were frequently seen visiting their apartment, which was deemed to be unusual.
At around the same time as the episode with the crying man in the car, a couple of years later, my mother had been nominated as lead organizer for the Communist Party in the District of Columbia. She may have held that title briefly, in fact; it’s not like there are personnel records to consult. But in her version of the story, she understood that she was at a crossroads in her life: She was disgusted with the Party and didn’t want the job, so she simply walked away. Not exactly a moral parable for the ages, but instructive enough in its way.
If the story I have told you so far feels a bit novelistic, well, it feels that way to me too. I know it’s true, in a general sense, but it’s also “based on a true story,” as they say.
I don’t actually know whether it was raining on that night in Washington, or what month it was, or how many people were in the car. I’m not quite sure what year it was either. My mother always placed it in 1952, which generally seemed to fit both historical events and her personal biography. But the documents in my stepfather's file appear to contradict that: FBI agents believed Mel and Diana had separated by the end of 1950, and their reports suggest that my mother's departure from the Communist Party was more gradual than sudden.
One possibility is that when the FBI questioned my mother, repeatedly and at length, about whether, when and why she had quit the Party and left her husband, she didn’t tell them the truth. (She is described in one memo as "not entirely cooperative.") Another possibility is that my mother borrowed or altered or embellished the tale of the weeping pharmacist, placing it in her story for maximum dramatic effect.
There is a third possibility which, understandably, I don’t much like but should acknowledge. It’s clear enough that those FBI agents tried to persuade or coerce my mother into providing them information — about Mel and others she knew in the Party — as the price of leaving her and her family alone. It's not clear whether they succeeded. But she was highly vulnerable, as a single mother with a young child who needed a job. And there's no question that happened to many other people, before and since — in the Communist Party and the labor movement, in the civil rights movement and the Black Panthers, in the anti-globalization movement and the eco-anarchist movement and the Palestinian solidarity movement and so on. (It also happened to the backwoods losers who wanted to kidnap the governor of Michigan, or at least said they did.) So, yeah, my mom could have been an informant. I’ll probably never know for sure.
As any journalist with real-world experience could have told you long before the dark insights of postwar philosophy made such concepts fashionable, truth is a slippery, ambiguous thing. It’s out there somewhere, but we don’t always find it, don’t always recognize it when we see it and very often don’t agree about what it means. That's not a new problem. So the last thing I will say here is that I believe this story is true — but then again, I’m the person telling it, so I would say that. It’s definitely not the kind of story where every question gets answered and every secret gets revealed. Are any of the stories we tell about our families, or about the past, or about America, ever like that?

Many West Bank Palestinians Are Being Forced Out of Their Villages. Is My Family Next?

By Ali Awad
Mr. Awad is a Palestinian writer living in the West Bank.
I was born in February 1998 in Tuba, a rural shepherding community of 80 Palestinian residents in the South Hebron Hills of the West Bank, where my family has lived for generations. Over the years we have suffered repeated attacks by Israeli settlers, part of an ongoing campaign to remove us from our land. Still, nothing prepared me for what our life has become since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7. In the last six weeks, the raids and harassment by settlers have become so intense that I do not know how much longer I and the other members of my community will be able to live here.
Under the cover of war, settlers have been storming villages in the West Bank, threatening Palestinians and destroying their homes and their livelihoods. International attention has been mostly focused on the atrocities in Israel and in Gaza, including the internal displacement of more than half of the population of the Gaza Strip.
In the West Bank, increasingly violent assaults on villages have forced at least 16 Palestinian communities — more than 1,000 people — to flee their homes since Oct. 7. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, settlers have attacked Palestinians in more than 250 incidents in the West Bank. So far, 200 Palestinians have been killed , eight by settlers and the others during clashes with Israeli forces.
In my village and in other villages around us, settlers have been raiding homes and harassing us relentlessly, sometimes multiple times a day . Less than a week into the war, according to a video published by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, an armed settler came into At-Tuwani village in the South Hebron Hills, approached a group of unarmed Palestinians walking after Friday Prayers and shot one of them in the abdomen from point-blank range. Ten minutes down the road, in Susya, villagers said that settlers threatened to shoot residents if they did not evacuate their homes within 24 hours. On Oct. 30, settlers set fire to several homes in Khirbet a-Safai, a village less than a mile east of Tuba. And residents in the neighboring village to the west, Umm al-Khair, told human rights activists that armed settlers in uniform held people there at gunpoint and forced them to condemn Hamas and promise to raise Israeli flags in the village or they would be murdered.
