If you're wondering how to find the best lipstick for your skin tone—and dreading the process of trying dozens of options to figure it out—I have great news. There is a much better way to identify which shades work best with your complexion, and it's called color analysis, a stylist-approved technique for identifying your seasonal color palette.
I discovered this method six months ago, when a video on Jenna Ortega's color contrast happened upon my Instagram Explore page. I had never thought about color contrast and how it could impact the color combinations I should wear, let alone the ones I put on my face. But when I thought about it in terms of Ortega, it dawned on me: The actor's high color contrast is part of why she makes such a good Wednesday. She truly shines in black and white, and cool-toned makeup like the infamous Wednesday lipstick.
I forwarded the video to my best friend and my sister, vowed to change my makeup and wardrobe, and smashed that “follow” button faster than ever before. Now I've convinced the creator behind said video, certified image consultant and color analyst Nathalia Eugenio Vaz , to share color analysis beauty secrets for Glamour .
What are seasonal color palettes?
Before we get into lipstick, let's get you up to speed. You might recognize color analysis or seasonal color palettes from the viral TikTok effect Armocromia by @aida.creator , which users have utilized to find their “seasons” (more on that below). But as is the case with many TikTok trends, the concept isn't exactly new: Much of contemporary color season theory stems from Carole Jackson's Color Me Beautiful , a style book published in 1987. Nearly 40 years later, color analysis is a full-fledged industry (and TikTok trend), and professional image consultants and color analysts are regularly hired to help individuals dress and feel their best through color.
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.
“Seasonal color analysis is a technique [used] to identify your color palette and determine the group of colors that harmonize with your complexion,” Vaz tells Glamour , explaining that each person is classified by season based on the characteristics of their features.
There are 12 seasons total, divided into spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and then into subsections of each: light, true, bright, and deep. The full list of seasons is light spring, bright spring, true spring, true summer, soft summer, light summer, true autumn, soft autumn, deep autumn, true winter, bright winter, and deep winter.
In order to find your own season, you need to analyze three color dimensions: value, which examines whether your skin is light or dark; chroma, which analyzes whether it's muted or bright; and undertone, which is whether you are warm, cool, or neutral-toned. Or, ideally, have an expert do this for you.
How do I know whether I have a warm or cool undertone?
It's best to have your color analyzed by a professional, but if you can't—or are patiently waiting on Vaz's waiting list like me—there are techniques to uncovering your undertones that can help you find suitable lipstick colors for your skin's temperature. “How to find the undertone is the question I receive the most,” Vaz says, since it's obviously useful when it comes to finding face makeup but essential for finding your color palette.
Why is that? Well, temperature is the primary feature of several palettes. For example, the true winter palette, an example of which is Anne Hathaway , and true summer, as is Emily Blunt, have cool undertones. On the other side of the temperature spectrum is true autumn ( Beyoncé ) and true spring (Jessica Chastain), which have warm undertones.
If this seems confusing, don't worry: It becomes much easier to understand once you have visuals (something I've learned from intently following Vaz for the past few months). Examples of celebrities with warm undertones include Beyoncé, Jennifer Lawrence , Zendaya, and Jennifer Lopez—you'll notice they look their most balanced while wearing warm colors like orange, yellow, and/or cherry red.
Celebs with cool undertones, on the other hand, include Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Elle Fanning, who dazzle in cool tones like blue, purple, and green—or, in Rihanna's case, deep purple shades of lipstick.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas
When someone's temperature is not the principal feature of their palette, they will have a “neutral” undertone, which is then categorized as either neutral-cool or neutral-warm. “This means that the value—light or deep—or the intensity—bright or soft—will be the first color dimension,” Vaz says, pointing to bright spring, light spring, soft autumn, and deep autumn (think Glamour Woman of the Year Angela Bassett and Emily Ratajkowski) as palettes with neutral-warm undertones. The bright winter, deep winter, soft summer, and light summer palettes (Elle Fanning is an example) have neutral cool undertones.
As for how to figure out which you are? “You can do the lipstick test; when the undertone is incorrect, you can feel the lipstick will look off on you,” Vaz says. “Try lipsticks with more blueish shades with cool undertones, like MAC's Ruby You , and lipsticks with more yellowish shades and warm undertones like MAC's Chili's Crew and Frienda.”
Angela Bassett, neutral warm
Elle Fanning, neutral cool
Another tip? Try wearing overly warm color tones like orange, both in your makeup and clothing. “There isn't a cool tone of orange, so if you like to wear orange tones, you most likely have a warm or neutral-warm undertone rather than cool,” Vaz explains. If you are still unsure, you can always invest in shades that are universally balancing, i.e., not too warm or too cool. “That is the case of navy blue, emerald green, teal, and wine-red burgundy colors,” she says.
Translation? If you're totally lost, a wine-red burgundy lip shade is a good place to start. Why else would Clinique's iconic Black Honey be so universally adored? If you want something a little more pigmented, try Pat McGrath's MatteTrance Lipstick in Full Blooded .

