French Verb Conjugation Using "Essayer" (to Try)

- Pronunciation & Conversation
- Resources For Teachers
The French verb essayer means "to try." It's a simple word that can easily be confused with essuyer (to wipe) , so be sure to look and listen for that 'A' in essayer .
In order to place essayer into the past, present, or future tense, the verb needs to be conjugated . Just follow along in this lesson and you'll be saying "tried" and "trying" in French before you know it.
Conjugating the French Verb Essayer
Essayer is an optional stem-changing verb . Typically with verbs that end in - yer , the 'Y' has to change to an 'I' in certain forms. The rules are a little more casual with essayer as you'll see in the table. When there are two forms of the conjugation, you can use either.
The stem of essayer is essay -. To this, a variety of infinitive endings is added that conform with the subject pronoun as well as the tense of the sentence. For instance, "I try" is " j'essaie " or " j'essaye ." Similarly, there are two options for "we will try": " nous essaierons " or " nous essayerons ."
All this leaves you with many words to memorize. The good news is that there are many opportunities to practice it and use essayer as you "try" things throughout your day.
The Present Participle of Essayer
The present participle of essayer is essayant . This is as simple as adding - ant to the verb stem. Not only does it work as a verb, but it can also become an adjective, gerund, or noun when needed.
The Past Participle and Passé Composé
The past participle essayé is used to form the passé composé , a common past tense form of "tried" in French. To use this, you'll also need to conjugate the auxiliary verb avoir . For example, "I tried" is " j'ai essayé " and "we tried" is " nous avons essayé ."
More Simple Essayer Conjugations to Know
When the action of trying is in some way questionable, you can turn to the subjunctive verb mood . Similarly, if it's dependent on something, the conditional verb mood is used.
With less frequency, you will come across the passé simple or the imperfect subjunctive . These are mostly found in formal writing and will help considerably with reading comprehension.
To use essayer in commands or direct requests, turn to the imperative verb form . When using this, the subject pronoun is not required: use " essaie " instead of " tu essaie ."

A Moscow court has rejected 'WSJ' reporter Evan Gershkovich's detention appeal

U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich, arrested on espionage charges, stands inside a defendants' cage before a hearing to consider an appeal on his arrest at the Moscow City Court on Tuesday.
MOSCOW — A Moscow court has rejected an appeal against the continued detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was apprehended on March 29 on charges of espionage.
Tuesday's hearing marked the first time the 31-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter was seen in public since the initial hours following his detention by Russian security agents while he was on a reporting trip in the Ural mountain city of Yekaterinburg.
Journalists were allowed briefly into the court room, where Gershkovich could be seen inside a glass cage, dressed in a blue checked shirt and jeans, chatting with his lawyers and occasionally smiling at onlookers. Burly masked Federal Security Service officers flanked the defendant cage.
U.S. Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy was also present for portions of the otherwise closed hearing. Following the ruling, Tracy repeated U.S. government calls for Gershkovich's immediate release.
"I can only say how troubling it was to see Evan, an innocent journalist, held in these circumstances," said Tracy, who noted she had only been granted consular access to the American journalist Monday after two weeks of trying.
"I can report that he is in good health and remains strong despite his circumstances," Tracy said.
With the ruling, the judge rejected a more than $600,000 bail offer by The Wall Street Journal 's parent company, Dow Jones, as well as a request to place him under house arrest pending trial, Gershkovich's lawyers said.
Gershkovich and his employers have vehemently rejected the espionage charges — which carry up to 20 years in prison in Russia.
"He would like to fight and prove that he is not guilty," says Maria Korchagina, one of the lawyers representing Gershkovich.
Korchagina told NPR her client will appeal the court's ruling but suggested the next hearing would come no sooner than late May.
"He's very glad for the huge support he's gotten from everybody," Korchagina said.

