The IELTS writing exam is split into two parts and task 2 is worth 66% of your score.

The IELTS writing task 2 is an essay writing task that assesses your ability to express and develop an argument in response to a given topic.

You are allocated 40 minutes to write it.

On the official British Council site there are documents that state your essay must contain at least 250 words, however, in the official criteria, there is no mention of 250 words.

The basic structure for IELTS writing task 2 in the IELTS exam is as follows:

Introduction : Be sure to state the question in your own words in your introduction so that you introduce the topic of your task 2. Task 2 statements are often a paraphrasing of the initial question.
Support your opinion : Once you have made your opinion clear, you have to provide facts to justify your choice
State the opposing point of you . You do not have to persuade the examiner about the opposing opinion, but it is important to state what it is.
Summarise your opinion.

This kind of pressure might bring resentment in their mind.

In conclusion, I believe, the notion of a teenager doing unpaid work is indeed good but proper monitoring and care should be given to avoid untoward consequences.

According to me, these arguments need proper scrutinization before forming an opinion.

To begin with, there are many advantages of conferring rewards to children. First of all, appreciation and verbal praise can have a magical impact on the behavior of the children because when they are appreciated for good conduct they come to know about the value of good behavior and try to continue with that. The more they brim with positive comments, the more they are confident. On the other hand, children who are subjected to artificial physical punishment are seen with a lack of self-confidence. A survey conducted on the behavior of children revealed that a child exposed to punitive actions by parents is more aggressive and furious than others of his age. Hence beatings of a child can never be fruitful.

On the contrary, there is no denying the fact that training the notorious and ferocious mind is a hard nut to crack because it is true that the rod is the only logic for fools. Moreover, some children repeat mistakes even after being warned and punished, this type of stubbornness forces parents and guardians to give them beatings. Needless to say, over-pampering may have an adverse effect on children. In this present scenario, parents have one or two children and this pampering distracts them away from their path.

To begin with, there are many reasons why children should have competional values. Firstly, competition motivates youngsters to accelerate their efforts to attain a higher level in education and in other activities. They start working hard to compete with others and understand the value of hard work. This dedication and hard work help them to stand first everywhere. Secondly, competional values inculcate self-confidence and self-independence in children. When they participate in activities and compete with others, they are more likely to have a feeling of self-achievement and fulfillment. They feel worthy and provide them balanced and peaceful mind. They tend to become self-reliant and that results in the best decision-making ability in them. Moreover, a sense of completion is the need of the hour. Undoubtedly, in the modern era, people their childhood till adults, face competition For example- in school, there are dance competitions, race competitions, and poem competitions and when they become adults, they face competition in taking a job while taking admission in college and even face competitive in an exam. Thus, a value is highly required.

On the other hand, it is needless to say how important is it to inculcate the value of cooperation. This is the only feeling by which a child can learn teamwork, team spirit, co-existence, tolerance, and patience. Moreover, if history is seen it becomes quite evident that the well-known icons of the society are only those who had a helping and sacrificing attitude. A self-centered human being cannot earn fame in society. Secondly, incessant preaching for competition may result in rivalry between the peer group and others. These rival feelings take no time in turning in to jealousy and personal grudges. A heart full of jealousy for others can never hold good for themselves and for others.

To conclude, after gauging both, competitional and cooperative values, I feel that both values have their own importance. Thus, a child should be brought up by imparting both equally.

Mesmerizing sculptures and beautifully engraved paintings by renowned artists adorn the beauty of the museums and attract tourists. Undoubtedly, these tourists are the greatest source of revenue income. These tourists throng in large numbers on these historical places and monuments that help to promote local handicrafts, resulting in providing income to the small-scale industries. Secondly, art is the cultural and historical reflection of every country. It is the real asset of every country that brings uniqueness and pride to every country and if a fund is not allocated by the government then it will be difficult to keep this alive.

