Over the years, women have been getting less preferential treatment despite the positions they hold in their workplaces. Gender inequality is very common in the workplaces, and this is a serious issue that should not be overlooked by employers. Many women are bullied, ridiculed, threatened, sexually harassed, and unequally treated by their male counterparts because of the presence of gender inequality in the workplace. Inequality occurs in women because they are considered to be the weaker sex and precisely because they lack power and hold vulnerable and insecure positions in their workplaces. It is therefore essential for all employers to keep all women safe in their workplaces because gender inequality in the workplace can be detrimental to their safety, health, work, and can lead to serious legal implications.

Gender-based Discrimination and Harassment

Gender-based discrimination in the workplace is usually directed to women although men can also be subjected to gender inequality. Women are always disproportionately represented in low-paying jobs and often subjects to discrimination and harassment. Most working class women have become vulnerable to harassment and discrimination because of the systematic inequalities permitted in the workplaces. They are forced to endure the harassment because of the fear of losing their careers and jobs.

Harassment in the Workplace

Harassment in the workplace is one of the overt types of gender inequality and discrimination women face. It takes different forms but sexual harassment is the most egregious form of harassment experienced by women in their workplaces. Harassment in the workplace, specifically sexual harassment, can be quite detrimental to the health and safety of employees. Most women feel humiliated, frustrated, and angry when nothing is done at their workplace even after reporting harassment and discrimination. It is therefore important for employers to understand that workplace sexual harassment is real and ensure that the female workers are safe in their workplace.

Real-life Examples of Sexual Harassment

It is evident that women are largely sexually harassed as restaurant workers. An example is Donna, the woman in Behind the Kitchen Door who worked in a Creole restaurant in Los Angeles. The owner of the restaurant constantly harassed her and pressured her to have sex with him and when she turned him down, he demoted her (Jayaraman 142). Because of her gender, Donna had to deal with daily sexual comments about her body and this is a form of sexual harassment in the workplace. Another example is Yelena who confesses, “The general manager had been taking advantage of everyone, sexually harassing us at work every day" (Jayaraman 142). Yelena thought she had landed a good job that could sustain her only to have to endure sexual harassment at her workplace on a daily basis. Yelena says the manager “would kiss a woman's ear and make dirty comments all the time" (Jayaraman 144). Just like Yelena and Donna, many women face serious workplace discrimination and sexual harassment and it is time this should be stopped and those found guilty punished. However, it is unfortunate that many women endure sexual harassment in their workplace because they are more worried about losing their jobs.

Fear of Reporting

Most women will always fear to report any form of harassment or discrimination from their male counterparts in their workplaces because nothing much is done about the situation. For instance, in the case of Janelle Asselin, she reported Eddie Berganza, an editor in their workplace for sexual misconduct and instead of being punished, Eddie was promoted to an executive editor (Everyday health). Such cases make women fear to do the right thing, which is filing a case or a report because of the intimidation they will have to face for opening up. According to Herbst, Asselin confesses that “It was so demoralizing, I felt so unvalued by the company," and this is one of the main reasons why sexual assault remains unreported in many workplaces across the world because nothing is done (Everyday Health). Asselin and her colleague thought they did the right thing to report Eddie, but it is unfortunate that the company valued him more than the safety of their female workers despite being reported severally for sexual assault. Berganza was only fired after the women went public to protest about the issue on BuzzFeed.

The Negative Effects of Gender Inequality and Discrimination

To say gender inequality and discrimination is not a problem in the workplace is like arguing that bullying in schools is acceptable. The victims of harassment and gender inequality feel the effects and this can affect their work performance and even their personal lives. Most women who are sexually harassed at work tend to lose the motivation to work, and this affects their overall performance and some of them are even forced to resign from their jobs. It is important to recognize that gender inequality and discrimination exist rather than remaining mum about the issue. No one should be treated unfairly because of his or her gender. While we recognize gender discrimination and harassment can happen to people of both sexes, it is a predominant problem that happens to women in the workplaces and it should be stopped.

Addressing Gender Inequality in the Workplace

Gender inequality in workplaces has become a complex phenomenon that is prevalent in organizational structures, practices, and process. In fact, gender inequality is a serious issue that should not be overlooked. Several women are suffering in silence because they fear to report incidences of harassment and unequal treatment because of the intimidation they get afterward. Many of them even decide to quit their jobs just to be safe from the harassment and gender discrimination. Therefore, it is important for all employers to be responsible and ensure that such vices are not happening in the workplace by protecting the rights of women workers.