Journalist Evan Gershkovich tells family he's 'not losing hope' in Russian detention
Until then, Gershkovich will remain in a cell at Moscow's Lefortovo prison, where his lawyers say he's been reading books like Leo Tolstoy's classic War and Peace , watching cooking shows and answering letters from well-wishers around the globe.
The U.S. State Department has labeled Gershkovich "wrongfully detained" — a designation that initiates government efforts to secure his release.
"Journalism is not a crime," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said in a statement last week. "We call for the Russian Federation to immediately release Mr. Gershkovich."
Following Tuesday's court ruling, The Wall Street Journal 's publisher and editor-in-chief said in a statement , "While we expected this development, it is nonetheless disappointing." They added, "Evan is wrongfully detained and the charges of espionage against him are false. We demand his immediate release and are doing everything in our power to secure it."
Senior Russian officials have repeatedly insisted, without providing evidence, that Gershkovich was caught "red-handed" trying to gather state secrets about a military factory.
Russia's Foreign Ministry has also hinted at a potential future prisoner swap for Gershkovich, but only once the legal process runs its course.

Local News | Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich loses appeal and will stay in Russian jail at least through November

MOSCOW — Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich lost an appeal Tuesday to be released from jail on espionage charges, meaning he will remain behind bars at least through Nov. 30.
Gershkovich, 31, had a mostly blank expression as he appeared in the defendant’s glass cage in Moscow City Court in blue shirt, T-shirt and jeans. He marked six months in custody on Sept. 29.
It was the second time in less than a month he had appeared before a judge to appeal an August decision to extend his pre-trial detention through November. On Sept. 19, the court declined to hear the appeal, citing unspecified procedural violations.
The U.S. Embassy in Moscow said in a statement that it was “deeply disappointed” that Gershkovich’s appeal was rejected, adding: “Evan should be released.”
The journalist was detained in March while on a reporting trip to the city of Yekaterinburg, about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow.
The court proceedings are closed because prosecutors say details of the criminal case are classified.
Russia’s Federal Security Service alleged Gershkovich, “acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.”

Gershkovich and the Journal deny the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained. Russian authorities haven’t detailed any evidence to support the espionage charges.
He is being held at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, notorious for its harsh conditions. Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be charged with espionage in Russia since 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB.
Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips after U.S.-Russian tensions soared when Russia sent troops into Ukraine. At least two U.S. citizens arrested in Russia in recent years — including WNBA star Brittney Griner — have been exchanged for Russians jailed in the U.S.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has said it will consider a swap for Gershkovich only after a verdict in his trial. In Russia, espionage trials can last for more than a year.

World News | Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich loses appeal, will remain in Russia jail until end of November

Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter detained in Russia on widely contested spying allegations, has had his appeal for release rejected , meaning he will remain behind bars through at least the end of November.
The 31-year-old journalist has been in Russian custody since March 29, when he was arrested during a reporting trip in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, about 800 miles away from the Moscow prison where he’s currently being housed. Gershkovich is being held on a single count of espionage, a charge he, the Wall Street Journal and the U.S. government have repeatedly denied.
Dressed in blue jeans and a checkered navy shirt, Gershkovich remained mostly expressionless as he stood within the defendant’s glass cage in the Moscow City courtroom. It marked his second appearance before a judge to appeal an August decision to extend his pre-trial detention through November.
“The decision of the Lefortovo Court of Moscow dated Aug. 24, 2023 on extending the period of detention in relation to Gershkovich until Nov. 30, 2023 is left unchanged, the appeal is not satisfied,” the court declared Tuesday.
Under Russian law, prosecutors are required to request the pre-trial detention be continued every few months.

Dow Jones, the Journal’s parent company, blasted the court’s decision on Tuesday, noting that while it’s disappointing, it is not unexpected.
“It has now been more than six months since Evan’s unjust arrest, and we are outraged that he continues to be wrongfully detained,” a company spokeswoman said. “The accusation against him is categorically false, and we call for his immediate release.”
In a joint follow-up statement, WSJ Editor in Chief Emma Tucker and Chief Executive of Dow Jones Almar Latour said the company “will not rest until [Gershkovich] is home.”
Gershkovich — who covers Russia, Ukraine and the former Soviet Union for the Wall Street Journal — is the first American reporter to be charged with espionage in Russia since 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB.
Gerskovich is currently being held at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, which is notorious for its harsh conditions. In the months since his capture, Russian officials have said they’d consider a prisoner swap , but only after his verdict is handed down.
An espionage trial can drag out for more than a year in Russia.