However, some opponents of art say that spending money by a government on art hampers the development of the country in regards to good infrastructure, road system, efficient transport system, and medical facilities. Moreover, allocating money to education and medical facilities definitely lessens the literacy rate and increases the being of the nation which helps a country to grow.

First of all, if they are free from any suppression that helps them to unveil all the social issues of the society without any fear. They expose the cancerous spot and request that society uproot that. Any type of confinement will not let them express their thoughts. Secondly, these creative artists are the nerve of every nation because of their extraordinary skills; if they work freely they, undoubtedly, have the potential to make a masterpiece that brings recognition to every country on the map of the world.

However, I feel that full autonomy may have an adverse effect on the individual and on society because many times artists are seen painting an objectionable picture, adding any anti-social dialogue in the films that results in communal riots and hurts the sentiments of the people. These types of acts cost the lives of the people. For example, once in the popular film, some Hindu gods are shown begging. This film has not only brought criticism by the Hindu society but also sparked communal riots that have ended up in the demise of some people. Therefore, they should not be given full freedom.

To sum up, although artists are required to be given full liberty to explore their creativity yet government should ensure that that very act may not hurt others' feelings.

It is one of the most demanded skills for a job in every sector. If they spend most of their time in learning art they will not be able to face the cut-throat competition of this scenario. Moreover, the knowledge of essential subjects like math, and science is highly required in every field. That kind of respect is no less than a flourished career. To conclude, in my view, the selection of the subjects should be left to the students in which they are interested because that very interest helps them to grow in their life.

Moreover, polished communication skills have become a need for the hour of the cutthroat competitive world.

However, it is also a fact that going to school, doing homework, and taking part in extra-curricular activities is itself a time-consuming activity for students. If they are exposed to regular language teaching sessions that will make them pressurized and psychological illness. This type of burden will hamper their physical, mental, and psychological growth.

To conclude, even though, teaching a foreign language may aggravate their existing burden preparing the young mind for further survival has become mandatory by imparting linguistic skills.

11) Most school offers some type of physical education program to their students. Why is it important? Should physical education classes be required or optional?

Physical education programs are having paramount importance in a school curriculum, therefore, there have been a number of opinions, that physical education should be compulsory because of its mental and physical health benefits for a student. However, some oppose it. I will discuss both types of opinions before a conclusion.

To begin with, undoubtedly, it has been proved that physical activities are part and parcel of healthy life. Students who are exposed to these types of physical exercises can increase their stamina and resistance power. According to medical science, the Strong immune system helps to prevent certain diseases like diabetes, obesity, and indigestion. It not only improves the stamina of the body but also makes one mentally strong. Besides that, A recent study has revealed that indulgence in these activities does not let the students sneak time for electronic gadgets.

Furthermore, physical programs are very helpful in inculcating the values of team spirit, cooperation, and coexistence. Therefore, the array of benefits makes it an inevitable part of the school’s curriculum…

On the other hand, there are situations and certain circumstances when a physical program needs to be sacrificed. Students with certain disabilities and illnesses should not be forced to be part of this. Their impairments prevent them from being active and physically enthusiastic. Indeed, there is the requirement to have it optional but it is also imperative to understand that they should be equipped with any other educational aspects like computer numeracy and soft skills.

In conclusion, physical education should not be optional since it provides physical and mental growth to a student but the circumstances of impaired candidates should be kept in view.

Note : To address each and every question in a statement is highly advisable for the high score.

12) What are the main reasons and solutions for re-offend?

Every country has its own laws to combat crime and criminals. However, nowadays, it is quite apparent that many criminals repeat crimes even after being punished. It has really become a matter of concern because of multiple reasons and according to me, this kind of problem should be addressed immediately.

To start with, undoubtedly, these criminals are influenced by many reasons like social isolation, unemployment, psychological disabilities, and lack of education. Unfortunately, they are subjected to humiliation very frequently by society people which disturbs them mentally and puts them in a constant state of depression. The imbalanced mental condition never lets them get rid of a criminal record. Moreover, their past criminal background leaves them in the lurch of unemployment. While finding no way to meet their both ends, they start following the same path of destruction. Lack of knowledge and skills is the other contributing factor.

