How to Cite a Podcast in APA Style | Format & Examples

Published on December 9, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on December 27, 2023.

To cite a podcast episode in APA Style , list the host as author, followed by the label “(Host),” the date, the episode title and number, the description “[Audio podcast episode],” the name of the podcast, the production company, and a URL if available.

If you listened through an app and don’t know the URL, omit it. If episodes are not numbered, this element can also be omitted. A timestamp can be used in an in-text citation to highlight a specific moment from the episode when quoting.

Citing an entire podcast series in apa style, citing a video podcast, frequently asked questions about apa style citations.

If you don’t refer to a specific episode but to a podcast series more generally, it’s appropriate for your reference entry to cover the whole series.

In this case, you should usually still list the host as author, but you have the option of listing the executive producers instead (e.g. if hosts vary by episode). For the date, list a range of years showing what period the series ran for.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

A podcast that takes the form of a video is cited very similarly to an audio podcast. The only difference is that you write “Video podcast” in square brackets rather than “Audio podcast.”

When citing a podcast episode in APA Style , the podcast’s host is listed as author , accompanied by a label identifying their role, e.g. Glass, I. (Host).

When citing a whole podcast series, if different episodes have different hosts, list the executive producer(s) instead. Again, include a label identifying their role, e.g. Lechtenberg, S. (Producer).

When you need to highlight a specific moment in a video or audio source, use a timestamp in your APA in-text citation . Just include the timestamp from the start of the part you’re citing. For example:

  • Title of the podcast
  • Title of the episode
  • Publisher of the podcast or where you watched it
  • Date the podcast was posted

Here’s how the above example would be cited in MLA 9 :

Chang, Ailsa, host. “Why Scientists Can’t Explain All the Appeal of an Eclipse.”  Morning Edition , NPR, 11 Aug. 2017. www.npr.org/2017/ 08/11/542753070/scientists-can-t-explain-all-the-appeal-of-an-eclipse.

To cite an interview that was done on a podcast, include the name of the podcast host, publication date, title of the episode featuring the interview, title of the podcast, and publisher. Following are a template and example for how to cite an interview that was done on a podcast in an APA-style reference list.

Podcast Host’s Surname, F. M. (Host). (Publication Date). Title of the episode (episode number) [Format]. In Title of the Podcast . Production Company. URL

Shepard, D. (Host). (2021, November 25). Chris Wallace [Audio podcast interview]. In Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard . Armchair Expert Podcast. https://armchairexpertpod.com/pods/chris-wallace

Points to remember

If the interviewee’s name does not appear in the author field of your citation, you can include the interviewee’s name in the narrative of your paper instead.

The episode number can be excluded from your citation if the podcast’s episodes are not numbered.

Do not add a period after the URL.

To format an APA-style in-text citation for a quote that came from a speaker on a podcast who is not the host, include the name of the host, the publication date, and the time stamp. Citing Podcasts or other audio works

Tips for citing podcasts in APA 7th edition (p. 344-346).

  • When adding a reference for a podcast, list the host as the author, if no host is listed, look to see if an executive producer is listed. Add either the host's or the producer's role in brackets. For example: Smith, J. (Host).
  • If the host is not listed on the website, they are usually introduced in the first few minutes of the podcast.
  • It's also important to specify whether the podcast an audio or a video. Add this after the title. For example: Reflections from a nurse on COVID-19 [Audio podcast].
  • When adding an in-text citation for a direct quote from a podcast, make sure to add a timestamp after the date. For example, (Smith, 2018, 5:27)

Livingston, E. (Host). (2017, June 20).  Medication errors in hospitals - It's everyone's fault  [Audio podcast] . JN Learning.  https://edhub.ama-assn.org/jn-learning/audio-player/14505877

In general, the in-text citation in APA includes only the last name(s) of the contributors (or authors) and the publication year. The contributor for an audio, video, or audiovisual work depends on the type of media. For a podcast, the last name of the host or the executive producer should be used in the author’s place. Therefore, to cite a podcast in an in-text citation,  include the last name(s) of the host(s), or executive producer(s), and the year. If you cite a podcast series, include the beginning and the ending year of the podcast with a dash between the dates (Green, 2000-2020).