How do I know whether I’m high, low, or medium contrast?
If you can't pinpoint your undertones, you can still find the best lipstick for your skin tone by identifying your level of color contrast. “Color contrast is one of the key elements of color analysis,” Vaz says. “It's all about how intense the difference between the lightest and darkest elements of your complexion—eyes, skin tone, hair color—is. Understanding your color contrast can help you determine the most effective ways to incorporate colors from your palette and decide on appropriate shades.”
By Kathleen Walsh
By Elizabeth Logan
As for what this means? “Individuals with significant contrast between their skin tone and hair color, such as those with dark hair and light skin or vice versa, have a high-contrast beauty,” Vaz says. “In these cases, color combinations that create a strong contrast with their skin tone can accentuate their features beautifully.”
Basically, if you are high-contrast, darker colors that mimic the contrast between your skin and hair will balance your look. Some high-contrast celebrities include Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, Alexandra Daddario, Jenna Ortega , and Jennie Kim. See the stark difference between their hair and features and skin, and the fact that they're often wearing black and white (which mimics said contrast).
If you're low-contrast, lighter pigments are often the way to go. Some low-contrast celebrities include Taylor Swift, Viola Davis, Sydney Sweeney, and Jennifer Lopez—there is very little contrast between their skin, hair, and feature colors.
There is also “medium contrast,” which falls somewhere in the middle. Zendaya, Emma Stone, Angela Bassett, and Emily Blunt fall under this category. To find yours, simply turn some selfies black-and-white and see how much of a difference there is between your skin, hair, and features.
“Knowing your color contrast can be a great tool to harmonize the color tones, especially if you don't know your color palette yet,” Vaz says. If you want to know more, she made a live video on the subject on her Instagram.
The Best Lipstick Color for Each Color Palette
Now for what you've all been waiting for: the best lipstick color for each color palette! If you still don't know yours, you're in luck. I asked Vaz to list (what she believes to be) some of our favorite celebrities’ color palettes, as well as which lipsticks work for them. So if someone's value, chroma, and undertones look similar to yours, you just might share a palette.
The spring family has light and medium tones with warm undertones and a bright appearance. For visual reference of each subtype, Taylor Swift is a light spring, Kerry Washington a bright spring, and celebrities like Jamie Chung and Jessica Chastain are true springs.
For this palette, Vaz recommends midtone pinks and corals as well as tomato reds, like MAC's Lady Bug (which, unsurprisingly, looks just like the Taylor Swift red shade of Red fame ).

The summer family has light and medium tones with cool undertones and a soft appearance. For visual reference of each subtype, Emily Blunt is a true summer, Rihanna a soft summer, and Elle Fanning and Jung Chae-yeon are light summers.
Vaz recommends blue-pinks and cranberry shades for summer palettes.
MAC Lustreglass Sheer-Shine Lipstick in Syrup
Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color in Cranberry
The autumn family is made up of medium and deep tones with warm undertones and a soft appearance. Beyoncé and Zendaya are true autumn, Gigi Hadid and Hailey Bieber are soft autumn, and Jenna Ortega and Emily Ratajkowski are deep autumns.
Vaz suggests blushed nude and brick red lipsticks for this color family.
Pat McGrath SatinAllure Lipstick in Nude Venus
MERIT Signature Lip Lightweight Lipstick in Tiger
Winter palettes have medium and deep tones with cool undertones and a bright appearance. For examples of a true winter, see Lupita Nyong'o and Liv Tyler. Lily Collins and Krysten Ritter are bright winters, while quite a few celebrities are deep winter: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Viola Davis, Kim Kardashian, Lucy Liu, and Selena Gomez are all believed to be deep winters.
For this color family, Vaz suggests deep berry and plum shades with blue undertones and vivid blue-reds.

And if you're still stuck? Your best bet is simply to go with whichever shade you like best, since that's really all that matters.

The pros tell all: the key to choosing a lip color that complements your skin.
If you've ever bought a lip color just to realize it doesn't complement your skin as expected it would post-purchase, you're not alone. This is a universal experience for lipstick wearers everywhere—and it's frustrating, to say the least.
Lipstick shopping sounds like a walk in the park until you realize that navigating the vast world of a million different shades of pinks, peaches, berries, reds, wines, and browns isn't easy—like at all.
To narrow down the search a bit, you can call on the undertone matching method—something plenty of makeup experts and wearers do on the regular.
But just remember, makeup should be fun! When you overthink the shades and second-guess all your choices, all of a sudden it becomes belabored. Life can be stressful enough, let's not add "lipstick undertones" to the list of things that may give you pause.
So even though the following are great pointers to help you on your shopping journey, the best advice is to just go with what makes you feel the best in your skin.
Skin tone has to do with the richness of your skin color (fair, medium, and deep for example). Undertones are the colors shining through under your skin.
Each skin tone can have different undertones—the main four being cool, warm, neutral, and olive. When lip color doesn't match the undertone, there may be a clash.
"It does matter, because when people wear pink lipstick, the pink lipstick can look completely different for each individual person," celebrity makeup artist & SHEGLAM Partner Allan Avendano tells mbg. "Some pinks can turn orange, some can turn bubblegum pink…It all depends on your undertone."
However, like everything in beauty, the end-all-be-all is personal preference, as makeup is an art and not a science. If you like a shade of lipstick and it makes you feel good, that's all that matters, undertones or not.
So while identifying your undertones can be helpful, don't stress about it too much. Ultimately makeup should be fun—not a chore.
Identifying your own undertones.
There are a few ways to figure out what undertones you may have. Here, a rundown:
- Paper test. "Take a piece of red paper and a piece of blue paper, and put each next to your face to see what looks more flattering," natural makeup artist Amber Talarico once told mbg. "If you look best with blue, you have cool undertones, and if you look best with red, you have warm." And for those people who look radiant with both? You likely fall somewhere in the middle and have neutral.
- Jewelry test. Look at what you prefer wearing, or what you think looks best on you. Golds flatter warm tones, while silver flatters cool. (Of course, if you prefer either metal over the other, just wear what you want—again, this is an art, not a science.)
- Vein test. This is simple: Look at the veins on your wrist. If they appear more blue or purple, you have cool tones. If they look more green, you're warm. And if they look like a mix of both, you have neutral.
- A quiz! Lucky you: We developed an easy quiz to help you figure out your own undertones. If you need to pop on over to take the quick assessment, please do. We'll meet you back here ready to help you find a lipstick.
Identifying undertones in lipsticks.
You may have figured out what undertones your skin has, but what about the lipsticks themselves? Yes, makeup has it's own undertones too. For example a red may have more blue undertones (making it a cool shade) or more coral (making it warm.)
One way to figure out if the lip color is more warm or cool is to default to the paper test above: Compare the shade to red paper versus blue paper, and see which one it better blends with.
However, a word of warning: Identifying undertones in reds and pink lipsticks can be a bit easier than doing so in nudes.
"When it comes to finding the right nude lipstick that matches your skin tone the key is to realize that nudes have undertones too. Some nudes have a pink undertone or an orange undertone," celebrity and editorial makeup artist Delina Medhin tells mbg.
Cool undertones give the skin a pink, blue, or red hue. If silvery jewelry complements your skin best, you just might have cool undertones.
This can show up more significantly under the eyes for some (yep, even if you have warm undertones otherwise). As the rule goes, you'll want to pull from those colors to find your perfect lipstick shade. Here are a few base colors you might be drawn to:
- For brown or neutral shades: Purple, mauve, taupe
- For reds: Cherry, wine, berry, purple
- For pinks: dusty or nude rose