It is true that there is no problem without the solution. The government should get up from a long slumber and initiate rehabilitation programs for them in which they should be given vocational training for self-employment. The other sustainable approach is psychological nourishment where they can be exposed to regular spiritual and religious lectures. That will help them to keep them away from criminal activities. Moreover, the individual should do something on the grassroots level by remaining sympathetic towards them as Gandhi Ji said; Hate the sin, not the sinner.

Indeed, the aforesaid measures are highly required to curb this problem as a stitch on time saves nine.

Note : Organize ideas into separate paragraphs. You will lose points if you do not divide your essay into paragraphs.

13) Every year several languages die out. Some people think that this is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Language is the best way of communication. However, it is seen that many languages have disappeared in this modern era. There are people who believe that it will be convenient if there are fewer languages across the globe. I also support this opinion to a greater extent.

To start with, in the justification of my notion, first of all, the fewer the languages, the easier the communication. There will be no language barrier and exchange of ideas among people which will ultimately help in developing harmonious relationships. Besides that, it will not only result in a flourished relationship among the masses but also make political relations strong as there will be more chances of exchanging scientific research and invention.

Moreover, having fewer languages will prove a boon for students and businessmen. Survival in other countries will be convenient. Hence, the disappearance of certain languages seems to have a more positive impact on the world.

However, to some extent, it is an irrefutable fact that language diversity shows the richness of culture and tradition. Fewer languages mean less linguistic skills. These languages are the identity of certain communities and tribes because languages are closely associated with the culture of individuals and the devastation of these vernacular languages will take a toll on diverse cultures.

To sum up, although, it seems to be necessary to save regional languages the declining barriers of languages will result in good psychological relationships among people.

14) Some people say that the Government should break down all the historic buildings and replace them with modern buildings. Do you agree or disagree?

It is an undeniable fact that every country’s monuments and historic sites are their heritage. Surprisingly, there are some who feel it is less valued and want the government to pull it down. In my opinion, these are the greatest assets of every country and deserve respectful attitudes by citizens.

To embark on, in the justification of my notion, every country has its own cultural history that exhibits old civilization. These historic sites are priceless and irreplaceable. This is the only way to appraise the next generation about our ancestors and their sacrifices. Moreover, visiting these locations will help us to learn from our ancestor’s lapse and provide a better course of action.

Furthermore, these locations are the best source of revenue income for the government. Tourists visit different places and their spending helps the government to improve the Infrastructure of the country. Moreover, tourists show their interest in purchasing handicrafts which results in the growth of a small-scale industry. It increases the flow of foreign money. Above all questions, it is quite apparent that tourist visits lead to good bonding among people across the world.

In conclusion, I feel that preserving historical sites means saving the history of the country. It has Paramount importance because of its array of benefits for existing and forthcoming generations.

These IELTS writing questions are examples of essay questions given in the IELTS exam for Task 2.

The IELTS essay topics have been divided into common IELTS writing topics and many have model answers.

Culture and Traditions

Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead.

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

It is inevitable that as technology advances, traditional cultures will be lost. It seems that we cannot have these two things together.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There are many types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important and should it be preserved or is international music that is heard everywhere nowadays more useful to a society?

Many old buildings protected by law are part of a nation’s history. Some people think they should be knocked down and replaced by news ones.

How important is it to maintain old buildings?

Should history stand in the way of progress?

Some people believe the aim of university education is to help graduates get better jobs. Others believe there are much wider benefits of university education for both individuals and society.

Education is not a luxury, but a basic human right and as such should be free for everyone irrespective of personal wealth.

Some people think that children's free time must include educational activities otherwise they will waste their time.

What is your opinion?

Formal examinations are the only effective way to assess a student's performance. Continual assessment such as course work and projects is not a satisfactory way to do this.