In the current society, there have been dramatic changes regarding gender discrimination in the workplace. Women have made huge steps within the workplace. However, inequality in terms of gender and race-ethnicity remains a major challenge. This gender inequality in the workplace is caused by the stereotyping of women. For instance, culturally, women have often played the role of housewives and caregivers. Such factors as education level, level of experience are among the factors that could bring about gender parity in the workplace but does not. For instance, there is a huge sum of women who have enrolled for bachelor degrees as compared to men (The Editorial Board). This means that higher number of women receive more degrees and even performing better and higher qualification. However, in society that is supposed to employ its employees and compensate them in terms of merit, women still earn less. In spite the dramatic development women have experienced in terms of education, they are still the most disadvantaged in the work environment. It is therefore clear that the current work environment does not depict equity for both men and women in the same jobs entitled to the same pay. One of the reasons why the education or experience success does not offer competitive edge for women can only be linked to gender and the way each gender is treated. There is a clear indication that workplace environment across the world is biased against women. The biasness is based on the stereotypical culture within the society and their anticipation for their actions. Women could be thought to be segregated from an initial position during the interview. Since an interviewer comes from a background where women are not tough, they are not expected to ask for high remuneration or ask questions. Socially, the term gender is not used to refer to the biological difference between men and women, but the roles that each of the sexes should play within the society. Therefore, based on this, the role of men is completely different from that of women making them completely varied economic and social beings. Based on these differences in roles, gender inequality in the workplace has arisen. One of the major issues arising from these differences in roles is pay gaps. The major assumption for the difference between men and women is the fact that women are supposed to attend familial responsibilities as compared to the work. Usually, women attend family responsibilities such as taking care of the child, a sick family member among others but not quite their work (Amott & Matthaei 184-192). Based on this, women often choose lower paying jobs so as that they have more flexible hours such that they end up spending less work hours as compared to men. Based on this argument, companies often maintain women at these low paying jobs so that they can remain as family caregivers and at the same time earn some income. In the current society, women are encouraged and supported to work in the same position as men yet they are not compensated as men holding the same position. To resolve the pay gap issue, organizations should take into consideration the family responsibility. This means that men and women could be remunerated the same amount of money for the same job position. Another major issue is the segregation in the workplace in terms of race. Despite this being a major challenge, it has dropped significantly from 1940s when blacks were discriminated. However, there is nothing to smile about since it is still evident that African American women, Asians and Hispanics are still underrepresented in different occupations that were considered feminine jobs. Additionally, in a research conducted, it is evident that being a woman is a bigger hindrance as compared to being a black. This is based on the fact that black men are fairly represented in various occupations as compared to women. The inequality in the workplace is also linked to a feeling that men are more superior to women. This brings about the issue of class whereby women are of lower class as compared to men. This means that they are entitled to lower pays and specific jobs. Generally, labor force hierarchy has grown dramatically in terms of race and gender. For instance, considering a position of a nurse what comes in the mind of an individual is a white woman; a doctor could probably be a white man; while a railroad porter could be a black man. Based on these explanations, it is evident that each job tends to be stereotypically thought to belong to specific gender, class and race (Williams 69-74). This makes it difficult for people to train into specific careers or even being considered into various positions of which they have qualifications. It is worth noting that race-sex stereotyping does bring out the issue of class in gender. Job structure is also a good product of sex-race stereotyping. For example, secretarial jobs were considered to be white women’s job and until today it is still considered so. On the other hand, clerk position was white’s men job and until date it is still considered man’s job. The advancement of technology has brought a lot of changes such as bringing about managements guide and created new jobs. However, division of labor in terms of gender is still strong. In terms of earnings, women earn only seventy five cent less for every dollar a man earns. Gendered organizations tend to favor men due to their masculinity values. This means that employees with masculine values and characteristics are considered for promotions to best positions. Making it worse, the issue of proportionality within the occupation is usually not considered. Both the white woman and woman of color are exposed to hostile environment at home and in the workplace. They are remunerated less as compared to men who do similar jobs. Worsening their situation, they are usually sexually harassed (Reskin 73-76). This forces them to remain in low paying and demeaning positions within organizations. There has been a lot of training and education and introduction of equality legislation in an attempt to eradicate this inequality in the workplace. Both white women and women of color have organized successful fights to be allowed into various occupations that were considered masculine. In conclusion, from the above discussion on gender inequality in the workplace, it is evident that gender, race-ethnicity and class are interconnected and defines the degree of inequality in the workplace. Gender is used to describe the different roles that different sexes should perform. Based on this, various tasks are considered to be the work of men while others for men. Highly paid jobs are considered masculine based on the assumption that they have to provide for their family. On the other hand, women are considered housewives and caregivers and are therefore often away from their job. Based on this assumption, they are therefore given lower position with low pay. This is one of the factors that have led to the continued pay gap between men and women. Race-ethnicity is observed in a situation where white women are offered better paying jobs as compared to the women of color. The inequality in the workplace is also linked to a feeling that men are more superior to women. This brings about the issue of class whereby women are of lower class as compared to men.