Below are templates and examples of how to format an in-text citation for a podcast in APA:

Narrative: Host’s Surname/Executive Producer’s Surname (Year)

Parenthetical: (Host’s Surname/Executive Producer’s Surname, Year)

Narrative: Raymond (2018)

Parenthetical: (Raymond, 2018)

An APA reference list entry for a podcast should include the following elements: name of the podcast’s host(s), their role (in parentheses), the publication date of the episode (or span of years the podcast aired, if citing the podcast as a whole), the title of the podcast and the specific episode being cited, the episode number, a description of the podcast (in square brackets), production company, and URL (if available).

Note that the specific episode title should not be listed in quotation marks or italics. The title of the podcast, however, should be italicized in your citation.

The below template and example show how to cite a podcast episode in a reference list in APA style.

Host’s Last Name, First Initial. (Host). (Publication date). Episode title (Season #, Episode #) [Audio podcast episode]. In Podcast title . Production Company. URL

Imperioli, M., & Schirripa, S. (Hosts). (2021, December 20). Made in America (No. 91) [Audio podcast episode]. In Talking Sopranos . Podjams. https://talkingsopranos.simplecast.com/episodes/episode-91-made-in-america-rkatzv_y

Podcasts are a source of valuable and citable information. Podcasts are digital audio or video broadcasts that can be accessed and downloaded online or downloaded to personal devices. In some instances, podcasts may contain both audio and visual components. They are copyrighted information, so it is necessary provide a reference to avoid copyright infringement and plagiarism risks. APA provides separate formats for an entire podcast, a transcript of a podcast, and an individual episode.

APA Format for Citing the Whole Podcast

For a podcast, the main contributor is the “author,” who is the host(s), producer(s), or writer(s).

The formats for the in-text citations for the podcast are as shown below. Because a podcast does not have page or paragraph numbers and section headings, this information will not be included in the citation.

According to Watson (2022), teachers need to revitalize themselves to avoid stress.

Parenthetical

Teachers need to revitalize themselves to avoid stress (Watson, 2012).

If you are providing a direct quote from a podcast, you need to provide a timestamp after the date, as shown in the example below:

Watson stated that “teachers should share with their colleagues curriculum-planning tips, effective lessons, and units” (Watson, 2022, 7:13).

In the reference list, provide the name of the host(s) and/or the executive producer (if it is known), and include their roles in parenthesis. Provide the type of podcast, audio or video. Provide the URL of the podcast. If you did not obtain the podcast online, then nothing is needed at the end.

If the podcast is still on the air, you need to provide the year the podcast started airing and write the word “present” after the date that it started, as shown in the example below:

(2019−present)

If the podcast has ended and aired for multiple years, you will need to provide the start and end years, as shown in the example below:

(2019−2022)

If the podcast started and ended in the same year, provide only that year, as shown in the example below:

The following is the template for the podcast and an example:

Host, H. (Host) &/or Producer, A. (producer). (Date). Title of podcast . [Audio podcast]. Title of webpage. URL

Watson, A.  (Host). Truth for teachers . (2019-2022). [Audio podcast]. EmergingEdTech https://truthforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/

APA Format for the Transcript of a Podcast

If you did not listen to the podcast, but read the transcript of it, the format for citations is the same. However, for the reference list, you should put “Audio podcast transcript” in brackets, as shown in the template and example below:

APA Format for an Episode of the Podcast

If you are just referring to one episode of the podcast, the formats for the in-text citations are the same. For the reference list, the format is the same as the general format, except that you should not put the title of the episode in italics. Also, you will need to provide the episode number and the date that the podcast episode first aired, and the word “In” before the title of the podcast, as shown in the template and example below:

Host, A. (Host) &/or Producer, A. (Executive Producer). (year, month day). Title of episode (No. of episode) [Audio podcast episode]. In Title of podcast episode . Title of webpage. URL

Watson, A.  (Host). (2021, February 7). Simplify your blended learning workload. (No. 214) [Audio podcast episode]. In Truth for teachers . EmergingEdTech. https://truthforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/

If you only read the transcript of the episode, then you need to write “Audio podcast transcript” in brackets, as shown in the example below:

Watson, A.  (Host). (2021, February 7). Simplify your blended learning workload. (No. 214) [Audio podcast transcript]. In Truth for teachers . EmergingEdTech. https://truthforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/

The proper way to cite podcasts and podcasts episodes can be found on page 345 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.). If the URL of a podcast isn't known because it was accessed via an app, omit the URL. The host is the author and make sure to specify the type of podcast (audio or video) in brackets. If the podcast episode doesn't have an episode number you can omit that piece of information.