IELTS Writing Task 2: 8 steps towards a band 8

In IELTS Writing Task 2, you will need to write an essay. Let our IELTS Experts walk you through 8 steps that can help you get a band 8. Take a closer look at the assessment criteria, how to structure your essay and common mistakes to avoid.

Step 1: answer is relevant to the question, step 2: answer all parts of the question, step 3: organise your essay logically, with clear progression using linking phrases, step 4: organise your essays into paragraphs, step 5: use less common vocabulary and spell it correctly, step 6: don’t use memorised language, phrases or examples, step 7: use a variety of complex sentence structures, step 8: checklist, is ielts writing hard, ielts writing for beginners.

To achieve a band 8 in IELTS Writing Task 2 , you will need to produce an essay that contains all the positive features contained in the band 8 writing assessment criteria. Let's take a look at these in the table below.

Using the band descriptors as a guide we are going to go through the 8 steps to get you on your way to a band 8 in Writing Task 2.

We will start with the task response before moving through all the criteria to show you what an examiner will be looking for in your response.

Answer what you have been asked in the question. Don’t produce an essay that is close to a topic you have previously prepared. Make sure your examples and ideas are relevant. If you generalise too much and are not specific enough this will affect how your ideas are presented to the examiner.

Make sure your ideas are directly related to the question 

Use ideas and examples that you are familiar with, and that relate directly to the topic

Extend your answer to include a number of ideas that will support the question.

Don't:

Include irrelevant information 

Over-generalise 

Produce a memorised essay

Present ‘recent’ research or statistics related to the topic “At least 41% of all men…”

You must read the question carefully and decide how many parts are in it. You must answer all parts of the question to reach a band 6 or higher.

Let’s look at some example IELTS question prompts and see how many parts are in each, if you need to present your opinion. Remember, it is very important to present a clear position when answering the statement to show that you understand the question being asked and to keep that position clear throughout the essay.

Read the question carefully and decide how many parts are in it

Present your opinion and support it throughout the whole essay

If asked to present both views, make sure each view is presented equally (similar paragraph length)

Watch for plurals. If you are asked to give ‘advantages’, you must present a minimum of 2

Watch for ‘and’. You may need to comment on more than one element

Write more than 250 words.

Don’t:

Ignore parts of the question

Assume that your opinion is clear, use the first person to ensure the examiner knows it’s your opinion ‘I think’

Tell the examiner what you are going to say and what you have said

Produce a short essay.

Ideas must be expressed and ordered clearly - starting with an introduction and moving through to a conclusion.

If you are asked to present both views and your opinion, state your opinion at the beginning of the essay and then move on to present both views. You can then come back to your own opinion and then conclude the essay. This is a logical way to present these ideas.

Use a range of linking words and phrases, but don’t overuse them

Use adverbial phrases, rather than single basic linkers

Use referencing and substitution to avoid repetition (this/them/the issue/the problem)

Use punctuation to make your writing coherent

Make sure your ideas are sequenced correctly

Make sure your ideas are logical and easy to follow

Use a separate paragraph for the introduction and the conclusion 

Use one paragraph for each idea or topic area.

Overuse basic linking words like firstly (instead, try using ‘The first reason for/ The primary reason for this’)

Start every sentence with a linker (Try to put it in the middle of a sentence. E.g. “Some people believe, however, that individuals must also take responsibility for the environment” or “I believe, on the other hand, that individuals do have a responsibility to…”)

Use numbers, symbols or abbreviations (1, 2, etc, &, +)

Use headings or subheadings

Underline words or phrases

Use one-sentence paragraphs 

Start every sentence with a linking device.

Use paragraphs to organise your essay into clear parts. Make sure each paragraph contains a clear and developed topic with a minimum of two sentences.

You can use the acronym “PEEL” when writing your essay:

Point – introduce your topic or topic sentence

Example – an example that supports your point

Explain – why this evidence supports your point

Link – transition to the next topic or paragraph

You must use enough paragraphs to clearly show a structured response. This will show that you can organise and present your thoughts and ideas logically.

