How to Cite a Podcast in APA Style | Format & Examples

Published on December 9, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on June 16, 2022.

To cite a podcast episode in APA Style , list the host as author, followed by the label “(Host),” the date, the episode title and number, the description “[Audio podcast episode],” the name of the podcast, the production company, and a URL if available.

If you listened through an app and don’t know the URL, omit it. If episodes are not numbered, this element can also be omitted. A timestamp can be used in an in-text citation to highlight a specific moment from the episode when quoting.

Citing an entire podcast series in apa style, citing a video podcast, frequently asked questions about apa style citations.

If you don’t refer to a specific episode but to a podcast series more generally, it’s appropriate for your reference entry to cover the whole series.

In this case, you should usually still list the host as author, but you have the option of listing the executive producers instead (e.g. if hosts vary by episode). For the date, list a range of years showing what period the series ran for.

A podcast that takes the form of a video is cited very similarly to an audio podcast. The only difference is that you write “Video podcast” in square brackets rather than “Audio podcast.”

When citing a podcast episode in APA Style , the podcast’s host is listed as author , accompanied by a label identifying their role, e.g. Glass, I. (Host).

When citing a whole podcast series, if different episodes have different hosts, list the executive producer(s) instead. Again, include a label identifying their role, e.g. Lechtenberg, S. (Producer).

When you need to highlight a specific moment in a video or audio source, use a timestamp in your APA in-text citation . Just include the timestamp from the start of the part you’re citing. For example:

Citing Podcasts or other audio works

Tips for citing podcasts in APA 7th edition (p. 344-346).

  • When adding a reference for a podcast, list the host as the author, if no host is listed, look to see if an executive producer is listed. Add either the host's or the producer's role in brackets. For example: Smith, J. (Host).
  • If the host is not listed on the website, they are usually introduced in the first few minutes of the podcast.
  • It's also important to specify whether the podcast an audio or a video. Add this after the title. For example: Reflections from a nurse on COVID-19 [Audio podcast].
  • When adding an in-text citation for a direct quote from a podcast, make sure to add a timestamp after the date. For example, (Smith, 2018, 5:27)

Livingston, E. (Host). (2017, June 20).  Medication errors in hospitals - It's everyone's fault  [Audio podcast] . JN Learning.  https://edhub.ama-assn.org/jn-learning/audio-player/14505877

Citing a Podcast in APA Style (7th Edition)

Published by steve tippins on february 11, 2022 february 11, 2022.

Last Updated on: 29th August 2022, 08:10 am

Podcasts are a source of valuable and citable information. Podcasts are digital audio or video broadcasts that can be accessed and downloaded online or downloaded to personal devices. In some instances, podcasts may contain both audio and visual components. They are copyrighted information, so it is necessary provide a reference to avoid copyright infringement and plagiarism risks. APA provides separate formats for an entire podcast, a transcript of a podcast, and an individual episode.

APA Format for Citing the Whole Podcast

For a podcast, the main contributor is the “author,” who is the host(s), producer(s), or writer(s).

The formats for the in-text citations for the podcast are as shown below. Because a podcast does not have page or paragraph numbers and section headings, this information will not be included in the citation.

According to Watson (2022), teachers need to revitalize themselves to avoid stress.

Parenthetical

Teachers need to revitalize themselves to avoid stress (Watson, 2012).

If you are providing a direct quote from a podcast, you need to provide a timestamp after the date, as shown in the example below:

Watson stated that “teachers should share with their colleagues curriculum-planning tips, effective lessons, and units” (Watson, 2022, 7:13).

In the reference list, provide the name of the host(s) and/or the executive producer (if it is known), and include their roles in parenthesis. Provide the type of podcast, audio or video. Provide the URL of the podcast. If you did not obtain the podcast online, then nothing is needed at the end.

If the podcast is still on the air, you need to provide the year the podcast started airing and write the word “present” after the date that it started, as shown in the example below:

(2019−present)

If the podcast has ended and aired for multiple years, you will need to provide the start and end years, as shown in the example below:

(2019−2022)

If the podcast started and ended in the same year, provide only that year, as shown in the example below:

The following is the template for the podcast and an example:

Host, H. (Host) &/or Producer, A. (producer). (Date). Title of podcast . [Audio podcast]. Title of webpage. URL

Watson, A.  (Host). Truth for teachers . (2019-2022). [Audio podcast]. EmergingEdTech https://truthforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/

APA Format for the Transcript of a Podcast

If you did not listen to the podcast, but read the transcript of it, the format for citations is the same. However, for the reference list, you should put “Audio podcast transcript” in brackets, as shown in the template and example below:

APA Format for an Episode of the Podcast

If you are just referring to one episode of the podcast, the formats for the in-text citations are the same. For the reference list, the format is the same as the general format, except that you should not put the title of the episode in italics. Also, you will need to provide the episode number and the date that the podcast episode first aired, and the word “In” before the title of the podcast, as shown in the template and example below:

Host, A. (Host) &/or Producer, A. (Executive Producer). (year, month day). Title of episode (No. of episode) [Audio podcast episode]. In Title of podcast episode . Title of webpage. URL

Watson, A.  (Host). (2021, February 7). Simplify your blended learning workload. (No. 214) [Audio podcast episode]. In Truth for teachers . EmergingEdTech. https://truthforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/

If you only read the transcript of the episode, then you need to write “Audio podcast transcript” in brackets, as shown in the example below:

Watson, A.  (Host). (2021, February 7). Simplify your blended learning workload. (No. 214) [Audio podcast transcript]. In Truth for teachers . EmergingEdTech. https://truthforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/

In general, the in-text citation in APA includes only the last name(s) of the contributors (or authors) and the publication year. The contributor for an audio, video, or audiovisual work depends on the type of media. For a podcast, the last name of the host or the executive producer should be used in the author’s place. Therefore, to cite a podcast in an in-text citation,  include the last name(s) of the host(s), or executive producer(s), and the year. If you cite a podcast series, include the beginning and the ending year of the podcast with a dash between the dates (Green, 2000-2020).

Below are templates and examples of how to format an in-text citation for a podcast in APA:

Narrative: Host’s Surname/Executive Producer’s Surname (Year)

Parenthetical: (Host’s Surname/Executive Producer’s Surname, Year)

Narrative: Raymond (2018)

Parenthetical: (Raymond, 2018)

An APA reference list entry for a podcast should include the following elements: name of the podcast’s host(s), their role (in parentheses), the publication date of the episode (or span of years the podcast aired, if citing the podcast as a whole), the title of the podcast and the specific episode being cited, the episode number, a description of the podcast (in square brackets), production company, and URL (if available).

Note that the specific episode title should not be listed in quotation marks or italics. The title of the podcast, however, should be italicized in your citation.

The below template and example show how to cite a podcast episode in a reference list in APA style.

Host’s Last Name, First Initial. (Host). (Publication date). Episode title (Season #, Episode #) [Audio podcast episode]. In Podcast title . Production Company. URL

Imperioli, M., & Schirripa, S. (Hosts). (2021, December 20). Made in America (No. 91) [Audio podcast episode]. In Talking Sopranos . Podjams. https://talkingsopranos.simplecast.com/episodes/episode-91-made-in-america-rkatzv_y
