Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the Dengue virus. In this case, the dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes – Aedes aegypti . Mosquitoes can survive and breed both inside and outside the house.

Health experts have known about dengue fever from more than 200 years. Dengue or dengue-like epidemics were reported throughout the 19 th and early 20 th centuries in America, southern Europe, north Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, Asia and Australia and various Islands in the Indian Ocean, the south and central Pacific and the Caribbean. It has steadily increased in both incidence and distribution over the past 40 years. Annually, it is estimated that there are 20 million cases of dengue infection, resulting in around 24,000 deaths. Dengue fever is a flu-like viral disease common throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world, mainly in urban and pre-urban areas. Today, it afflicts (cause physical pain and suffering) an estimated 50 million to 100 million in the tropics.

The symptoms of dengue fever are severe headache, pain in the muscles and joints, and rash that can be described as small red spots. Dengue fever is currently a cause of global concern. Statistics show that every year 400 million people are infected with dengue fever and 40,000 die. That is why students in the schools are often asked to write essays and paragraphs on the causes of dengue fever and how to prevent it. Dengue is caused by a virus and may occur in any part of the world where the carrier mosquitoes breed.

Areas of Prevalence: The potentially fatal fever is prevalent in parts of Asia, South and Central America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other nearby islands.

How It Spreads: The carrier of the fever in most endemic areas is the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The Asian tiger mosquito, A. albopictus, is another prominent carrier of the virus. A mosquito becomes infected only if it bites an infected individual during the first three days of the victim’s illness. It then requires 8 to 11 days to incubate the virus before the disease can be transmitted to another individual. Thereafter, the mosquito remains infected for life. The virus is injected into the skin of the victim through the saliva of the mosquito. The spread of dengue is especially unpredictable because there are four serotypes of the dengue virus. Infection with one type gives lifetime immunity from reinfection with that type of dengue. However, it does not prevent an individual from being infected by the other three types.

Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment: The symptoms are sudden onset, moderately high fever, excruciating joint pains, intense pain behind the eyes, the second rise in temperature after a brief remission, and particularly the type of rash and reduction in neutrophilic white blood cells. Dengue fever has no specific therapy. Therefore attention is given to relieving the symptoms. Temporary preventive measures must be taken to segregate suspected as well as diagnosed cases during their first three days of illness and by using mosquito screens and repellents to keep mosquitoes from biting more people.

Conclusion: Considering the hazard of this disease, it is necessary to control the spread of dengue fever. This requires the destruction of mosquitoes and their breeding places.

Dengue is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne disease, borne by Aedes mosquito. Tropical areas, like Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Southern China, Taiwan, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Mexico, Africa, Central and South America are the most vulnerable areas of the world where Dengue Fever is likely to occur. When someone is infected with dengue, he may not notice it immediately, since the symptoms usually start to appear after four to six days. Symptoms may include sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and mild bleeding. These symptoms can take a dangerous turn towards bleeding and death. People with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of contracting dengue fever. It damages the lymph and blood vessels, causes internal bleeding resulting in black vomiting, lowers platelets in the blood, and impairs digestion. Surprisingly, till today, there is no specific treatment for Dengue infection. Doctors generally suggest the infected people to take rest and drink plenty of fluids. If the situation worsens, the patient must be hospitalized. One of the effective ways to prevent Dengue Fever is to prevent bites by infected mosquitoes. We should keep in mind that currently there is no vaccine to prevent the disease for the general population from contracting it. The best way to lessen the risk of Dengue infection is to reduce the production of Aedes mosquito. We can do that by taking effective measures such as keeping our living places and neighborhoods clean. However, it is interesting to know that Aedes mosquito requires just one teaspoon of water to lay its eggs and for the larvae to fully develop into an adult mosquito. This means that Aedes mosquitoes can breed wherever little standing water is available. So, we must also get rid of clogged and accumulated water so that Aedes mosquitoes cannot breed.