Here are some ideas on how many paragraphs you could include in an essay:

Use paragraphs

Use linkers between and within your paragraphs

Leave a space between each paragraph (a line)

Use a paragraph for each topic

Use an introduction and a conclusion.

Don't

Use single-sentence paragraphs

Use very long paragraphs that cover a whole page (IELTS on paper)

You will see in the band descriptors that a band 8 writer skillfully uses uncommon lexical items. When we learn a language, we use common and uncommon terms. Common terms are words and phrases we use every day to refer to personal experience and daily habits. Uncommon terms are used when we discuss specific topics or when we use idiomatic language (phrasal verbs).

Words that are old-fashioned and not used in everyday speech should not be used. If you choose a synonym, the meaning must be the same and must not alter the idea being presented. For example, adolescent/teenager have close meaning and can be used interchangeably, however, toddler/baby have quite different meanings.

Collocation is also mentioned in band 8, and it is assumed that you know which words go together, and which words are suitable to use for different topics.

If you are discussing child crime, you could use the term ‘minor’ as this is a legal term used to describe children under the age of 18.

If you use phrasal verbs, make sure that you are using the correct preposition as it can change the meaning:

throw out/away = discard

throw up = vomit/get sick

Idioms (cultural language) should only be used if you understand them completely and if they fit the topic you are discussing.

Use precise word choices

Use language that we use in everyday speech

Use words that you understand

Use words and phrases that are related to the topic

Use collocation and phrasal verbs (words that go together naturally – environmental pollution | major issue | promising future)

Make spelling mistakes

Make typos

Mix up American and British spelling (You should use one or the other)

Use a word if you don’t understand it or cannot spell it.

Use imprecise words like ‘stuff/thing’

Use slang like ‘gonna’

Use old-fashioned language [the masses| denizens | myopic view | Hitherto]

Overuse synonyms, one is enough

Use idioms/clichés

Use contractions (can’t, doesn’t)

Don’t use any memorised language, phrases or examples throughout your essay. They are easy for examiners to spot and don’t demonstrate your ability to write fluently.

Overused phrases, idioms, proverbs and clichés should also be avoided, again, they are often used when speaking. These include phrases like:

The grass is always greener on the other side

Love is blind

Off the top of my head

Old is gold

A friend in need is a friend indeed

Additionally, the following terms should not be used when writing as they are vague and do not address a task appropriately. You should always be using clear language and make appropriate word choices that will express your ideas clearly.

At band 8 it is expected that you can use a wide range of structures accurately to present your ideas and opinion. Show the examiner that you can use a wide range of structures and make sure your sentences are error-free.

It is important to use a mix of complex and simple sentences. But remember, your complex sentences should not be long and complicated.

Your punctuation needs to be accurate, using capitalisation, commas and full stops correctly.

IELTS Task 2 Essays Understand the 5 Different Types

There are 5 main types of IELTS Task 2 essays:

1) Opinion Essays

2) Discussion Essays

3) Problem Solution Essays

4) Advantages & Disadvantages Essays

5) Double Question Essays

Most questions fit one of these categories. However, questions can be written in many different ways, which can make it difficult to determine which type they are.

On this page, I want to give you an overview of all 5 IELTS Task 2 essay types, with samples questions to help you recognise some of the different wording often used. I’ve also included a basic structure for each that you can use to as a guide for essay planning, a vital step in the writing process.

First, here’s the basic 4 part structure I recommend that you use for Task 2 essays:

1) Introduction

2) Main Body Paragraph 1

3) Main Body Paragraph 2

4) Conclusion

The sort of information you include in each of the 4 sections will vary depending on the question type and that’s what I’m now going to outline for you.

These easy to learn structures will enable you to quickly plan and write any IELTS Task 2 essay.

The structures below are not the only ones you could use but they are the ones I recommend because they’re simple and give proven results.

1) Opinion Essays

These are sometimes called ‘agree or disagree’ or ‘argumentative’ essays and are one of the most common types of IELTS Task 2 question.