Warm undertones have a base of yellowish, gold, and peach hues sneaking through.
If gold jewelry complements your skin better than silver, you may have warm undertones.
You'll want to pull from generally warmer colors for your lip. A few hints to keep an eye out for:
- For brown and neutral shades: Caramel
- For reds: Brick, terracotta, candy apple
- For pinks: Peach, coral, orange

Neutral & olive.
Neutral undertones have the luck of the draw, as most colors will complement a neutral undertone.
This means you'll have both yellow and blue undertones, so you can pick from a wide variety of colors without worrying about clashes.
Olive undertone is different from neutral (though they're often confused for the same). Olive undertones have a green, gray, and sometimes ashy undertone.
When it comes to lip color, warmer and deeper colors tend to complement olive skin best, a few examples include:
- For brown and neutral shades: Chestnut, hints of gold, chocolate brown
- Reds: Deep corals, cranberry
- Pinks: Light to deep shades of peach

If you've been hunting for the perfect lipstick for your skin but haven't had any luck, hopefully, this guide will serve as a road map. At the end of the day, whatever lip color makes you feel beautiful and confident is the one you should choose, regardless of the undertones. If you want a larger selection of dreamy lip colors, use this list as a launching point .

The Best Lipsticks for Fair Skin, From Nudes to Reds
Each one will complement your complexion.
What to Look for
What to avoid, how to test, the best lipsticks for fair skin, meet the expert.
In the beauty world, lipstick functions like a statement piece. Whether deep plum or blush pink, a precisely chosen color can bring attention that rivals wearing a sold-out designer bag or a sky-high heel—especially when the lip shade complements and enhances your skin tone. When it comes to the best lipsticks for fair skin, expert-recommended shades make your lips pop without making your skin look sallow.
According to celebrity makeup artist Elaina Badro, it all comes down to "choosing a color that will not wash you out”—plus a few more key considerations. Ahead, Badro explains everything there is to know about finding the best lipsticks for fair skin, from key details to seek out to which products she swears by. You'll also find lipsticks tested and approved by Marie Claire editors.
The best lipsticks for fair skin vary by undertone. To find yours, take a quick look at the veins on your wrist: If they're blue, you have a cool undertone, whereas if they're green, you have a warm undertone. If you see a bit of both—or your veins look in between blue and green—you have a neutral undertone.
Allow your undertone to guide which shades you try first. "If you have fair skin with a cool undertone, opt for a red that is blue based," Badro advises. "If you have fair skin with a warm undertone, opt for a red that is orange based." Have a neutral undertone? Either category works.
Regardless of specific undertone, the makeup expert will always recommend a red lipstick for people with fair skin. Soft corals and soft pinks are also failsafe choices. When plum tones are on the table, Badro advises one with a pink undertone. "This will suit people with fair skin because it will provide some warmth to the skin," she explains.
You should feel comfortable wearing any lipstick you want regardless of conventional wisdom. But if you're seeking guidance for fair skin specifically, Badro recommends steering clear of rusts or dark chocolate browns. "These tones tend to look best on darker skin with a warmer undertone," she explains.
In-store: Retailers aren't likely to allow testing directly on your lips. "Pre-Covid, makeup counters were able to shave down the lipsticks, swipe with alcohol, and allow the customer to try on the lip," Badro tells Marie Claire . "Recently, some counters have changed this."
If a store no longer offers disposable lipstick applicators, she suggests testing the shade on another part of your skin that resembles your lip color. "Sometimes, the inside of your wrists and/or forearm are great for this," she says.
Online: See if your website of choice offers a lip quiz or a virtual try-on. Many sites also show images of women with different skin tones swatching each color on their wrists to give you an idea.
For a pink shade, Badro gushes over this satin lipstick by Buxom. “It brings a youthful glow to the skin," she explains—a welcome point of balance for those with cooler undertones who want to add a bit of warmth to their skin. The cruelty-free formula also promises never to feather or bleed, and it contains moisturizing ingredients for soft, healthy lips.
Pros: moisturizing; expert-approved; cruelty-free; plumping
Cons: tingling effect from the plumper may be unwelcome for some
Customer Review: "My favorite part is the creamy texture which keeps my lip hydrated. The plumper with cool and minty tingle gives plumping effect within minutes." -Ulta
“MAC Cosmetics in 'Ruby Woo' is an all-time favorite,” Badro says. “It's super matte, too, so it'll last all day on the lip!” MAC describes it as a “very matte vivid blue-red.” While it looks striking on just about every skin tone, its bright hue is especially gorgeous on fair skin (no matter the undertone).
Pros: editor-approved; great for everyday wear; longwear
Cons: some say it's drying
Customer Review: "I haven't found another lipstick that I love as much as this one. I get so many compliments on it! I'm getting married and even plan on sticking with this lipstick for my wedding day." -Ulta
“Pixi Beauty makes a pretty lilac tone in Pastel Petal, which is lovely on fair skin with cool skin tones,” says Badro. It's so beloved, it often sells out (and generates a wait-list for restocks). All the fanfare is thanks to its comfortable, lightweight formula, infused with rosehip oil to prevent lips from drying out. A longwear option, it also dries matte—something that customers love—and has an applicator designed for precisely accentuating your Cupid’s bow.
Pros: paraben-free; expert-approved; not tested on animals; longwear
Cons: while many found it moisturizing, some found it drying
Customer Review: "Great Product! One swipe and you're good to go! Not drying like many matte products! I really like it!" -Pixi Beauty
For a timeless look reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, “Reds are beautiful on fair skin,” Badro reiterates. In that vein, check out this red hot shade from Bésame Cosmetics. The Latina-founded beauty brand makes nostalgic references through its retro and beautifully packaged cosmetics. This shade channels the year 1959, when classic Hollywood—and its recognizable glam—was in its prime.