How to Cite a Podcast | APA, MLA, Chicago & Vancouver

apa in text citation podcast

We all know there are citation rules for books and journal articles, but modern media come in many more formats, and it might not always be clear how they need to be referenced. Here, we look at the rules for how to cite a podcast and walk you through the common referencing styles .

When to Cite a Podcast in an Academic Paper

You should cite a podcast like you would give credit to any other medium: when you are directly quoting from it, when you are using thoughts and ideas you have heard someone express in a podcast, or when you are summarizing a podcast’s fundamental theory or argument. Not doing so constitutes plagiarism, just like presenting other people’s ideas and work as your own does, no matter what source you took your content from.

How you cite a podcast in a paper depends on the reference style you are following—you need to pay attention to small details like italicization, punctuation, and quotation marks, even if they seem trivial. And no matter what style guide you apply, you need to include the following basic information:

  • Host/narrator’s name
  • Podcast/series/episode titles
  • Production/publication date/period
  • Series/episode numbers
  • URL or app/platform

Let’s look at the (sometimes subtle) differences between the most common style guides when it comes to podcast references.

Citing a Podcast in APA Style

APA style podcast references include the name(s) of the host(s) followed by “Host” in parentheses, the publication/production date of the episode in parentheses, the title of the episode in sentence case, the episode number (if applicable) in parentheses, the medium type in brackets, the title of the podcast in italics, the production company, and the URL (if available online):

Host last name, Initials. (Host). (Year, Month Day). Title of episode (No. of episode) [Audio podcast episode]. In Title of podcast . Production Company. URL

Note: If you access the podcast from a platform or app rather than a specific URL, you can omit the URL and include a note indicating the platform (e.g., “Retrieved from Spotify”).

Citing a specific podcast episode in APA Style

This is probably the most common podcast citation type, referring to something a host or guest said in a specific episode of a podcast:

Smith, J. (Host) (2022, September 15). The Science of Sleep (No. 42) [Audio podcast episode]. In Mind and Body Matters . ABC Podcasts. https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters/episode42

Citing a podcast series in APA Style

If you want to cite an entire podcast series, include the title of the series after the production/publication period (not date) instead of the title of the episode, and replace the “episode” in parentheses following the title with “series”:

Smith, J. (Host). (2022-present). Mind and Body Matters [Audio podcast series]. ABC Podcasts. Retrieved from https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters

Note that you can either list the host as author or, if hosts vary across episodes, replace them with the executive producers. You indicate that by replacing the “Host” after the name with “Producer”.

Citing a video podcast in APA Style

It does not matter for your APA citation if you refer to a video rather than an audio podcast, except that you need to replace the “Audio podcast” in square brackets with “Video podcast”:

Smith, J. (Host). (2022-present). Mind and Body Matters [Video podcast series]. ABC Podcasts. Retrieved from https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters

Note that you can highlight a specific quote in an in-text citation by adding a timestamp.

How to cite a podcast episode:

If you are unsure, the Wordvice APA Citation Generator can help you check if your references are in line with APA style before you press that “submit” button!

Citing a Podcast in MLA Style

MLA style podcast references cite the same information but in a slightly different format. Include the following, and note the quotation marks and italics: Host last name, First name, host. “Title of Episode.” Title of Podcast , Publisher, Day Month Year, URL (if available).

Citing a specific podcast episode in MLA Style

The episode number follows the title of the podcast in MLA style:

Smith, John, host. “The Science of Sleep.” Mind and Body Matters , episode 15, ABC Podcasts, 15 Sept. 2022, www.example.com/mindandbodymatters/episode42.

Citing a podcast series in MLA Style

To cite a whole podcast series instead of a specific episode in MLA style, omit the episode title and number and list only the series title:

Host last name, First name, host. Podcast name . Publisher, year range, URL.