Our world has progressed over time in many aspects such as technologically, politically, and socially. The right to vote, equality in public areas, and freedom of speech and press common protected civil rights that exist today. However, there are still many subconscious aspects of inequality in society that often times go unnoticed or aren’t protested against as much. Men and women, though created equal at birth, are put into different spectrums based on society’s norms. So no matter how far we have progressed over time in terms of gender equality, differences still exist. This disparity in the gender inequality can clearly be seen in the workforce. Men tend to be paid more than women regardless of which field of profession. Though, there are several groups of people who are protesting regarding this issue, it’s still lacks a wide range of awareness of the problem which puts to rest many of the voices protesting it.

Often times people are proud and satisfied with how progressive we have become today in terms of civil rights issues. Compared to the 1950’s, when Martin Luther King Jr. started the civil rights movement, we have come far in providing equality to other races by not discriminating them lawfully in any manner. However, though the law demands not to discriminate against other races and humans, humans can almost never do complete justice to that. Discrimination is subconsciously engraved in to our society against women and other races. Women in the workplace face many forms discrimination such as holding a prominent position and equal pay. “According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, women earn 49 cents compared to every $1 men earn.”(Wilson). Also, often times women in less developed countries are expected to hand over a substantial amount of their salary over to their husbands. So essentially, women are paid less than men and then on top of that they also don’t have the freedom to have their own money. Regarding all this, one might wonder if maybe women are being paid fairly for what they’re capable of;maybe men are more skillful and productive and therefore they are paid more. However, that isn’t the case.

In fact, “There is not a problem with female achievement. Women have caught up with men in terms of education. In fact, in the United States and a number of other countries, women now actually surpass men in educational achievement.”(Josh) Women more often than not have higher educational achievement and have higher degrees and Phds than men do. It’s not due to the lack of educational skills that women in the workforce are being paid less, there are also several factors a women has to endure, such as pregnancy and childbirth. Often times women take on most of the caregiving responsibilities at home and therefore tend to struggle the balance between being an ideal mother and working woman. When woman don’t show up to work as often as men, they lose pay and there’s no proper system to help compensate that loss of pay. Even if there is, it’s not quite as efficient. Not that surprisingly, sad to state, “The wage gap typically translates into more than $10,000 per year in lost earnings for women”(Women’s Wages) Another form of discrimination that happens in the workforce besides the equal pay is that women tend to be promoted less than men which is a part of the reason as to why not many CEOs and managers are women. “…women make up less than 5 percent of CEOs and less than 10 percent of women are top earners in the S&P 500.”(Wilson)

This can be due to many reasons such as male prejudices and also lack of proper role models of women in the workplace. Male prejudices is something that not everyone possesses in today’s world but the fact can’t be denied that it still exists. Women are treated as if they’re not competent enough to handle large tasks so therefore they’re never assigned important tasks. This notion of women being more soft and nurturing rather than as a leader perhaps transfers from the household at home with women taking on the caregiving responsibilities instead of the men. “Women are roughly four times as likely as men to say they have been treated as if they were not competent because of their gender (23% of employed women versus 6% of men), and they are about three times as likely as men to say they have experienced repeated small slights at work because of their gender (16% versus 5%).”(Parker, Kim, and Funk) This prevents women from showing what they’re capable of and their prowess and so they’re not receiving the promotion in position that they are expecting.

As a matter of fact, more educated women are denied opportunities than less educated women. “Similarly, working women with a postgraduate degree are much more likely than their less-educated counterparts to say they have received less support from senior leaders than a man doing the same job (27% of postgraduate women, compared with 11% of women with bachelor’s degrees and 13% of women with less education).”(Parker, Kim, and Funk) This is probably due to the fear that more educated women would surpass the men if they were to be offered higher positions. These issues are all very important and must be addressed. And in order to make a significant impact on the issue more people must gain awareness of the problem in order to gain support the movement. “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” (King Jr.) As Dr. King said, it must be demanded by the women if they want change. One such form of spreading awareness on the issue is through the use of technology: social media.