Pros: BIPOC-founded; nostalgic look; editor-approved color
Cons: none found
Customer Review: "This lipstick is perfect in every way. The colour is amazing, and apart from a minor touch up after eating lunch, will last me an entire day at work without moving from it’s place." -Bésame Cosmetics
I absolutely love this formula from Bobbi Brown. It stays on for ages, never feels drying, and has a lightweight, non-irritating texture. According to Hello Magazine , this option is one of Kate Middleton’s all-time favorites: She reportedly carries it in her purse to wear it on its own or to layer it with other options. Who’s to argue with a royal stamp of approval?
Pros: highly pigmented; moisturizing; lightweight; longwear; editor-approved
Cons: expensive for its size
Customer Review: "Formula is great and the shade is perfect! It’s 'your lips but better' kind of shade." -Sephora
I will always, always rave about Smashbox’s Always On lipstick. With a highly pigmented formula suited to every skin tone, it’s a longwear, matte lipstick that won’t budge for a whole day or night of wear—and reviewers back this claim up. The shade Out Loud comes in a warm, deep orange hue specifically suited to fair skin. It’s perfect for spring and summer days, or for injecting long winter nights with some much-needed sunshine.
Pros: longwear; editor-approved; highly pigmented
Cons: can be drying
Customer Review: "I am a lipstick addict, and I'm in love with this lipstick! It STAYS ON, even after a meal. FINALLY THE HOLY GRAIL!!!" -Ulta
Celebrities from Meghan Markle to Amal Alamuddin swear by Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution lipsticks. The brand’s classic pink, nude, and mauve shades aren’t just for those with medium and deep skin tones, however. Shades like Super Model and Cover Star, for instance, bring a natural color (with a little extra oomph ) to people with fair skin . Plus, the super soft, rich formula will never dry out your lips.
Pros: vegan; longwear; celebrity favorite
Cons: some transfer
Customer Review: "Forget the fillers! This is a great pale nude lip color that when paired with a darker nude lipliner & gloss, makes lips look full and natural!" -Sephora
If you’re looking for a natural, “no makeup makeup” look, consider this translucent balm-meets-lipstick from L’Oreal. It’s made with summer in mind, with ingredients that are 92 percent natural in order to prioritize your lips’ hydration and overall health. Swipe it on, and people will wonder whether your lips are naturally that glowy. Plus, at under $15, the price can’t be beat.
Pros: affordable; moisturizing; made from natural ingredients
Cons: not highly pigmented
Customer Review: "This lipstick makes my lips feel moist and smooth with just enough color. It goes where I go! I even apply before bed so my lips are soft and nourished while I sleep. Its a wonderful product." -Ulta
Look no further for your next go-to nude lipstick. Chanel’s Rouge Allure comes in more than a dozen different shades, but shade 206 is perfect for those with fair skin. This option provides a natural look with heaps of additional benefits, including long lasting pigmented color, minimal transfer, and a fade-proof formula. The formula also promises to deliver full, comfortable coverage that moisturizes lips all day long.
Pros: moisturizing; highly pigmented; comes in many shades
Cons: higher price point
Customer Review: "The formula is beautiful, effortless and classic. Relatively long lasting and quite moisturizing." -Chanel

These Are the Best Nude Lipsticks for Your Skin Tone
By Angela Trakoshis
A swipe of nude lipstick is an easy way to look like you made some effort in your makeup look. It's a tricky thing, though, because choosing a shade that clashes with your skin tone can do you dirty — as we've all learned by wearing a nude lip color…only to look like an undead version of ourselves. "The perfect nude makes your face look fresh and youthful, but a lot of people pick something too light, too opaque, or too beige," says makeup artist Nick Barose .
While you'll find many examples of makeup artist-approved formulas in the slides below, it can be helpful to keep some general guidelines in mind when perusing the vast array of taupes, toffees, and caramels on your own. People with fair or light skin can beautifully pull off pink- and rose-based hues, whereas medium and olive skin tones look incredible in beiges, browns, or even a berry or mauve-adjacent nude. As for deeper skin tones, there's a lot of room to play with shades ranging from creamy, dark caramels to rich cocoa.
Here, we present tips straight from the pros, alongside a variety of the best nude lipsticks for fair skin, medium skin, dark skin, and deep skin tones.
All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Fair/Light Skin: Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte & Satin Velvet Lipstick in Haze
Leave it to Anastasia Beverly Hills to create a lip product with insane pigment and comfort that will last all day. The Matte & Satin Velvet Lipstick features an array of hues including satiny nudes and more vibrant, matte shades like berry reds. This color, Haze, a light peach, comes in a satin finish that just glides on lips with ease.
Fair/Light Skin: Sisley Phyto-Lip Twist in Baby
Now that you're properly prepped, it's time to decide whether or not you want to play up the pinky tones in your lips. If the answer is yes, stick to pale, rosy nudes — like the Sisley Phyto-Lip Twist in Baby. This crayon has a satin texture that's not too creamy, so there's minimal transfer as the day goes on.
Fair/Light Skin: L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Fairest Nude
Prefer to take the natural rosiness in your lips down a notch? Try a sheer, light taupe or beige, like the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Fairest Nude. It's affordable yet its packaging looks expensive — the golden combo, some might say.
Fair/Light Skin: MAC Satin Lipstick in Cherish
Makeup artist Tobi Henney , loves using a cool-toned nude shade like this muted pink bullet by MAC on paler skin tones. "I tend to look at the natural color of the lip to guide me," she says. "I always want around the same depth of the lip color in my nude lipstick that I am going to apply, which is why I love this Satin Lipstick in Cherish for lighter-skinned clients."

