History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly.  Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947.  After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

Moreover, the first session of the India Parliament was also conducted on this day. In addition to that, 26 th January also witnessed the swearing-in of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Thus, this day is very important as it marks the end of the British rule and birth of India as a Republic State.

Long Essay For Republic Day

Republic day essay sample 1.

India proudly and fervently commemorates Republic Day on January 26 of each year. It is the anniversary of our constitution's adoption. Almost three years after gaining our independence, on January 26, 1950, India got established as a sovereign, secular, socialist, and democratic republic.

We proclaimed our independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, but our country did not yet have a written constitution. India also lacked the experts and political clout required to ensure the smooth running of state affairs. The 1935 Government of India Act, which had a stronger propensity toward colonial rule, had essentially been modified to govern up until that point. It was therefore essential to draught a thorough constitution that would encapsulate everything India stands for.

The first session of the Indian Parliament also got underway on this day. The first president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, also took the oath of office on January 26. This day is significant because it marks the end of British rule and the beginning of India as a Republic State.

On January 26 of each year, Indians have a huge celebratory Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. India celebrates the holiday by showcasing the country's military prowess and cultural diversity. It demonstrates the diversity of our country in the real world.

Republic Day Essay Sample 2

India finally achieved independence from British Rule on August 15, 1947, after many years of struggle by our valiant freedom fighters. On January 26, 1950, the Indian government proclaimed India to be the Democratic Republic, about two and a half years after adopting its own Constitution. The declaration of India as the Sovereign Democratic Republic prompted its citizens to observe Republic Day on January 26 every year as a way of remembering this momentous occasion.

Republic Day marks the remembrance of the day when the constitution of India came into force. The importance of this day could not be ignored as this was the day when India became a republic and where the government is for the people, of the people, and by the people. Celebrating Republic Day every year is a great honor for the people living in India as well as abroad. It is a day of great importance and is celebrated by the people with great joy and enthusiasm by organizing and participating in various events. People wait for this day eagerly to be part of its great celebration.

All over India, there is a significant celebration planned for the state capitals and the national capital, New Delhi. The National Anthem is sung before the President of India hoists the National Flag at Rajpath in New Delhi to begin the celebration. Following this, there will be an Indian Armed Forces parade, state-by-state "Jhankis," a march-past, the presentation of awards, etc.

On this day, the air is filled with the scent of patriotism and we can hear the sound of patriotic songs and the national flag flying high everywhere. Students of schools and colleges are very keen to celebrate this event and start the preparation around a month before. Almost every Indian citizen gets ready early in the morning to watch the celebration and parade at Rajpath, New Delhi on their television. A national flag flying high on every house is very common on this day to celebrate this national festival with a sense of nationalism and togetherness.

However, Republic Day is not the only day when we should show our patriotism towards our nation instead it should be showcased in our daily routine. We should strictly follow our fundamental duties and respect the constitution of our country then only we can help our country to become a developed nation where everyone lives in prosperity, peace, and harmony and that will be the real tribute to our freedom fighters.

To rectify this situation, the Constituent Assembly of India was established in 1947, led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, with the purpose of drafting a constitution for the newly independent nation. This historic moment marked the birth of the Republic of India, solidifying its status as a sovereign democratic republic.

The Adoption of the Indian Constitution

On January 26, 1950, India’s Constitution became the law of the land, and this was when the Republic of India officially started. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who was in charge of creating the Constitution, played a very important role in shaping it. This Constitution forms the basis for a fair and equal society in India and includes principles like justice, freedom, equality, and unity.

Essay on Republic Day of India

Republic Day Essay: Republic Day is a national holiday celebrated in India on January 26. It is the day when the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, superseding the previously existing Government of India Act(1935) and turning the country into an independent republic. It marks the transition of India from a British empire to an Independent republic.

Republic Day of India 2023

The national festival is observed throughout every school, college, and private and non-private organization. There are a number of competitions held in schools, including ones for Dancing, Singing, Essay, and Speaking on Republic Day.

‘Jan-Bhagidari-People Participation’ is the theme of the year’s celebration, which will be attended by the Egpyt President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as Chief Guest India’s 74th Republic Day.

Purna Swaraj

January 26 holds great significance in the history of India’s Independence. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, issued the Declaration of Independence, which was also known as Purna Swaraj. Furthermore, it was also decided that the 26th of January will be observed as Purna Swaraj Day all across India. The complete Independence Day was recognized and commemorated on January 26th, 1930 for the first time. It continued to be observed until 1947 when India finally became an independent country.

The Constitution of India

Even after India won its independence, the struggle continued. The country did not have any self-made constitution to rely on. However, a committee was built on August 29, 1947, to draft a permanent constitution for independent India.

Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the Father of the Nation , was made chairman of the committee. On November 4, 1947 , the committee drafted the Constitution and submitted it to the Constituent Assembly, which was then under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

The members of the Assembly reviewed the draft of the constitution for over nearly two years and on January 24, 1950, 308 members of the Assembly signed two handwritten versions – in Hindi and English – of the Constitution.

Just like India’s Independence Day, Republic Day is one of India’s greatest successes and achievements. It is one of the reasons why the people of India can practice their democratic rights and responsibilities. One must remember the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters to build a nation that we can call home.