Social media has a huge impact on the social issues today spreading awareness because it can expand exponentially in an efficient way. Another reason as to why social media is useful is that “…information technology today is used by such a wide variety of people that no one has a monopoly over how it is used or for what purpose.”(Kessler). Several issues that blew up over social media include the #Metoo campaign. Many people have realized the horrors of the movie industry and just to the extent sexual harassment is an issue which encouraged many women to come out in to the public and talk about their experiences. Not only does social media give a platform and power to women to talk about their opinions and experiences, it also allows for empathy to be created from people who would otherwise not care about the problem. For example, a person that doesn’t generally have a heart to care for equal pay or gender equality in the workforce, would empathize and perhaps change his view if he were to read real life experiences from victims of the problem.

Despite, being a great platform to raise awareness about gender equality in the workforce there certainly are many limitations. One being that third world countries often don’t have access to internet and so such issues won’t really reach them. In such circumstances, the media in the form of Tv and radio would be the only source of information for the most part. Other limitations that could exist include the fact that social media isn’t properly filtered with the content that’s being published by people. Though social media can empower and inform people regarding the issue about gender equality in the workforce and equal pay, it can also pave a path for negativity. There’s always two sides to a coin. Often times people express their feelings and ideas on a post through the comments section. Comments have the power to manipulate others and thus can cause a bias of opinions. So in addition to raising awareness and support for the issue, it fosters negativity. Another limitation at hand is the fact that social media is a mediator and doesn’t have an immediate or direct effect on the situation. A person won’t be able to change the equal pay issue just by liking or sharing a post. It’s a gradual process and requires someone with great empathy and leadership skills to properly implement social media as a tool and put efforts in to campaigning in real life for the issue. However, the benefits outweigh the negatives in terms of scale.

In conclusion, social media is a great platform to voice out and bring awareness to the public about gender inequality in the workplace, despite the limitations presented. However, one thing to note is that results are not going to be immediate and a socially responsible person is required to get the best results.

Many have tried to conceptualize the intersectionality between class, gender and the racial relations of inequality in the workplace, and although women have made great strides in the workplace in recent years we find that inequality continue to persist. According to a PEW Research, about four-in-ten working-women (42%) in the United States say they have faced discrimination on the job because of their gender. They report a broad array of personal experiences, ranging from earning less than male counterparts for doing the same job to being passed over for important assignments (PEW Research Center, 2017). Much of the discrimination felt by women have not only been in the social aspect, but in the professional aspect as well as stated by PEW .

Considerable portions of the miss conception stem from the thought that women were the ones to take care of the children and the home, while men were the breadwinners in the family. Women often take inferior compensating jobs as a tradeoff for flexible hours and often-spending lower working hours per week at their jobs than their male counterparts do. For the reason that women are linked to be the primary care givers in the home, they tend to kept lower paying occupations that are more flexible, allowing them to care for their family yet still retain an income earner to their homes. However, with the ever-changing times we find that parental roles have shifted dramatically. Fathers are now sharing the responsibilities of child care, which is allowing more and more women to pursue careers.

According to statistics from the Department of Labor of the United States of the “123 million women age 16 years and over, 58.6 percent or 72 million were labor force participants. In the end, women are projected to account for 51 percent of the increase in total labor force growth between 2008 and 2018” (U.S Department of Labor, 2010). For same reasons, gender inequality is an elusive subject, it has become frustrating to pin-point specific causes when developing theories. However, before we can begin to analyze this subject further we need to incorporate men in to the theoretical framework and how workplaces need to acclimate to people as a whole let it be men or a woman. We need to discuss the changing climate of the workforce and differential in treatment between male and female, diversity management in the workplace, and pay differentials between males and females.

Gender inequality within organizations can be viewed as a complex and elusive phenomenon. It is important to realize that much of gender discrimination comes from organizational practices stemming from the hiring process and human resources. Many of the policies in place affect the ability for hired, training, pay and the promotion prospects of women. Under set circumstances, human resource policies are inherently predisposition to exclude certain groups specifically women, despite their education, skills, performance or abilities to conduct the job. “For instance, if women are under-represented in a particular educational program or a particular job type and those credentials or previous job experience are required to be considered for selection, women are being systematically, albeit perhaps not intentionally, discriminated against. In another example, there is gender discrimination if a test is used in the selection battery for which greater gender differences emerge, than those that emerge for job performance ratings.