The first part of the question will be a statement. You will then be asked to give your own opinion about the statement. Here is some typical wording that might be used:

What is your opinion?
Do you agree or disagree?
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Here is an example of each:

Choose one side of the argument.
State your opinion clearly in the introduction.
Keep the same opinion throughout the essay.
Give reasons why you hold this view.

It doesn’t matter which side of the argument you take or even that you agree with it. Choose the one you can develop the best argument for.

Don’t change your opinion part way through the essay and don’t give reasons for the opposing idea.

Essay Structure

1) Introduction

Paraphrase the question
Give your opinion
State two supporting reasons

2) Main body paragraph 1

Topic sentence – outline 1st reason for supporting this view
Explanation – explain this idea
Example – give an example

3) Main body paragraph 2

Topic sentence – outline 2nd reason for supporting this view
Summarise opinion and key reasons

2) Discussion Essays

In discussion essays, you have to discuss both sides of an argument. Usually, you will be asked for your own opinion as well.

The easiest way to approach this type of IELTS Task 2 question is to choose one point of view to agree with and one side to disagree with.

Here are 3 examples of discussion essay questions:

Develop both sides of the argument.
Talk about the view you don’t agree with first.

A big mistake many students make is to fully develop only one point of view. This leads to an unbalanced essay and a low score for task achievement.

It is easier to begin by discussing the opinion you don’t agree with and then present the reasons for your opposing view.

2) Main body paragraph 1 – Negative Viewpoint

Topic sentence – outline the view you don’t agree with
Explanation – explain why this view is held by some people

3) Main body paragraph 2 – Positive Viewpoint

Topic sentence – outline the view you do agree with
Summarise the key points and state your opinion

3) Problem Essays

These are sometimes called ‘causes and solutions’ or ‘problems and solutions’ essays. This type of IELTS Task 2 question starts with a statement, then asks you to discuss the problems or causes and the solutions.

Don’t list lots of causes and solutions.
Choose just one or two and develop them fully.
Be sure to link each problem/cause and its solution.

A common mistake is for candidates to list all the problems/causes and solutions they can think of, not necessarily linking them together. They also fail to explain any of them in detail and don’t include any examples.

The wording of this type of essay question can vary considerably. Here are 3 examples of problem essay questions:

State 1 key problem/cause and related solution

2) Main body paragraph 1 – Problem or Cause

Topic sentence – state the problem or cause
Explanation – give detail explaining the problem or cause

3) Main body paragraph 2 – Solution

Topic sentence – state the solution
Explanation – give detail explaining the solution

4) Advantages & Disadvantages Essays

The first part of the question will be a statement. You will be asked to write about both the advantages and disadvantages of the idea stated.

Here is some typical wording that might be used:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of….?
Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your opinion.

Here are 3 examples of advantages and disadvantages essay questions:

Each of these different types of questions fits into one of two slightly different essay structures. We’ll look at these in detail on the main IELTS Task 2 Advantages & Disadvantages Essays page. For now, I’ll give you the basic structure.

Outline the view or views stated the statement

2) Main body paragraph 1 – Advantage

Topic sentence – state 1 advantage
Explanation – give detail explaining the advantage
Result – state the result

3) Main body paragraph 2 – Disadvantage

Topic sentence – state 1 disadvantage
Explanation – give detail explaining the disadvantage
Summarise the key points
State your opinion if required

5) Double Question Essays

This type of IELTS Task 2 question is sometimes called a ‘direct question’ or ‘two questions’ essay. It has one statement with two different questions after it. The questions may or may not be linked.

You must answer both questions fully.
Don’t confuse it with an opinion or a discussion essay.
Be careful that you don’t end up with too many ideas to write about.

Here are 3 examples of double question essay questions:

Outline sentence – state your answer to both questions

2) Main body paragraph 1 – Answer question 1

Topic sentence – state your answer
Explanation – explain why you think this

3) Main body paragraph 2 – Answer question 2

Summarise both questions and answers