Fair/Light Skin: Nars Sheer Lipstick in Cruising
"Nude lipsticks have to be chosen carefully so as not to wash out your complexion or look too light against your skin tone," says Henney, who keeps Nars's Sheer Lipstick in Cruising in her kit for lighter-toned clients. (Bonus points: a sheer formula blends seamlessly with your natural lip color for an undetectable finish.)
Medium Skin: Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk
One of the most popular nude lipsticks of all time, Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk has earned veritable icon status (and an Allure Best of Beauty Award ), thanks to its creamy formula and warm nude hue that seems to work on almost anybody. Not to mention, there's a medium shade as well, which works great on tan to dark skin tones.
Medium Skin: Makeup By Mario Ultra Suede Lipstick in Kate
If anyone is going to create a perfect nude for medium skin, it's going to be Kim Kardashian's makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic . The Makeup By Mario Ultra Suede Lipstick is a matte lipstick that feels anything but dry. This hue, Kate, is a rosy nude that feels soft but gives depth to your lips.
Medium Skin: Maybelline New York Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color in Daring Nude
"The depth of the lipstick color should correlate with the skin tone, meaning the lighter the skin, the lighter the nude, and the darker skin, the darker the nude," explains makeup artist Quinn Murphy. Peachy-tan hues like Maybelline New York Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color pictured above are as wallet-friendly as they are chic. Plus, this shade Darling Nude is just darling for medium skin tones.
Medium Skin: Tom Ford Lip Color in Sable Smoke

The 16 Best Lip Glosses of 2024, Loved by Testers
With picks from Tower 28, Fenty Beauty, and more
Cherisse Harris is a fact-checker with a focus on lifestyle, beauty, and parenting. She's worked in research for nearly two decades.
Byrdie / Reese Herrington
Forget everything you once knew about lip glosses—modern formulas have traded the sticky, goopy textures of the past for more lightweight, hydrating consistencies. Though they provide the same juicy-looking finish that was popular in the early 2000s, today’s glosses are a heck of a lot more comfortable to wear . From clear, glassy picks to more saturated formulas, there’s a plethora of options regardless of your preferences.
To help you find the best lip gloss (or a few) for you, we put dozens of options to the test in our lab facility in NYC, evaluating each one based on its formula and feel on the lips, how well it hydrated them, how well it wore, and the shade range . More than a dozen thoroughly impressed us—ranging from drugstore buys to more high-end options —and ahead, we’re sharing the ones we believe are the best on the market.
Bobbi brown crushed oil-infused gloss.

Comfortable, creamy formula
Contains moisturizing ingredients
The very best lip glosses are hydrating and comfortable to wear (in addition to providing the look you want, of course), and this one checks those boxes. Formulated with a blend of nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamins, and botanicals , it feels soft and moisturizing when applied—and it keeps lips feeling quenched for hours on end. Though it’s not the most glassy-looking gloss on this list, it creates a shiny finish and provides a wash of semi-pigmented, healthy-looking color. We loved that this formula is neither goopy nor runny , so it doesn’t feather or bleed into lip lines. It’s lightweight, creamy, and non-sticky , and it layers beautifully over a lip liner or your favorite lip color. If you’re looking for a moisturizing lip gloss that adds an understated shine, we highly recommend this one.

Best Overall, Runner-Up
Fenty beauty gloss bomb cream color drip lip cream.
- Hydration 4.5 /5
- Wear/Longevity 4.7 /5
Lightweight, creamy texture
Keeps lips feeling hydrated
Subtle fruity scent
Could be a bit more long-wearing
The original Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb quickly became a fan-favorite in the lip gloss category, so it’s no surprise that this pigmented, non-shimmery version has followed suit. The lightweight, creamy formula is non-sticky and feels pillowy and soft on the lips , and we loved that it kept them feeling hydrated throughout the duration of the test. Some of the shades in the minimal range are more pigmented than others, though they can all be built up for fairly opaque coverage . As the glossy finish faded gradually after a couple of hours, we noticed that the color left behind remained even and intact. We also adore the subtle fruity scent—it’s a nice diversion from vanilla fragrances often featured in lip products. We were impressed with the performance of this gloss and recommend it to anyone looking for a one-and-done product that provides moisture, shine, and color .
Highlighted Ingredients: Shea butter | Shades: 5 | Size: 9 ml