For example:

Smith, John, host. Mind and Body Matters . ABC Podcasts, 2022-present, https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters

Note that you can always replace the “host” after the name with the role of the person you want to cite or who made the most relevant contribution and therefore should be mentioned, depending on the context and purpose of your citation. The cited individual can be the host of the show, the narrator , a guest , or the producer .

Citing a video podcast in MLA Style

Because MLA podcast references do not mention the specific medium (unless “audio” or “video” is in the title or in the name of the publisher), citations of video and audio podcasts look identical.

MLA podcast citation examples

Or, if you listened to the episode on an app, only provide the details the app lists (the season/episode numbers and publisher might be unavailable), name it, and mention which version you are using to access the podcast:

Still unsure whether you are citing all those podcasts correctly? Use our MLA Citation Generator to make sure your references are in the right format.

Citing a Podcast in Chicago Style

A bibliography entry for a Chicago-style podcast reference looks like this:

Host Last name, First Name. “Episode Title”. Produced by Producer. Podcast Title , Month Date, Year of publication. Podcast, format, Length in 00:00. URL.

Please note that Chicago-style citations vary depending on whether you are following the author-date or notes-bibliography system. The examples at the end of this section show how the different versions of the same citation appear depending on your format.

Citing a specific podcast episode in Chicago Style

Chicago-style citations do not necessarily include episode numbers, but the episode title needs to be presented first after the host, in quotation marks:

Smith, John. “The Science of Sleep.” Produced by ABC Podcasts. Mind and Body Matters , September 15, 2022. Podcast, MP3 audio, 30:04. https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters/episode42

Citing a podcast series in Chicago Style

If you are citing the entire series of a podcast in Chicago style, omit the episode title, provide just the production/publication year or the time period, and leave out the episode length:

John Smith, Mind and Body Matters. Produced by ABC Podcasts, 2022-present, Podcast, MP3 audio, https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters

Citing a video podcast in Chicago Style

To refer to a video podcast, simply replace the “MP3 audio” after the date and year of publication with the correct format:

Smith, John. “The Science of Sleep.” Produced by ABC Podcasts. Mind and Body Matters , September 15, 2022. Podcast, MP4 video, 30:04. https://www.example.com/mindandbodymatters/episode42

Chicago podcast citation examples

How to cite an entire podcast series:

Let our Chicago Citation Generator help you cite podcasts correctly in Chicago 17th style.

Citing a Podcast in Vancouver Style

The Vancouver style primarily focuses on biomedical literature and does not have specific instructions for citing podcasts. However, you can adapt the citation format for online audio or video content to create a citation for a podcast in Vancouver style, for example like this:

Host(s) or creator(s). Title of episode [Type of medium]. Title of podcast. Production Company; Year. Available from: URL or DOI (if available).

Another variation of Vancouver-style podcast references could look like this:

Creator AA, Creator BB. Title of episode. Title of Programme: subtitle [format]. Place of recording: Publisher; Year Date of recording [cited Year Date Cited]. Available from: Internet address.

Note that Vancouver-style citations always differ depending on the requirements of the journal you are submitting to and that many different variations are acceptable as long as they contain the relevant information and are consistent within a document. Make sure you check the author guidelines and apply any specific rules your target journal might have.

Bettiza, Sofia. Mystery on Maggiore [Internet podcast]. 5 Questions On. BBC Sounds; 8 June 2023. Available from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0ft2ywx.

Citing a podcast series in Vancouver Style

Since every episode of this series is presented by a different host (which is often the case), start with the specific streaming service that produces and publishes the podcast:

BBC Sounds. 5 Questions On [Internet podcast]. BBC; 2018-present. Available from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p0cvzk80.

Citing a video podcast in Vancouver Style

Video podcasts do not differ from audio podcasts in Vancouver style—just indicate the specific format in brackets or parentheses after the episode or podcast title.

In-Text Citations: The Basics

Note:  This page reflects the latest version of the APA Publication Manual (i.e., APA 7), which released in October 2019. The equivalent resource for the older APA 6 style  can be found here .

Reference citations in text are covered on pages 261-268 of the Publication Manual. What follows are some general guidelines for referring to the works of others in your essay.