For those of us in Tuba, this wave of attacks is part of a long string of attempts to force us to leave our homes. And it’s not only the settlers who want us out: Successive Israeli governments have also tried to get rid of us over the last decades.
In the early 1980s our village, along with a group of others in an area called Masafer Yatta, was designated by the military as Firing Zone 918 , land that Israel decided it wanted for training its forces (A government document indicates that there was an intention to displace residents living in the area.) We have been fighting for the right to remain on our land ever since. We live in Area C of the West Bank, which means the Israeli military has complete civil and security control over our lives. Israel has tried various tactics to get us to leave, including enacting policies that prevent us from building homes in our own village and not allowing us to be connected to the main electrical grid or water infrastructure.
Sometimes it’s been much less subtle: In November 1999, when I was a year old, the Israeli military loaded all of Tuba’s residents and livestock onto trucks and dumped us on the side of the road several miles away. We spent the following months crowded in makeshift tents, fighting to shelter ourselves and our livestock from the cold winter rain. We were eventually allowed to return to our village “temporarily,” pending a final court decision.
Settlers from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on — built near Tuba and partly on private Palestinian land not long after we returned — have done their share as well. In 2002 they cut off the main road that connected Tuba to the surrounding villages, including the children’s closest school and the city of Yatta, where we buy all of our food and medical supplies.
Settlers have also resorted to violence, some of it directed at my family. We believe it was nearby settlers who stabbed my uncle , attacked my cousins with stones and, as I’ve written before, set fire to a year’s worth of food for our flocks of sheep .
Throughout it all, we had been awaiting the final ruling from the Israeli high court about whether the Israeli military could force us to evacuate. Then, last year, the court ruled in favor of the state, allowing Israel to evict about 1,200 Palestinians, including those in my village. We have remained steadfast in the face of this pressure and refuse to abandon our land and our traditional way of life. But in recent weeks, attacks by settlers have rattled our resolve.
We have always felt that the work of the military, which demolishes our houses and prevents our ability to move freely, was intimately intertwined with and reinforced by harassment from settlers. However, since the war started more than a month ago, the settlers and soldiers in the region seemed to have fused into one entity , ending whatever semblance of distance existed between these two violent systems. Settlers whom we recognize from years of harassment in our villages have suddenly become soldiers, as reservists or as part of Itamar Ben-Gvir’s civilian security teams . Army reservists who are new to the area are apparently now taking their orders from local settler-soldiers or security teams. Together they patrol our communities with their M16s and threaten anyone who tries to bring his flock to graze or leave the village for work or errands.
In Tuba, as in nearby villages, settlers have also targeted the water systems and solar panels we have built and are entirely dependent on, as if to remind us of our vulnerability. They are clearly taking advantage of this moment to make our lives unlivable, and we have no reason to believe that, especially during a state of war, any of the violence we are experiencing in our communities will slow or stop soon. Local Israeli authorities say they are investigating some of the more violent attacks, including the killings, but they are showing no signs of being able to control them, and in fact, government ministers are fanning the flames .
In the last five weeks alone, residents from five other villages in the South Hebron Hills have been forced to pack up and flee from their homes. If the situation doesn’t change, I worry that Tuba will be next. As a letter signed by 30 nongovernmental Israeli human rights organizations recently stated , “The only way to stop this forcible transfer in the West Bank is a clear, strong and direct intervention by the international community.”
Since I can remember, life in Tuba has been difficult, but it has also always been full of beauty and calm. It is the life my family has known for generations, and the traditional lifestyle we live is deeply connected to the land around us and the animals we care for. The hillsides are stamped with our footsteps and those of our flocks, the rocks on the top of the hill neatly arranged so we can watch the sunset over the desert. But the fear we feel, in Tuba and across Area C, now hangs heavy over this landscape. I don’t know if we will be able to stand it.