Saie glossybounce hydrating lip gloss oil.
Too light for those looking for high-pigmented gloss
“I was so ready to declare myself completely over lip gloss when this one showed up at my desk and sucked me right back in. My lips look so full and perfect thanks to this delicious, non-sticky formula ," raves Bella Cacciatore, news editor at Byrdie. “Most lip oils claim to be hydrating but never actually replace my lip balm , but thanks to the hyaluronic acid in the formula, this one actually keeps my lips happy. I also love the range of unexpected but super wearable colors.”
Available in six glistening tones, this tinted gloss is the ideal complement for those who prefer a gloss with a balm-like consistency. While the shades aren't super buildable—meaning you won't be able to get a ton of color density with them—they each add a hint of color that looks beautiful on minimal makeup days or layered over lipstick .
Highlighted Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, shea butter | Shades: 6 | Size: 5 ml
Maybelline new york lip lifter gloss.
- Feel 4.2 /5
- Wear/Longevity 4.9 /5
Doesn't feather or bleed
Some of the shades need building up
Could be more high-shine
The large doe-foot applicator reminds us of the one in the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb , though this drugstore pick is just a fraction of the cost. The applicator picks up enough product to coat the lips without needing to re-dip several times. The formula is creamy with a texture that feels akin to a semi-thick gel , and we appreciated that it didn’t feel sticky or overly goopy on the lips . Once applied, it lasts well without bleeding or feathering, and it feels nice and hydrating without being greasy . While we wish the finish delivered a bit more shine and the shades were more consistent in terms of their pigmentation levels, the formula is fantastic, and at such an affordable price, this gloss is hard to beat.

Nyx professional makeup butter gloss non-sticky lip gloss.
- Feel 4.3 /5
Large shade range
Smooth, creamy consistency
Doesn't bleed or feather
Shine fades fairly quickly
Could be more hydrating
Another, even more budget-friendly option, this popular pick from NYX has been a staple in the lip gloss category for many years. The creamy, butter-like formula is incredibly smooth and soft. It comes in more than 30 shades , ranging from light and dark nudes to vibrant pinks and berry reds, all of which have buildable pigmentation. In terms of wear and hydration benefits, we think there are more impressive formulas, but all things considered, this affordable option is worth trying, especially if you’re looking for a shiny gloss in a particular color.

Best High Shine
Tower 28 shineon lip jelly non-sticky gloss.
- Wear/Longevity 4.8 /5
- Results 4.7 /5
Nice shade range
Feels smooth and comfortable on the lips
Can get slightly tacky as it dries
With a glossy, gel-like formula, this super comfortable gloss from Tower 28 might as well have its own fan club. People rave about the smooth, non-sticky consistency, how soft it feels on the lips, and most of all, how wildly shiny and glassy the finish is. It comes in a range of milky neutrals and jelly-like pops of color , and we loved how it looked on the lips—it created a smooth wash of color with a wet-looking shine . We also appreciate that it’s formulated with a blend of oils which helps to keep the lips from feeling dry . Though it can feel just the slightest bit tacky as it fades after several hours, generally, you won’t have to think twice about it being thick or sticky. If you like the look of intense shine, this is undoubtedly the lip gloss for you.
Highlighted Ingredients: Apricot kerne, raspberry seed, and rosehip oils | Shades: 13 | Size: 4 ml
Westman atelier squeaky clean lip balm.
Color fades relatively quickly
If you’re someone who likes to splurge on little luxuries, this lavish lip gloss is perfect for you. The sleek, weighted packaging looks and feels elegant, and the formula feels plush and creamy while remaining comfortable on the lips. Infused with a blend of nourishing oils, like almond and jojoba oil, we found that the formula felt pretty average in terms of hydration (it wasn’t drying but it also wasn’t the most hydrating option), though the creamy consistency was ultra-soft and lightweight on the lips. The shades create a visible but not overpowering wash of color, and a nice shiny finish . We also think this is a great pick for anyone who prefers opting for products with more natural formulations.
Highlighted Ingredients: Jojoba, almond, and argan oils, shea butter | Shades: 6 | Size: 6.5 ml
Rare beauty stay vulnerable glossy lip balm.
- Hydration 4 /5
Lightweight, creamy formula
Not tacky or goopy
Colors are buildable
Finish isn't super shiny
Sticky gloss haters, raise your hands! Heavy, sticky lip gloss is a makeup pet peeve for so many people; we’re glad formulas have improved over the years and there are now tons of non-sticky options on the market. Out of the ones we put to the test, this is the pick we recommend the most for those who are sensitive to tacky formulas . It feels like a hybrid between a lip gloss and a balm —it’s smooth, creamy, and lightweight.
Though it didn’t stand out for its hydrating ingredients, it didn’t feel drying to us. It felt creamy and comfortable to wear for hours at a time, and we loved how subtly the color and shine faded. Each shade provides a hint of rosy, wearable color, and we liked how an added layer or two could build up the pigmentation . If you’re looking for a great everyday gloss that you’ll barely even notice on your lips, this is the one for you.
Highlighted Ingredients: Botanical blend | Shades: 5 | Size: 3.8 ml
Lancôme juicy tubes lip gloss.
- Feel 4.6 /5
- Hydration 4.7 /5
A lot of product in the tube
Thick, pretty sticky formula
Incredibly popular in the early 2000s, this iconic pick from Lancôme remains a favorite—if you can get past the thick, fairly sticky consistency. Yes, it’s thick and definitely more tacky than the other options on this list, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing when you consider that usually, the thicker and more sticky the formula, the longer it lasts on the lips. We found that if you apply a light layer, it provides incredible shine and wears for several hours without needing to reapply it . If you can resist the urge to rub your lips together frequently, it feels smooth and pretty comfortable once applied. The plush texture also helps to blur the appearance of fine lines on the lips , which can lead to a more plump-looking pout. Plus, we appreciate that there’s a ton of product in the tube, so this gloss will last you quite some time.
Highlighted Ingredients: Vitamin E | Shades: 12 | Size: 15 ml
Summer fridays lip butter balm.
- Results 4.5 /5
Smooth, creamy texture
Helps to lock in moisture
Not the most long-lasting
If you keep up with popular products on BeautyTok, chances are you’re familiar with this hydrating lip balm that doubles as a gloss . Formulated with a blend of nourishing seed butters, the smooth and creamy texture feels soft and comfortable on the lips. While we didn’t necessarily feel like it added a ton of moisture to the lips, we did find that applying it over a thin lip balm or chapstick helped to lock in moisture and keep the lips feeling soft for an extended period of time.
It comes in six shades that range from a clear option to a deep berry, and each one coats the lips in a glossy finish . It’s not the most revolutionary glossy lip balm on the market, but we were quite pleased with the performance and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a hydrating gloss to pop in their bag.
Highlighted Ingredients: Shea and murumuru seed butter | Shades: 6 | Size: 15 ml
Patrick ta major volume lip gloss.
- Plumping Ability 4 /5
Helps to plump the appearance of lip lines
Results could be a bit more dramatic
Earning our best overall pick in our test of the best lip plumpers of 2023 , this popular gloss from Patrick Ta continues to impress us. The rich texture delivers dramatic shine and feels ultra-soft on the lips . Unlike a lot of plumping glosses that cause intense tingling or burning, this one f eels cooling and a bit tingly for just a few minutes . It’s formulated with cinnamon and ginger to help subtly plump lips , as well as moisturizing peptides to support a healthy skin barrier.
The results aren’t as dramatic as some other lip plumpers on the market, but we did notice some visible improvement in the appearance of lines and lip plumpness when applied. We also appreciate that the shine lasts for several hours and it has a unique cinnamon scent that’s subtle and pleasant. If you’re looking for a painless plumping gloss with a wet-looking finish, we think you’ll be really pleased with this one.