Note:  On pages 117-118, the Publication Manual suggests that authors of research papers should use the past tense or present perfect tense for signal phrases that occur in the literature review and procedure descriptions (for example, Jones (1998)  found  or Jones (1998)  has found ...). Contexts other than traditionally-structured research writing may permit the simple present tense (for example, Jones (1998)  finds ).

APA Citation Basics

When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, like, for example, (Jones, 1998). One complete reference for each source should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.

If you are referring to an idea from another work but  NOT  directly quoting the material, or making reference to an entire book, article or other work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication and not the page number in your in-text reference.

On the other hand, if you are directly quoting or borrowing from another work, you should include the page number at the end of the parenthetical citation. Use the abbreviation “p.” (for one page) or “pp.” (for multiple pages) before listing the page number(s). Use an en dash for page ranges. For example, you might write (Jones, 1998, p. 199) or (Jones, 1998, pp. 199–201). This information is reiterated below.

Regardless of how they are referenced, all sources that are cited in the text must appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.

In-text citation capitalization, quotes, and italics/underlining

  • Always capitalize proper nouns, including author names and initials: D. Jones.
  • If you refer to the title of a source within your paper, capitalize all words that are four letters long or greater within the title of a source:  Permanence and Change . Exceptions apply to short words that are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs:  Writing New Media ,  There Is Nothing Left to Lose .

( Note:  in your References list, only the first word of a title will be capitalized:  Writing new media .)

  • When capitalizing titles, capitalize both words in a hyphenated compound word:  Natural-Born Cyborgs .
  • Capitalize the first word after a dash or colon: "Defining Film Rhetoric: The Case of Hitchcock's  Vertigo ."
  • If the title of the work is italicized in your reference list, italicize it and use title case capitalization in the text:  The Closing of the American Mind ;  The Wizard of Oz ;  Friends .
  • If the title of the work is not italicized in your reference list, use double quotation marks and title case capitalization (even though the reference list uses sentence case): "Multimedia Narration: Constructing Possible Worlds;" "The One Where Chandler Can't Cry."

Short quotations

If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and page number for the reference (preceded by "p." for a single page and “pp.” for a span of multiple pages, with the page numbers separated by an en dash).

You can introduce the quotation with a signal phrase that includes the author's last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses.

If you do not include the author’s name in the text of the sentence, place the author's last name, the year of publication, and the page number in parentheses after the quotation.

Long quotations

Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer in a free-standing block of typewritten lines and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, indented 1/2 inch from the left margin, i.e., in the same place you would begin a new paragraph. Type the entire quotation on the new margin, and indent the first line of any subsequent paragraph within the quotation 1/2 inch from the new margin. Maintain double-spacing throughout, but do not add an extra blank line before or after it. The parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark.

Because block quotation formatting is difficult for us to replicate in the OWL's content management system, we have simply provided a screenshot of a generic example below.

This image shows how to format a long quotation in an APA seventh edition paper.

Formatting example for block quotations in APA 7 style.

Quotations from sources without pages

Direct quotations from sources that do not contain pages should not reference a page number. Instead, you may reference another logical identifying element: a paragraph, a chapter number, a section number, a table number, or something else. Older works (like religious texts) can also incorporate special location identifiers like verse numbers. In short: pick a substitute for page numbers that makes sense for your source.

Summary or paraphrase

If you are paraphrasing an idea from another work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your in-text reference and may omit the page numbers. APA guidelines, however, do encourage including a page range for a summary or paraphrase when it will help the reader find the information in a longer work.

Introduction

Welcome to the world of podcasting, where audio content reigns supreme! With the rise in popularity of podcasts, it has become increasingly important to know how to cite them in academic and professional settings. In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of citing podcasts in APA format, ensuring that you can confidently give credit to the audio sources that have enriched your research or discussions.

As an SEO writer, it is crucial to understand the basics of APA format and how it applies to different types of media. The American Psychological Association (APA) has established a set of guidelines for citing sources in academic and scientific writing. These guidelines ensure consistency, credibility, and attribution to the original content creators.

When it comes to podcasts, the challenge lies in adapting the traditional APA format to suit audio-based content. This involves citing individual podcast episodes, podcast series, and even podcast transcripts.

