Free Printable Compare and Contrast Graphic Organizers. Here is a free collection of compare and contrast templates for students, teachers and kids. These printables are a great help if you’re writing a compare and contrast essay, trying to solve a problem, or simply getting your thoughts down. They’ll be useful in various school activities, including classroom exercises and homework. In order to download these files, click on the image below. The pdf will then open up in your browser, and from there you can save it to your computer. Each compare and contrast sheet is 8.5″ x 11″ and will fit on standard printer paper. The first and second graphic organizers below have ruled lines for you to write on. The second is an entirely blank compare and contrast chart. The final compare and contrast diagram is in color.

Graphic organizers are used to improve students' comprehension of stories, as well as build writing and vocabulary skills . This list provides a wide variety of graphic organizers for a variety of English learning tasks. Each graphic organizer includes an empty template, an example graphic organizer with entries and a discussion of appropriate uses in class.
Spider Map Organizer
Use the spider map organizer in reading comprehension activities to help learners analyze texts they are reading. Learners should place the main topic, theme or concept in the center of the diagram. Learners should then place the main ideas that support the topic on the various arms. Details supporting each of these ideas should be provided in the slots that branch off from the main idea arms.
Spider Map Organizer for Writing
The spider map organizer can be employed to help learners develop their writing skills . As in the case of reading comprehension activities, learners place the main topic, theme or concept in the center of the diagram. Main ideas and the details supporting those ideas are then filled in on the supporting branches, or 'legs' of the spider map organizer.

Learners should place each event in the order of its occurrence in the series of events chain. Learners can also write down full sentences taken from their reading to help them learn how different tenses relate to each other as a story unfolds. Then can further analyze these sentences by noticing the linking language that has been used to connect the series of events.

Structured Overview Organizer
Use the structured overview organizer in vocabulary activities to help learners group related vocabulary. Learners should place a topic at the top of the organizer. After that, they break out the main objects, characteristics, actions, etc. into each category. Finally, students fill in the categories with the related vocabulary. Make sure that this vocabulary relates back to the main topic.

Much like the spider map organizer, learners place the main topic, theme or concept at the top of the diagram. Main ideas and the details supporting those ideas are then filled out in the supporting boxes and lines of the structured overview organizer.
Structured overview organizers are especially useful as vocabulary maps by category. They can also be used to organize main and supporting ideas.
Here is a structured overview organizer that can be used as an example for vocabulary building.
Learners place the main vocabulary topic or area at the top of the diagram. They fill in vocabulary in categories by character, action, word type, etc.
Venn diagram organizers are especially useful in creating vocabulary categories that share certain characteristics.
Venn Diagrams for Vocabulary
Use the Venn diagram organizer in vocabulary activities to help learners discover similar and dissimilar characteristics between vocabulary used with two different subjects, themes, topics, etc. Learners should place a topic at the top of the organizer. After that, they break out characteristics, actions, etc. into each category. Vocabulary that is not common to each subject should be placed in the outline area, while vocabulary that is shared by each subject should be placed in the middle.

This Venn Diagram with 3 circles helps students identify shared features of three objects or ideas. They can organize similarities and differences before comparing and contrasting:
- three characters.
- three different versions of the same story.
- a literary work and two other pieces of art work (song, painting, dramatic performance, or film).
- any three items that share some characteristics.
Where the circles overlap, students write shared characteristics (things that are the same). In the circles to the left, right, and top, students will list features that are specific to each object (things that are different). Venn Diagrams may be used in any grade level or content area. If this graphic organizer is new to students, practice with topics that have obvious similarities and differences. Before the students use the Venn Diagram, 3 Circles, create an example that compares and contrasts three well-known topics such as famous actors, fruits and vegetables, television shows, or sports.
- For younger students and kinesthetic learners create large Venn Diagrams on the ground using rope, jump ropes, or hula hoops. Have students compare and contrast topics by moving around from circle to circle explaining why they have chosen each spot. For example, in a social studies classroom the students could use this activity to understand countries during wartime. They could compare their army size, general population, war technology, strategies, leadership, and motivations.
- As an icebreaker or beginning of the year activity, randomly place three students together and have them use the Venn Diagram to organize their similarities and differences. Have the students rotate throughout the class and continue to make different groups of three comparing and contrasting characteristics.
- Use information from completed Venn Diagrams to further practice writing compare and contrast statements with the Compare and Contrast Tool Kit .
- At the end of a unit, chapter, or literature piece, have the students use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast main characters that they have learned about. Use this activity to re-teach or as a culminating activity.