Best Shade Range
Pat mcgrath labs lust gloss.
- Feel 4.7 /5
Tons of colors to choose from
Feels soft and nourishing
Can feel a bit thick and heavy on the lips
If you’re looking for a specific lip gloss shade, chances are, you’ll meet your match in this extensive line from Pat McGrath. The range features tons of nude shades as well as rich reds, glittery golds, and pretty much everything in between . But aside from the gorgeous colors, we were also impressed with the formula. The texture is on the thicker side which might not be ideal for everyone, but we felt that it still remained comfortable on the lips and the thickness and subtle tackiness helped to increase the longevity . It didn’t bleed or feather, it felt soft and nourishing on the lips, and it provided a lustrous shine. Swiping on your favorite shade is the perfect final step in any makeup routine.
Highlighted Ingredients: None referenced | Shades: 32 | Size: 4.4 ml
Best Color Payoff
Jones road beauty cool gloss.
Jones Road Beauty
- Feel 4.8 /5
Feels slightly cooling
Smooth, soft texture
Provides buildable color payoff
Line has shimmery and non-shimmery shades
Lip glosses that deliver a nice dose of color can help you cut down on steps in your makeup routine, and this is one of them. One or two swipes of your favorite shade will give your lips a noticeable wash of color with a shiny finish . We enjoy that the range features nudes, pinks, and terracotta hues, and we really love that some shades have fine shimmer in them while others are shimmer-free .
The texture has a medium consistency and feels soft and nourishing on the lips, though we didn’t feel like it was the most hydrating compared to the others we tested. After applying the gloss and waiting for a minute, it creates a subtle cooling sensation (thanks to the peppermint oil in the formula), but it’s not overbearing or painful. The formula feels like a nice, standard lip gloss, but it’s the pigmented shades that make it really stand out.
Highlighted Ingredients: Shea butter | Shades: 10 | Size: 15 ml
Best Lip Gloss Stick
Tarte juicy lip balm.
- Feel 4.5 /5
- Wear/Longevity 4.5 /5
Convenient, mess-free application
Smooth, lightweight texture
Solid lip glosses have become incredibly popular recently, and this one from Tarte seriously impressed us. Housed in a clicky, pen-like tube , the gloss stick is compact and easy to use. Just a few clicks bring up enough product to evenly coat your lips in the creamy, moisturizing formula. It’s lightweight and comfortable , and we liked that the colors can be built up to provide medium coverage . It offers a juicy, high-shine finish that looks beautiful on bare lips or layered over lip liner. Though it isn’t the most long-wearing gloss on this list, the lightweight formula is easy to re-apply throughout the day and builds without gumming up. If you like the application experience of lipstick but the effect of a gloss, this pick is totally worth checking out.
Highlighted Ingredients: Maracuja and grapeseed oil, goji | Shades: 12 | Size: 2.7 ml
Mac squirt plumping gloss stick.
- Results 4.3 /5
Refreshing, cooling sensation
A bit messy to apply
Shades could offer a bit more pigmentation
Another gloss in stick form, this one is for people who crave a super glassy, wet-looking finish . It’s extremely emollient—which does make it a bit messy to apply from the stick—but it feels incredibly soft and moisturizing on the lips. Once you apply it, the gloss creates a subtle cooling sensation that lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes. It’s plush without feeling sticky or heavy , and it lasts nicely for a few hours before the shine slowly starts to dissipate. The range features neutral shades and unique pops of color like blue and gray, though they’re all pretty sheer. It’s great for popping on bare lips to add shine and a drop of color, but it also layers beautifully over lip liner or a lip tint.
Highlighted Ingredients: Ginger root oil | Shades: 10 | Size: 2.4 ml
Glow recipe plum plump hyaluronic gloss balm.
- Wear/Longevity 4.3 /5
Moisturizing hyaluronic acid formula
Provides long-lasting moisture
Can feel a bit heavy and tacky
If you deal with dry lips, then you know that finding products that look nice and glossy while also truly helping to quench dryness isn’t easy. But perhaps your hunt can end here with this gloss-balm hybrid from Glow Recipe. Formulated with hyaluronic acid, plum-derived antioxidants, and raspberry extract, it helps to hydrate the lips and protect them from environmental aggressors . The texture is rich and a bit tacky, though this helps to keep the formula from slipping and sliding around and fading quickly. It’s free from synthetic fragrances which is ideal if you have sensitive skin , and we loved how comfortable and nourishing just a light layer felt. It created a high-shine finish with impressive wear time, and we think this pick is excellent for daytime use or as an overnight lip mask .
Highlighted Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Kakadu plum blend | Shades: 1 | Size: 15 ml
Where We Stand
Our best overall pick is the Bobbi Brown Crushed Oil-Infused Gloss . It’s creamy and lightweight, the formula is moisturizing and non-sticky, and the shades are buildable. It’s beautiful on bare lips or applied on top of lip liner or your favorite lip color. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that comes in a large shade range, we recommend the NYX Butter Gloss . And if you like the convenience of lipstick but want a hydrating formula with a shiny finish, go for the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm .
How We Tested
In order to find the best lip glosses on the market, we put dozens of options to the test in our lab facility in NYC, evaluating each one based on its formula and feel on the lips, how well it hydrated them, how well it wore, and the shade range. Those that impressed us the most across the categories appear on this list.
What to Look for When Buying a Lip Gloss
- Hydrating Ingredients: Lip glosses with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, and shea butter will work double duty to give your lips some shine while also providing moisture—this is especially important if you have dry lips. Our best overall pick, the Bobbi Brown Crushed Oil-Infused Gloss , contains hyaluronic acid as well as vitamin E for nourishment. If you have super dry lips, we recommend trying the Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Acid Lip Gloss Balm which is an emollient formula that contains hyaluronic acid and protective ingredients. And if you’re looking for an everyday option that adds color and moisture in one step, go for the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm .
- Shade Range: Clear lip glosses are makeup collection must-haves considering that they layer beautifully over any and all lip colors, but if you want to knock out your color and shine step in one, pick a tinted gloss. The Pat McGrath Labs LUST: Lip Gloss comes in a wide variety of neutrals, rosy tones, and vibrant pops of color. And if you like everyday shades but want some bold color payoff, we suggest trying the Jones Road Cool Gloss .
- Finish: Lip glosses are, for the most part, glossy—we know you know that. However, there are levels to this; some offer a more muted shine while others provide a wet-looking finish that can be seen from far away. Ultimately, the finish you choose is nothing more than a matter of preference. If you like something with a subtle shine, we recommend the Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm . If you prefer a more dramatic shiny finish, try the Tower 28 ShineOn Lip Jelly or the Patrick Ta Major Volume Plumping Lip Gloss .
Chances are, you’ll want your everyday gloss to be hydrating and non-sticky—comfort is key, after all. The Bobbi Brown Crushed Oil-Infused Gloss is a great option for day-to-day use because it’s lightweight and adds a nice hint of color to the lips without being too bold or sticky. We also recommend keeping the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in your bag to re-apply throughout the day—it gives your lips a healthy dose of color, shine, and most importantly, hydration.
As we mentioned, people with dry lips should seek out lip glosses chocked full of hydrating ingredients. Our top hydrating picks are the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm and the Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Acid Lip Gloss Balm .