Throughout this article, we will provide you with clear and concise instructions on how to properly cite podcasts in APA format. We will cover everything from citing individual episodes to creating in-text citations for podcasts. Additionally, we will share some helpful tips and best practices to make the process of citing podcasts as seamless as possible.

Understanding how to cite podcasts not only demonstrates your commitment to academic integrity, but it also allows your readers or listeners to explore the sources you used and further engage with the content. So, whether you’re writing a research paper, creating a presentation, or simply want to give credit where it’s due, let’s dive into the world of podcast citation in APA format.

Understanding APA Format

Before we delve into the specifics of citing podcasts in APA format, let’s take a moment to understand the basic principles of APA style. APA format is widely used in the social sciences, including psychology, sociology, and education.

The main goal of APA format is to provide a standardized structure for academic and scientific writing. It ensures clarity, consistency, and proper attribution of sources, allowing readers to easily locate the referenced material. Additionally, APA format emphasizes the use of a clear and concise writing style that promotes readability.

When citing sources in APA format, there are several key elements to consider:

  • Author(s): Include the last name and initials of the authors for each source. If there are multiple authors, separate their names with commas and use an ampersand before the last author’s name.
  • Title: The title of the source should be in sentence case, meaning only the first word and proper nouns are capitalized.
  • Publication Information: Include the name of the publisher or the journal, the volume and issue number, and the page range for articles.
  • Date: Use the year of publication or, for online sources, the date of retrieval.
  • URL or DOI: If citing an online source, provide the URL or the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to ensure that the reader can access the original material.

It is essential to follow these guidelines meticulously to create accurate and reliable citations. The APA Publication Manual, currently in its 7th edition, serves as the definitive resource for understanding and implementing APA format rules.

Now that we have a foundational understanding of APA format, let’s explore how to apply these principles specifically to podcast citation.

Citing an Episode in APA

When citing a specific episode from a podcast, the key elements to include in the citation are:

  • Author(s): Provide the last name and initials of the hosts or creators of the podcast. If the episode has a guest speaker, include their name as well.
  • Date: The year of publication for the specific episode.
  • Episode Title: Use sentence case for the title of the episode, capitalizing only the first word and proper nouns.
  • Title of Podcast: Use sentence case for the title of the podcast.
  • Media Type: Specify that it is a podcast episode.
  • URL: Include the URL where the episode can be accessed.

Here is an example of how to cite a podcast episode in APA format:

Last Name, First Initial(s). (Year). Episode title. Title of Podcast . [Audio podcast episode]. Retrieved from URL

For instance:

Smith, J. D., & Johnson, A. B. (2022). The Power of Mindfulness. Positive Vibes Podcast . [Audio podcast episode]. Retrieved from https://www.example.com/positive-vibes-ep1

Keep in mind that specific formatting rules may vary depending on the referencing style you are using or the platform where you are citing the episode. Always double-check the guidelines or consult the APA Publication Manual for additional clarifications.

Now that you have the basics of citing an episode in APA format, let’s move on to how to cite an entire podcast series.

Citing a Podcast Series in APA

When citing an entire podcast series, you will need to focus on the overall podcast rather than a specific episode. The key elements to include in the citation are:

  • Author(s): Provide the last name and initials of the hosts or creators of the podcast.
  • Date: The year when the podcast series was first published.
  • Title of Podcast: Use sentence case for the title of the podcast series, capitalizing only the first word and proper nouns.
  • Media Type: Specify that it is a podcast series.
  • Publisher: If there is a publisher affiliated with the podcast, include their name.
  • URL: Include the URL where the podcast series can be accessed.

Here is an example of how to cite a podcast series in APA format:

Last Name, First Initial(s). (Year). Title of Podcast . [Audio podcast series]. Publisher. Retrieved from URL

Davis, M. J., & Adams, E. L. (2022). The Science Hour . [Audio podcast series]. Science Publications. Retrieved from https://www.example.com/the-science-hour

Remember to use proper capitalization and punctuation in your citation, following the APA format guidelines. Additionally, be aware that some podcast series may have associated transcripts. Let’s explore how to cite a podcast transcript in APA format next.