Thus, institutional discrimination can be present within various aspects of HR selection policy, and can negatively affect women’s work outcomes” (Hing, 2015). When trying to conceptualize the outcome of organizational Structures, processes, and practices on HR policy, the focus is on the link between institutional discrimination in organizational structures, processes, and practices that can lead to personal discrimination in HR practices (Appendix B). We see that organizational structures, processes, and practices are interconnected and may contribute to discrimination. Consequently, gender inequalities within elements, creates a self-reinforcing system that can propagate organizational discrimination leading to discrimination in HR policies, decision-making, and enforcement. In the diagram, it can also be seen that these relations between gender inequalities in the structures, processes, and practices and discrimination in HR practices can be multi-directional (Appendix B).

A good example of a systematic structure that reduces discrimination can be seen in the military. “The military gives us a good example of how to eliminate bias from the decision-making process as a whole, Human resources demands a consistent method for rating, ranking and qualifying talent. This kind of system would democratize employment by exposing any management bias and differential treatment between male and females in the workforce.” (McKinsey Global Institute., n.d.) Overall, the progress made within the workplace climate and differential in treatment between male and female cannot be undermined. However, undoubtedly there is a need for more changes to take effect to reduce the gap between genders.

Equally important when talking about inequality in the workplace we need to discuss the importance of diversity management. Unquestionably, the rapid growth of immigration and globalization in the workforce, has impacted the demographics at a fast-changing rate which leads to the importance of organizations to grasp the concept of strategically dealing with diversity. This topic deals not only with equal employment opportunities also known as color blindness, or fairness to ensure equal and fair treatment of minority groups but with reduction social inequalities in the workplace. Although the status quo for gender diversity is fascinating, progress towards equality is very slow, nonetheless, under this growth we find that the influence of Hispanic women in the workplace is one of the fastest growing in the U.S labor force.

According to Catalyst, between 1990 to 2001 the total employment of Latinas increased by 76 percent and is expected to increase a further 37 percent in the near future. (Catalyst, 2003) As we interpret these statistics we still see the impact of disparity in diversity in corporate America showing that “the percentage of corporate officers who were Latinas in the Fortune 500 was a miniscule 0.24% in 2002, up very slightly from their representation in 1999 – 21% (Catalyst, 2003) it is important to realize, that inequalities may also vary within groups due to educational level. The above examples show us that Latino women are making their presence known in the workforce, but on the other hand we see that their representation within high executive level jobs that growth is insignificant compare to their male counterparts.

Contribution by this minority group emphasizes the importance of modifying the inequality of gender diversity within economic world. Generally speaking economies would tend to have more to gain than to lose by hiring a diverse group of men and women, the multifaceted element that women bring to the workplace would balance individual and work life. Ultimately, further changes would need to be address by government in their policy making to truly make lead way on this subject.

Gender Discrimination, as the term signifies, is discrimination or discriminatory behaviour based on gender. The stereotypical mindset of people in the past has led to the discrimination that women face today. According to Kahle Wolfe, in 2015, women earned 83% of the income paid to men by working the same hours. Almost all women are not only discriminated against based on their salaries but also on their looks.

Further, most women are allowed to follow a certain dress code depending upon the work field and the dress women wear also decides their future career.

This dominant male society teaches males that women are weak and innocent. Thus women are mostly victims and are targeted in crimes. For example, In a large portion of the globe, women are blamed for rapes despite being victims because of their clothes. This society also portrays women as weaker and not eligible enough to take a stand for themselves, leading to the major destruction of women’s personalities as men are taught to let women down. This mindset of people nowadays is a major social justice issue leading to gender discrimination in society.

Further, gender-based discrimination is evident across the globe in a plethora of things, including sports, education, health and law. Every 1 out of 3 women in the world is abused in various forms at some point in their lives by men. This social evil is present in most parts of the world; in India, women are burnt to death if they are incapable of affording financial requirements; in Egypt, women are killed by society if they are sensed doing something unclean in or out of their families, whereas in South Africa baby girls are abandoned or killed as they are considered as burden for the family. Thus gender discrimination can be only eliminated from society by educating people about giving equal rights and respect to every gender.

My Experience

I remember one time when I was working as an intern at a small consulting firm. At the end of my internship, I was offered a full-time position. However, when I received the offer letter, I noticed that my male colleagues who were also being offered full-time positions had been offered a higher salary than me, even though we had all performed the same job duties during our internships.

I was frustrated and felt that I was being treated unfairly because of my gender. I decided to bring this issue to the attention of my supervisor, and after some negotiation, I was able to secure a salary that was equal to that of my male colleagues.

This experience taught me the importance of advocating for myself and not accepting inequality, and it also made me more aware of the ways in which gender bias can manifest in the workplace. I believe that it is important for individuals to speak up and take action when they see instances of gender inequality, and for organizations to make a conscious effort to promote gender equality and fairness in all aspects of their operations.