I am extraordinarily dissatisfied with this lip balm. I have been using top-of-the-line lip balms from Chanel and others for ages, and this one does not live up to my expectations. It dried out my lips the second I put it on. I would not recommend it. Les Beiges lip balm is much better.

I love this balm. The color is perfect and long lasting. Goes on smoothly and softens my lips.

My Rose color Rouge Coco Baume is a cheerful sheer peachy rose color that is beautiful for spring . I love to wear it with the chilling pink overtop . It goes very well with the new cool les beiges eyeshadow palette .

My all time favorite.
938 - KEEP COOL
Purchase date: 01/21/2024
Color not as pictured. This is a nice sheer balm however the color Keep Cool is nothing like the picture either in the tube, swatched on hand or on lips. It's really a cool frosty light beige. No pink or mauve to it. Wish it looked like the photo!
922 - PASSION PINK
Purchase date: 01/13/2024
Excellent lipstick, love the color and it stays on.
Purchase date: 01/02/2024
The keep cool limited edition coco baume is a beautiful nude pink brown glimmery shade that fits perfectly with the cool eyeshadow palette . It is slightly frosty and looks really pretty with the entire collection .
936 - CHILLING PINK
While I like the chilling pink color balm for lip hydration , it is very light . I usually combine it with another coco baume such as the keep cool or my rose . But the packaging is gorgeous .

My first Chanel lipstick. The color is gorgeous, glides on smooth and moisturizing my lips. Only problem is it bleeds past my lip lines within 30 minutes. I'm going to try lip liner. Case is beautiful and feels luxurious.

Light and nourishing this is the perfect balm when you want nourishment with ever so slight color
912 - DREAMY WHITE
Purchase date: 12/22/2023
My second baume, I love this product so much I had to buy another. It leaves my lips so hydrated and I love how there is no scent or tingling feeling after. I have one in my purse and another at home next to my lipsticks. This product allows me to wear it alone or add lipstick on top for color.
928 - PINK DELIGHT
Purchase date: 12/23/2023
Underwhelming overall. I absolutely adore my rouge coco flash and how it hydrated my lips, so I figured the balm would be even better. Unfortunately, it felt a bit waxy and dry, left creases in my lips. I sent back for a return but have yet to hear back from Chanel? I'll still be purchasing more of the flash in the future though.

MISREPRESENTATION OF GIFT WRAP!

Thanks to this lip balm, my lips feel moisturized and the color is also very pretty, so I'm satisfied.

Must Have in Your Bag! Surprised to read some of the reviews for this Coco Baume. First, let me clarify I see no "glitter" in Dreamy White at all. This is a lux lip product that hydrates and makes your lips feel supple without a sticky feeling. I use it all the time when around the house to keep lips hydrated in the cooler months. I use it as a primer before applying my Chanel lipstick and liner before heading off to work. I am looking forward to seeing more color options from Chanel so we can have a subtly pink shade that compliments every skin tone to match our natural lip colors. This will be the perfect accessory to all of our diverse looks throughout a week.