Citing a Transcript in APA

In some cases, you may need to cite a transcript of a podcast episode or series, especially if you accessed the information from a transcript resource. When citing a podcast transcript in APA format, consider including the following elements:

  • Author(s): Provide the names of the individuals or entities responsible for creating the transcript.
  • Date: The year the transcription was created or published.
  • Title of Transcript: Use sentence case for the title of the transcript, capitalizing only the first word and proper nouns.
  • Media Type: Indicate that it is a transcript.
  • URL: Include the URL where the transcript can be accessed.

Here is an example of how to cite a podcast transcript in APA format:

Last Name, First Initial(s). (Year). Title of Transcript . [Transcript]. Retrieved from URL

Johnson, S. A. (2022). How to Build Healthy Habits . [Transcript]. Retrieved from https://www.example.com/how-to-build-healthy-habits-transcript

Always ensure the accuracy and reliability of the transcript source when citing it. Additionally, consult the APA Publication Manual or your institution’s guidelines for any specific formatting requirements or variations.

Now that you are familiar with how to cite a podcast transcript, let’s explore how to incorporate in-text citations for podcasts effectively.

In-text Citations for Podcasts

In-text citations allow you to acknowledge the sources you used within the body of your work. When citing a podcast in APA format, there are a few ways to incorporate in-text citations depending on how you mention the podcast:

  • Paraphrasing: When paraphrasing information from a podcast, include the author’s last name and the year of publication in parentheses. For example: (Smith & Johnson, 2022).
  • Direct Quotes: If you directly quote a segment from a podcast, include the author(s)’s last name, the year of publication, and the timestamp of the quote in minutes and seconds. For example: (Doe, 2021, 14:32).
  • No Author: If the podcast does not have a specific author, use the name of the podcast as the author in the citation. For example: (Positive Vibes Podcast, 2022).

It is important to note that APA format does not require page numbers for in-text citations in podcasts. Instead, you should use timestamps to indicate the location of the information within the episode.

Remember to place the in-text citations immediately after the information you are citing and to include a corresponding entry in your reference list at the end of your document.

Now that we have covered the essentials of in-text citations for podcasts, let’s explore some tips and best practices to ensure accurate and effective podcast citations in APA format.

Tips and Best Practices for Podcast Citations

When creating citations for podcasts in APA format, it’s important to keep the following tips and best practices in mind:

  • Check for Updates: Podcasts are often updated with new episodes, so when citing a specific episode, make sure to include the publication date of that episode.
  • Be Consistent: Use the same format and style throughout your citations. Ensure that the punctuation, capitalization, and italicization are consistent for all podcast citations.
  • Include Relevant Information: Provide enough details in your citation to help your readers locate the specific episode or series you are referencing. Include the author(s), date, episode or series title, and the URL where possible.
  • Double-Check URLs: Make sure the URLs you include in your citations are accurate and functional. It’s a good practice to test the URLs before finalizing your citations.
  • Cite More Than One Episode: If you are referencing multiple episodes from the same podcast series, create separate citations for each episode to provide specific information and enhance the clarity of your citations.
  • Consult the Official Guidelines: While this article provides a general overview, it’s always a good idea to consult the official APA Publication Manual or your institution’s guidelines for any specific formatting requirements or variations.

By following these tips and best practices, you can ensure accurate and consistent citations for podcasts, enhancing the credibility and scholarly integrity of your work.

Now that we have covered the essentials of citing podcasts in APA format, you are equipped with the knowledge to properly credit and reference podcast sources in your academic or professional writing.

Citing podcasts in APA format may initially seem challenging, but with a solid understanding of the basic guidelines and some key tips, you can confidently and accurately cite podcast episodes, series, and transcripts in your academic or professional work.

Remember to include the necessary information such as the author(s), date, title, media type, and URL to ensure that your citations are complete and easily accessible to your readers.

Consistency is key when it comes to formatting your citations. Ensure that you maintain a consistent style for capitalization, punctuation, and italicization throughout your references list.

Additionally, be mindful of any updates or additions to the podcast series, as it may impact the information you include in your citations. Double-checking URLs is also essential to ensure they are accurate and functional.

While this article provides a comprehensive overview, it’s important to consult the official APA Publication Manual or your institution’s guidelines for any specific requirements or variations.

By properly citing podcasts, you not only demonstrate respect for intellectual property rights but also allow your readers to engage with the sources you used and explore the podcast content further.
